Leith St Andrew's Church of Scotland, Edinburgh ANNUAL REPORT AND ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31ST DECEMBER 2016 Congregation No: Scottish Charity No: SC
Leith St Andrew s Church of Scotland Trustees Report Year ended 31 st December 2016 The Trustees present the Annual Report and Accounts for Leith St Andrew s Church of Scotland, Edinburgh for the year ended 31 st December The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in the accounts and comply with the General Assembly Regulations for Congregational Finance and the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005, the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations (as amended) 2006 and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standards applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland published on 16 July Objectives and Activities The Church of Scotland is Trinitarian in doctrine, Reformed in tradition and Presbyterian in polity. It exists to glorify God and to work for the advancement of Christ s Kingdom throughout the world. As a national Church, it acknowledges a distinctive call and duty to bring the ordinances of religion to the people in every parish of Scotland through a territorial ministry. It co-operates with other Churches in various ecumenical bodies in Scotland and beyond. We are a congregation of 197 people. Our parish covers an area of 2-3 square miles with a total population of approximately 7,500. It is a mainly residential area with a few shops and businesses with a total of 4 care establishments, 3 primary and 1 secondary schools. In addition to Sunday worship we have many activities taking place in our premises which sees some 400 adults and children from our local community going through our doors each week. Mission and Purpose As a worshipping community we seek to learn, deepen faith, spirituality, embrace new friendships, serve and promote social justice by our deeds and actions. We desire that the church will always be a place of welcome. Our purpose is to love God and love our neighbours. Ministry Rev. Rob Mackenzie has been the minister of Leith St Andrew s since February As Minister, he seeks to develop the mission, vision and goals of the church along with the elders/trustees of the Kirk Session and Task Groups. The personal and professional development and discipleship of elders and members of congregation is important and always on-going. He also works collaboratively with the other Leith Churches Forum ministers, encouraging closer links between the Congregations and looking at ways to work more closely together. Pastoral duties include visiting those in hospital, sheltered housing and care homes, the conducting of funerals and the provision of pastoral care to the bereaved. In this, the minister is assisted by elders and a pastoral care team. The 5 Building Blocks of our Mission are about outreach, both within and out with the worshipping community: 1.Worship 2. Service 3. Fellowship 4. Evangelism 5. Discipleship Our values reflect the values of Jesus from Journey to Growth:- Focusing vision (purpose values) Sharing faith values (what, where, how) Building local partnerships (engagement) Nourishing Daily Living (discipleship) - 2 -
1. Worship Worship takes place on Sunday mornings, at Oasis of Peace (midweek) and Messy Church (monthly on Thursday late afternoons for families). Additional Services are held during Advent, Christmas and Holy Week. Joint services are held with other congregations as part of the One Church for Leith; these include Leith Festival Worship, an Epiphany Communion, and the annual Seafarers Service. The quality of worship presentation by is of a high standard, flexible and participatory: a mix of traditional and contemporary. The Oasis of Peace, a more contemplative form of worship, has a small but regular group of attendees, including some from outwith our congregation. Members are always encouraged to become more involved in worship. Worship is enhanced by large screens displaying hymns, readings, responses and media clips. Members of the Congregation led and participated in All Age worship and other special services on occasion. Volunteers are on hand to provide crèche facilities if required enabling young families to come to worship. Musicians from the congregation take part in worship on an occasional basis alongside the church s musical director. 2. Service The Church halls are well used by: Organisations: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and a new Guides Senior Section, Young at Heart Community Groups: Playgroup, Probus Men s Club, Mary Phelan Dance School, Line Dance Club, Trefoil Guild, Capital Concert Band, The Claremont Players music group and three addiction support groups. The church was used on 2 occasions by Neu Reekie for Music & Poetry events. The congregation sent 148 gift filled shoe boxes to Eastern Europe as part of Operation Christmas Child. This year the Rainbows also donated boxes. Working with Leith Churches Together we supported their Woolly Hats for Seamen projects. The congregation continues to support the homeless through involvement with the Care Van and this year our building was used on two evenings for the Bethany Care Shelter overnight. We hold an annual Coffee & Carols event to financially support our work with Bethany. A Food Bank (under the auspices of Trussell Trust) is operated by the 4 Church of Scotland Congregations in Leith and also St Margaret s Church in Restalrig Village. The Food Bank is open every day with our premises used twice weekly, staffed by volunteers from our congregation and others. The congregation supports people in the community at crisis times and in life transition times. 3. Fellowship As a congregation we continue to be aware of the needs of people, both within and beyond the congregation. There is a good support system in place, with people quick to give support of a practical nature and through prayer. There is always a greeter on duty at the door to welcome people on a Sunday, particularly looking out for visitors. Social events are held throughout the year. A fellowship meal is provided on Maundy Thursday prior to the Maundy service. The congregation seeks to be accepting of people for who they are and are continually looking to improve communication with newcomers, involving people in their areas of interest and making best use of people s strength s and skills
