1 January 2017 Strength for the Day Pastor Jamie Happy New Year. As we say goodbye to 2016 and step into 2017, let s remember with joy that our God said Behold, I am making all things new. The God of love has come in the Christ child to make all things new --- years, lives, relationships, careers, outlooks, habits, ministries, even whole congregations. When the New Year came to the congregation of Israel, it was marked with festive celebration. On New Year s Day, the first rays of the sun, rising over the Mount of Olives, shone in a straight line through the outer eastern gate of the Temple, then on across the Temple Court and over the great altar inside, between the two pillars on either side and on down the long corridor into the Holy of Holies, the sacred recess at the western end. These first rays of New Year s Day were called the radiance of God and symbolized God s entrance into the sanctuary, renewing God s covenant with the people. Just at this moment, the shofar or ram s horn would be sounded, and the procession would begin, saying for the people that God would continue to be their God, and that they were still God s people. The crops may have failed this year, enemies may have threatened or attacked, but it is still God who led the people out of Egypt, God who still sits upon the holy throne reigning over the nations, God who shall be exalted forever and ever. And on this day we see it, because now the light is just right and the past, the present and the future, at least for today, are all ordered in a perfect line. continued page 3 Resuming BELIEVE Our BELIEVE sermon series restarted Jan. 1, with a lesson focused on what we believe. 2 Trinity Supper Club We ll be serving Methodist Maid-Rites, hot dogs, chips, peaches, and ice cream to the Supper Club at Trinity UMC on Monday, Jan. 9. We have plenty of food supplies for this meal, plus our amazing chefs (Marj and Marilyn) but can always use another pair of serving hands. If you re available to help share God s Love with those needing a warm meal, you can either meet at WUMC at 3:45 to carpool or get yourself to Trinity UMC by 4:40. The church is located at th Street, just north of downtown Des Moines by 4:30. We ll to back in Waukee by 6:30 or so. If you d like to make a monetary contribution to support this fantastic opportunity to share God s love, or have related questions, please contact Lauren Kratz. Serving Our Church Family If you d like to serve our church family as a greeter, usher, communion server, or nursery attendant please contact LuCinda Beltman. Singing School If you love old-fashioned hymns, you re invited to gather in our sanctuary for an hour of singing. Come join others in our church family at 4:00 on Sunday, Jan. 29. We ll enjoy an hour singing the beloved songs of our spiritual heritage. Jennifer Senne will lead the hour and Kara Boothroyd will be at the piano. All ages and musical abilities are invited. Winter Weather Policy Iowa weather doesn t always accommodate our plans. If the Waukee Schools are cancelled or dismissed early due to inclement weather, all WUMC functions planned for that evening will be cancelled. Cancellations will be posted on the church website, and on KCCI and WHO TV. 2

3 Lunch Bunch Start the year off right, dining with our Third Thursday Lunch Bunch, Jan. 19, at the Pizza Ranch. We ll meet in one of the party rooms at 11:30 for a table blessing, food, and conversation. You re welcome to be part of the bunch. Noah s AARP Details about a Noah s AARP game night will be available at the Connection Counter and in the Tuesday Waukee Wires. from page 1 The Biblical faith suggests that God is the God of the past, the present, and most especially, the future. Time and again in scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, we are reminded that God is continually doing new things. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, and later, Behold, I make all things new. We should not be surprised to see that the God of creation and re-creation will be at work in 2017, at the individual level of our own life, and at the congregational level of our church s life. The praise team will be teaching us the joy of the psalms which proclaim sing a new song to the Lord. The Finance team will create new ways and means of communicating the exciting news of our land and building progress, as well as our stewardship of the resources God has entrusted to us. New small group Bibles studies will be sharing the good news of God s great love for us and teaching us new ways that we can be stronger disciples of Jesus Christ. Our prayer team will be creating new ways for everyone to experience the healing power of prayer, as well as