1 Saint Jude Catholic School March 15, 2016 Lenten reflection: It s hard to believe that there are only 2 weeks till Easter. The most important Day of the Liturgical Calendar. This Sunday we remember Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem; the day we remember as Palm Sunday. At Mass we ll read the Passion of our Lord. Then we ll take palms home to adorn religious figures and remember this day throughout the year. Ironically, many of those waving palms and throwing them at the feet of Christ s donkey, praising Hosanna in the Highest, would later be the one s shouting, Crucify Him, the following Friday. He wasn t the kind of savior many were looking for. He didn t lead a rebellion against the Romans. He didn t fix their problems the way they wanted. How many times do we turn to God with our problems and ask him for assistance and then become upset or discouraged because God didn t fix it the way we wanted? Maybe God has a different plan or lesson he wants us to learn from our struggles. I think the best lesson to get out of Easter is that life isn t always fair, but we can take comfort in knowing that God is better than fair. Consider this verse from Romans 5:7-8, Indeed only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. If you think about it, God gave us a gift we really don t deserve salvation. I ll take that over fair any day. Happy Easter! ISTEP News!!!! ISTEP Part I has been completed and 3 rd grade students are now taking IREAD. Oh, so much testing! There is much debate about the purpose and importance of standardized tests these days. Unfortunately, that is the world we currently live in and these are the procedures we must follow. Be that as it may, there is still a lot of stress and some anxiety that goes into testing. I want to commend our test coordinator, Mr. Wilkins, and all of the 3-8 th grade teachers for doing a wonderful job of preparing the students and helping the kids to keep things in perspective. ISTEP Part II will begin April 18 th. Lost but not Found We currently have a large bin of coats, shirts, pants, lunch boxes etc. that have accumulated over the past few months. If you think you may be missing something please ask your son or daughter to check the lost and found this week. Whatever is left on Friday March 18 will be donated to the St. Vincent DePaul society thrift store. St. Jude Scool Mission Statement St. Jude Catholic School community, a vital part of the St. Jude Catholic parish, is dedicated to educating each child spiritually, intellectually, emotionally culturally, and physically. Catholic Corner How does one become a member of the Catholic Church? The quick answer is: Be baptized in the Catholic Church. Active Catholic parents attend two Baptism classes and may have their infants or young children baptized. Children age 7 and older attend special classes to learn about the Catholic beliefs, sacraments, prayer, the life of Christ and the practices of the Catholic faith. This may take two years of preparation. Adults attend RCIA classes and celebrate several special rites along the way. Baptism for adults and older children is usually at the Easter Vigil when they would also be confirmed and receive their First Holy Communion.

2 CONGRATULATION TO OUR SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS! Congratulations to the following students who represented St. Jude School this past Saturday at the 61st Northeast Indiana Regional Science and Engineering Fair at IPFW: Aislyn Hogan, 4th grade Bella Rouyes, 4th grade Sam Weir, 6th grade Josie Fett, 7th grade Hope Nitza, 7th grade Saloni Dixon, 8th grade In addition, Josie Fett and Hope Nitza received two awards: The Huntington University Outstanding Achievement in Health Sciences Award with a $50 prize and the Excellence in Behavioral and Social Sciences Award from IPFW. Congratulations to all of these students for a job well done! Congratulations to the St. Jude Math Club who competed at the 2016 MathCounts Chapter Competition held at IPFW on Saturday, February 13. St. Jude s was the only catholic school in our diocese to compete. The following mathletes earned a position on the school team: Tobe E. Andy F. David L. Geoffrey M. Additional St. Jude competitors were Dahlia C., Eric C., Shea O., and seventh grader Adam Y.. Congratulations to Shea O. who earned the top individual score for the school and to Adam Y. who earned the top score among alternates. IREAD TESTING FOR 3 RD GRADE MARCH Grade 3 will be required to complete I-READ 3 during the week of March 14 - March 18. Reminder: Come to school on time, eat a good breakfast, get plenty of sleep, and bring two #2 pencils. Please do not schedule dentist/doctor appointments or other away from school activities during this testing time because this makes it hard to test or have students make it up. Also, please no last minute arrangements as we will not be calling into the classrooms during IREAD. SPRING BREAK Monday, April 4 th thru Friday, April 8 rd. Classes resume on Monday, April 11th. LAST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR THIS YEAR So far, as long as there are no more future school cancellations, our last day for school will be Wednesday, May 25th SPIRIT WEAR Parents, The final SpiritWear order for this school year will be placed on Wednesday, March 16. Now is the time to order a sweatshirt or hoodie for warmer weather or a larger size t- shirt if your gym shirts or spirit shirts are too small. All orders must be in the school office by the end of the day on March 16. The new single page order form for all SpiritWear, including the junior high fleece, is available on the school website under the parent tab. Questions? 