4. Evangelism The church website, s, leaflets, magazines, regularly updated notice boards, and the church bells all serve to tell the community something about church life in Leith St Andrew s. Our website was updated this year giving it a fresh new look and our Facebook page has a small but growing following. Messy Church for young families brings adults and children to church on the last Thursday of every month. Families see Leith St Andrew s as their church. This is mission on the doorstep, welcoming families who are new to the neighbourhood and church. We are looking at employing a Youth Worker, in association with the YWCA and North Leith Church, who would work in Leith Academy as well as in Churches. Involvement in community events has been an important part of evangelism, such as the Leith Festival with other local churches. 5. Discipleship During Lent a discussion course was held, led by the minister. This was open to all Churches in Leith. The course encouraged attendees to look at their faith using clips from the film Chocolat. Attendees were encouraged to examine their beliefs and to share their faith. At Easter, we joined with the other Leith Churches in join worship during Holy Week with a different congregation taking its turn at holding a service on one evening during the week. At Leith St Andrew s we led the service on Monday of Holy Week and members of the congregation helped lead the Stations of the Cross service at St Mary s on Good Friday. Success Factors to achieving growth Relevance of preaching and worship styles and patterns Quality of worship Warmth of welcome and friendliness of the people Inclusive in our diversity Presence of all ages Possibility to belong to a family Range of children s programmes Sincere pastoral care We wish our worship, stewardship and church building to be relevant for 21 st Century. Achievements and Performance In terms of our overall performance the Minister, elders and members of the Congregation have continued to work well, sharing our vision, supporting and nurturing each other. In terms of our Kirk Session there is a sense of inclusiveness with everyone being involved in the on-going witness and mission. Chaplaincy: we work alongside three primary schools, and have strong relationships with them one with assemblies and classwork and the other two with assemblies. They also use the church building for special assemblies Stewardship campaign: this small group was formed to look at how to encourage our members to develop their sense of stewardship of the Church. This is a three-year cycle on Time, Talents and Money. This year s focus was on talents. Throughout the year, all members were encouraged to think about how they could use their talents to serve the Church. Members filled in cards saying what they felt their talents were and these were collated and possible new volunteers identified. Some of our members shared their musical talents at a joint Burns Supper in January held at South Leith. A St Andrew s Day celebration was held in November where we enjoyed lunch after Church followed by an afternoon of Scottish entertainment, again provided by some of our talented members
Pastoral Care: Flowers from the Sunday worship service are distributed weekly. There is a Young at Heart Club for those 60 years and over within the church and wider community. A member of the Pastoral Care Team is available once each month for people to pass on any information. Our new groupings arrangements seem to be working well enabling us to focus on those members who are most in need of visiting and support. At Christmas we distributed shortbread and Christmas cards to those who are elderly, infirm or ill. Property: Property work this year has mainly been on maintenance and ongoing repairs to ensure that the church, halls and manse are kept in a good condition. The aisles of the church were re-decorated and are a great improvement on what they were. The gates and new railings outside the church (which were erected last year) have been painted. The hot water heater which supplies hot water to the WC sinks failed and had to be replaced. After a number of breakdowns, the boiler in the manse has also been replaced. The new systems are much more efficient than the old ones and should see a reduction in running costs. The gutters are now regularly cleared out to prevent leaks and minor repairs have been carried out to the hall roofs to keep the building water tight. Within the church, a new computer was purchased for use in the service and repairs to the sound system have been carried out.. Our rented property at Easter Warriston has a good tenant who is taking care of the property. This year the bedroom carpet was replaced, a new shower was installed (after many small repairs which proved unsuccessful), and the hall laminated flooring was replaced. Mission & Outreach: Our Young at Heart Club for senior citizens within the church and local community meets throughout the year enjoying a variety of speakers. Our