September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 4 Confession and Absolution (Please rise as you are able) The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. Invocation Matthew 28:19b; [18:20] LSB 151 P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Exhortation 1 John 1:8 9 LSB 151 P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. Confession of Sins Matthew 16:25; Jeremiah 15:19 P Beloved, Jesus said, Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. Let us empty ourselves of our fears and failures, confessing our sins and asking God to fill us with His peace. C Far be it, O Lord, that I should not deny myself, take up my cross, and follow You. By Your cross and resurrection give to me Your forgiveness and assurance of new life by Your grace. Sin consumes me, for I am sinful from birth. Take away my selfish desires and fill me with Your love. Help me proclaim Your love in loving service to others. Amen. Absolution P Thus says the Lord, If you return, I will restore you. Upon this your confession, I as a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 7 Salutation and Collect of the Day P Let us pray. Almighty God, Your Son willingly endured the agony and shame of the cross for our redemption. Grant us courage to take up our cross daily and follow Him wherever He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Please be seated Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 15:15 21 O LORD, you know; remember me and visit me, and take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In your forbearance take me not away; know that for your sake I bear reproach. Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts. I did not sit in the company of revelers, nor did I rejoice; I sat alone, because your hand was upon me, for you had filled me with indignation. Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you be to me like a deceitful brook, like waters that fail? Therefore thus says the
September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 8 LORD: If you return, I will restore you, and you shall stand before me. If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you shall be as my mouth. They shall turn to you, but you shall not turn to them. And I will make you to this people a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but they shall not prevail over you, for I am with you to save you and deliver you, declares the LORD. I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and redeem you from the grasp of the ruthless. R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Psalm Psalm 26:1 12 R Vindicate me, O LORD, for I have walked in my integrity, C and I have trusted in the LORD without wavering. R Prove me, O LORD, and try me; C test my heart and my mind. R For your steadfast love is before my eyes, C and I walk in your faithfulness. R I do not sit with men of falsehood, C nor do I consort with hypocrites. R I hate the assembly of evil-doers, C and I will not sit with the wicked. R I wash my hands in innocence C and go around your altar, O LORD, R proclaiming thanksgiving aloud, C and telling all your wondrous deeds. R O LORD, I love the habitation of your house C and the place where your glory dwells. R Do not sweep my soul away with sinners, C nor my life with blood-thirsty men, R in whose hands are evil devices, C and whose right hands are full of bribes. R But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity; C redeem me, and be gracious to me. R My foot stands on level ground; C in the great assembly I will bless the LORD. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen Epistle Romans 12:9 21 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of
September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 9 the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be conceited. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Solo: In the Cross Josh Hady Music: Christopher W. Hart Lyrics: Fanny J. Crosby (1869) Jesus keep me near the cross there a precious fountain Free to all, a healing stream, flows from Calvary s mountain. Refrain In the cross, in the cross, Be my glory ever. Till my raptured soul shall find Rest beyond the river. Near the cross, a trembling soul, Love and mercy found me. There the bright and Morning Star sheds its beams around me. Refrain Near the cross I ll watch and wait, Hoping, trusting ever, Till I reach that golden strand Just beyond the river. Refrain (Please rise as you are able)
September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 10 Verse of the Day Matt. 16:25 P Alleluia. Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Alleluia. Common Alleluia LSB 156 Holy Gospel Matthew 16:21 28 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixteenth chapter. From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you. But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man. Then Jesus told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give in return for his life? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom. P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 11 Apostles' Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Please be seated

September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 15 Service of the Sacrament Preface 2 Timothy 4:22; [Colossians 3:1]; [Psalm 136] LSB 160 Proper Preface P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: Sanctus Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9 LSB 161
September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 16 Prayer of Thanksgiving LSB 161 P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on those whom You created and sent Your only-begotten Son into our flesh to bear our sin and be our Savior. With repentant joy we receive the salvation accomplished for us by the all-availing sacrifice of His body and His blood on the cross. C Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Words of Our Lord Matthew 26:26 28; Mark 14:22 24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23 25 LSB 162 P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.
September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 17 Proclamation of Christ 1 Corinthians 11:26; Revelation 22:20 LSB 162 P C As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. P O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and give us Your peace: Pax Domini John 20:19 LSB 163 Agnus Dei John 1:29 LSB 163 Please be seated

September 3 rd,2017 Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost pg. 23 What Luther Says The Sort of Cross Christians Should Bear It may be that people here and there do possess little pieces of the holy cross. But now the cross is in so many places that an entire house could be built of the material. Therefore a greater misuse exists in our time than in the time of Helena, when it was found and raised up. Now it is again buried spiritually. It would be better if it had never been found; and it would be no sin if it had remained buried under the ground. Christ lays a different cross upon us to bear or holds it up to us when He says: If any man will come after Me, let him... take up his cross and follow Me (Matt. 16:24). Here Christ says that I am to bear my cross. If those who carried the cross were Christians, why, then would be few Christians; for it is carried only by bishops and prelates in the silver monstrance. Christ carries His cross, and you must bear yours; otherwise an idolatrous devotion comes of this carrying and kissing. 56 Days till Reformation Sunday