3 EASTER PARTY AT ST. MARY S SOUP KITCHEN St. Mary s Soup kitchen is throwing a Big Easter Party to bring some Easter Joy to kids of the neighborhood they serve and (anyone else who would like to join). We hope you can help in this fun cause. Please see the attached flyer in this newsletter and consider bringing in a bag of Easter Candy to share with our friends at St. Mary s Church and Soup Kitchen. A box will be placed in the main office area for your donations. You can drop them off any time you are able. God Bless and Happy Easter!! SCHOOL CALENDAR INFORMATIOM As we inch closer to spring, we also look ahead to our next school year. St. Jude Catholic School has established a list of important dates including dates for the beginning and end of the school year as well as vacation breaks. These dates have been based on other area schools to help families better align their own calendars. Please note the following regarding snow/weather make-ups days: If we have missed four days due to snow/weather before President s Day on Monday, February 20 th, 2017 we will use that as a make-up day. 9 St. Jude Catholic School SCRIP EXPRE$$ Volume 17 Issue 2 March 15, 2016 We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have supported and helped promote the St. Jude SCRIP-For-Tuition Program. The SCRIP year ended February 28, Tuition credit earned on SCRIP purchases made up to this date will be applied to your May 2016 tuition payment (if applicable) with any excess credit applied to the tuition balance for the school year. Please remember that a minimum of $20.00 must have been earned in order to process a tuition credit. If your family s total tuition credit was less than $20.00, the money was transferred to the St. Jude Tuition Assistance Fund, which greatly thanks you. Final Tuition Earning Statements for the SCRIP year were distributed on Tuesday, March 8 th via Kidmail to St. Jude families, and BDHS/BLHS families were able to start picking up their statements on Wednesday, March 9 th at walk in sales. If you have any questions concerning your statement, please contact a SCRIP Coordinator as soon as possible since your statement has already been sent to your respective school s Business office and we will be archiving all paperwork over spring break. SPRING BREAK and SCRIP If you are traveling out of town over Easter or Spring break, now is the time to order your gas cards, restaurant, grocery, motel, and/or airline SCRIP. Check out the National Retailers List at ShopwithSCRIP.com. You can Special order/prepay SCRIP with us for your traveling needs; be smart and plan ahead!!! Please note: there will be NO SCRIP SALES OVER SPRING BREAK. Parents of departing 8 th graders---if your child will not be attending BDHS or BLHS, please think about continuing to purchase SCRIP; you can help fellow St. Jude Families by routing your SCRIP earnings to the St. Jude Tuition Assistance Fund or to a family of your choice. Also, if you receive a Choice Scholarship (voucher) & have a student entering or currently attending Dwenger or Luers, you can purchase SCRIP to help reduce your payment!!! Fill those Easter baskets with gift cards!! Get some DeBrand s Fine Chocolate ($10 at 8%) or Dairy Queen ($5 at 10%) SCRIP. Do you need any new patio furniture, lawn equipment, flower pots, etc? Start stocking up on Lowe s 2%) or Menard s 1%) SCRIP. SCRIP-For-Tuition Hours Please Note: St. Jude School Kidmail is on Tuesdays, when school is in session. Wednesday 5:30-6:30pm in the Parish Center; Thursday 7:30-9:30am in the Parish Center. If there is no school due to weather, there are NO SCRIP sales. Weekend Schedule--- *after Saturday evening Mass 3/19 & 4/9 *after Sunday 7, 9, and 11am Mass 3/20 & 4/10 SCRIP Reminders Any checks returned for insufficient funds are your responsibility. A $20.00 fee will be charged for each check returned. You will not be able to purchase SCRIP until the matter has been resolved. Please remember too that we are unable to accept postdated checks or hold checks for later deposits. You may drop off your form with payment before Mass; simply give it to a SCRIP salesperson when the orange SCRIP sign is posted or put it in the Parish Office mail slot (located on the Pemberton Drive door). Your order will be available for express pick-up after Mass.