congregation generously supports the work of organisations such as Christian Aid. This year we held a lunch and film afternoon which was very much enjoyed and helped add to our total of 500 for the work of Christian Aid. The congregation continues to support UNICEF through the Jars of Grace appeal this year raising 213. Other donations throughout the year were sent to The Stroke Assoc, Fresh Start, MS Society & Bethany Safe Families. Members of the congregation regularly donate food for the Foodbank with a special collection at Harvest time. They also help with special corporate collection days at Tesco. Fundraising: This year for the Leith Gala Day stall we asked members of the congregation to make up Jars of Joy and also invited the youth organisations to take part. This was well supported and we had lots of lovely jars to sell as well as a tombola, raising 525 for Church funds. A concert performed by The Capital Concert Band in October, with proceeds going to the Church was well attended. Coffee mornings run by our Young at Heart group, The Claremont Players music group and the Capital Concert Band also added to our funds. We held our usual Christmas coffee morning in December which was enjoyed by those who attended. Home collection of loose change in Honey Pots is now a regular source of fundraising as are donations for teas on Sunday mornings. One Church for Leith this group comprising of members of all the Leith Church of Scotland congregations is now actively looking at ways for the Churches to move forward together in Leith. Kirk Sessions have agreed to an in-depth survey of all the properties to look at how our buildings can best be used in future
Financial Review Income and Expenditure created a Deficit of 6414 at the year end. This was less than predicted due to more income from use of our premises and 2 years tax being received from the Gift Aid from Small Donations Scheme (GASD) Sadly, we have lost some members during the year who gave significantly to the church and this will be reflected in the coming year. We have 43 people who have been issued with FWO envelopes and 44 people giving regularly by Standing Order. 19 elderly and housebound people are on the Box Scheme, where they put their offering into a box and this is collected by the Elder. We claimed Gift Aid for 69 people. Income from Hall Rental has been boosted by the Capital Concert Band paying for storing their instruments and by holding concerts in the church. Fabric expenditure was 10, 236, with the main jobs being the painting of the church aisles, the new railings and the existing gate at church entrance, the water heater for the toilets, and a new gas boiler for the Manse. Our rented house in Easter Warriston had some larger replacement work done this year, but still netted We received 2 legacies during the year from the Late Sigrid Lithgow and Christine McIntosh We are grateful to the Auditor, Neil J Morrison CA for re-donating his charge for audit back into church funds. A debt of 4232 which was due to be paid to the Boys Brigade has been paid into church funds as the BB Company has been disbanded. The Kirk Session agreed that this money should be set aside within a new fund to pay the fees to allow disadvantaged children to attend the Leith St Andrew s Playgroup. Risk Management The Trustees have considered issues associated to the risks to the charity. A falling membership means falling income and fewer people to share the tasks associated with the daily running of the church. We are actively looking at sharing worship and resources with the other 3 Church of Scotland Congregations in Leith through the One Church For Leith group. We consider that we have adequate Reserves to cover Fabric expenditure. Operational costs run at a small deficit. Reserves Policy The Trustees have considered the reserves required and have taken into account their current and future liabilities. It is the Trustees policy to hold reserves of approx. 3 months expenditure. At year end unrestricted reserves of 121,593 within the General Fund covers expenditure for 14 months. The Balance from the sale of St Thomas Junction Road held within the CofS Trustees, and the Manse at Easter Warriston can be used to fund any unforeseen Fabric expenditure

Leith St Andrew's Church of Scotland, Edinburgh SC Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Leith St Andrew's Church of Scotland, Edinburgh I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31st December Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the terms of the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended) The charity s trustees consider that the audit requirement of Regulation 10(1) (a) to (c) of the Accounts Regulations does not apply. It is my responsibility to examine the accounts as required under section 44(1) (c) of the Act and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. Basis of independent examiner s statement My examination is carried out in accordance with Regulation 11 of the Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 (as amended). An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeks explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the view given by the accounts. Independent examiner s statement In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention 1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 44 (1)(a) of the 2005 Act and Regulation 4 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations (as amended) and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with Regulation 8 of the 2006 Accounts Regulations(as amended) have not been met, or 2. To which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached. Neil Morrison, C.A.
