3 Call to Worship: Confirmation Class We are gathered here on the first Sunday in Lent. It is a season of mystery. It marks the time of Jesus journey in the wilderness. Can we go with him on this journey? Yes! Jesus invites us on this journey to discover more about ourselves, to discover more about His way, and to discover the kingdom of Heaven. Come, let us go with Jesus on this journey. Opening Prayer and Lord s Prayer: Confirmation Class Let us Pray: Dear God, please receive us into your Grace. Allow our hearts to open to you in a new way, as we journey toward your Hope for the world. Open our eyes to the blessings that are in our lives, and the hurts that are in the world. Open our ears to the songs of justice, and the cries for peace. Open our hands to embrace the stranger, and the child within. Allow us to hear your word of Love in our hearts, and proclamation upon our lips. Allow us to develop our faith by reaching in, and Live our faith by reaching out. (silence) Source of Love and Forgiveness, you wrap us in constant compassion, inviting us on this Lenten journey to travel toward the cross. Forgive us when we lose our focus and direct our attention elsewhere. Remind us that we do not walk alone, but that Christ is our constant companion. It is in His name that we pray. Amen. 7 Music Notes Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, is a chorale tune that has been set by many composers, but most famously by J.S. Bach. Bach used the chorale tune that was first published between 1526/1527 as the basis for his Cantata BWV177 with the same name. The setting by Sweelinck predates Bach s treatment by almost one hundred years. The original chorale (hymn) tune was set with 5 verses of text. The offertory music today uses J.S. Bach s setting of the tune found in his Orgelbϋchlein. Here is a first verse of the chorale tune and translation: Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, Ich bitt, erhör mein Klagen, Verleih mir Gnad zu dieser Frist, Laß mich doch nicht verzagen; Den rechten Glauben, Herr, ich mein, Den wollest du mir geben, Dir zu leben, Meinm Nächsten nütz zu sein, Dein Wort zu halten eben. I call to You, Lord Jesus Christ, I beg You, hear my cries, grant me mercy at this time, do not let me despair; the true faith, Lord, I mean that You would give me, to live for You, to be of use to my neighbour, to keep Your word faithfully. Confirmation Class 2019 Confirmation classes have begun and we send prayers of love and support to our new confirmands and their mentors: Sarah Richardson and Lynda Kennedy Derik Koustrup and Allyson Watson Abbie Cull and Chris Silcox Shaw Atherton and Chris Wood Erik Moeller and Jane Dockrill Harrison Silcox and Jim Silcox Alexis and Susan McKane Andrew Richardson and David McKane This group will work together and in mentorship teams until the fall of Congratulations! Already, the confirmands attended a weekend retreat with 20 other confirmation students. It was held by the Centre for Practical Theology and hosted at Dorchester United Church. 7

For Lent 4, we are going to be looking at the theme of Worry and what it means for us all.