participate more fully in prayer during our Sunday Celebrations. And our leadership teams will be discussing new ways that we can best leverage our resources to minister to the most people in Waukee and beyond, helping them to become disciples of Jesus Christ. May God bless you as together we enter this New Year. Remember, we serve a mighty God. A God who has created us and called us into a loving and trusting relationship with himself. A God who encourages us, saying For surely I know the plans I have for you plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Friends, this is the day that the Lord has made. 4 F.I.R.E. Youth Ministries For those of you who don t know, I spent several years coaching. One of the big things I always stressed was for my players to finish strong. I believe that s exactly what our youth did this Christmas. What do I mean? I m referring to our Christmas Eve and Christmas morning services. What a great weekend of worship as we celebrated the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Special thanks to our youth and their families for helping with our Christmas morning service. These folks helped each of us learn more about the meaning behind the 12 Days of Christmas. Green Our youth also stepped up and played an active role in the 2016 Giving Tree. Many of them took the responsibility of selecting, purchasing, and placing a gift for someone a little less fortunate under our Giving Tree. What a life lesson moment. This is the first of many activities planned to positively impact our Room community. Hats off to our youth One goal I have is to ensure our time together is both meaningful and active. The plans we re Update making may require help from many of you. Don t be surprised when we knock on your door, asking for help. More details about our plans for 2017 will be available soon. Naturally, we re already developing plans for If you ever have questions about what our F.I.R.E. youth are up to, or if you d like to help in some way, please let me know. The doors to our Green Room are always open, and we d love to have you stop-by for a visit. Thanks for your ongoing support, Pastor Jeff Lavender Springs Spa is a relaxing spa-themed retreat the women of our church are doing together. It includes worship, Bible study, and time for laughter, as well as time for quiet reflection. We ll be focusing on the book of Psalms and will be encouraged by God s faithfulness and love. Set aside the date of Sat., March 4 on your calendars and watch for more information. Please join us on Jan. 15 (after second service) for Coffee with the Pastor. This is a casual opportunity for recent guests and regular attendees to spend some time with Pastor Jamie, learning about membership at WUMC, asking questions about our /or ministries, and getting to know one another better. Food Pantry Needs This month, our Waukee Area Christian Food Pantry needs extra pancake mix & syrup, pizza mix & sauce, 100% fruit juice, diapers (size 3 & up), and laundry soap. Souper Bowl Sunday Join our church family on Sunday, Feb. 5 for a potluck of soup, snacks, and Super Bowl LI on the big screen in the sanctuary. Festivities will include commercial BINGO, friendly competition, and our WUMC Golden Spoon Award. 4

He usually carries a few copies with him, so you can buy a copy from the author himself. A TV interview about Chuck s book aired a few weeks ago. This is a different kind of book for our group because it s a love story. Beyond that though, it s a book that will make you think about what stand you might take if faced by a given situation. It s described as being funny, hopeful, and heartbreaking with a theme that it s never too late to truly start living. We ll meet on the third Monday in February, Feb. 20, at 7:00, and you re invited to be part of the discussion at Ann and Greg Ruble s home. Diapers on a Mission What: Turn T-shirts into diapers for orphanages When: Saturday, Jan. 21, 10:00 a.m. 3 Where:St. Boniface Parish Hall Who: You, even if you can t sew a stitch The Waukee Area Churches are uniting to make diapers for Orphanages. You don t need to know how to sew to help-out. Many of the steps (cutting, turning, pinning) don t require sewing. All sewing is very basic. Bring your sewing machine, scissors, old thread (any color, this is a great way to get rid of old, neverto-be-used-again thread), rotary cutter, mat if you have one, and an extension cord for your machine. Also, please bring a dish to share for lunch as well. Help others in the Waukee community turn T- shirts into diapers to send on a mission. So far this Mission has taken over 4,000 diapers to Haiti, Uganda, Nigeria, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
