HOLY WEEK is the most significant week of the year for Christian worship. During this week the church remembers the events of Christ s passion and death. We are reminded of all which took place leading up to Jesus death and we trace Jesus life as we journey with him in Jerusalem. Please join us on: Palm Sunday (4/9) At 8:45 am we will celebrate Palm Sunday and the Passion of Christ with a special Palm/Passion Service of Scriptures and Music. We will walk with Jesus from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem all the way to the cross. At 10:45 am we will glorify God with the first half of our Choir Cantata that will celebrate Palm Sunday and the ministries of Jesus. Maundy Thursday (4/13) - 7 pm At 7 pm we will gather for a Service of Holy Communion as we remember the Last Supper and Jesus words: Do this in remembrance of me. Good Friday (4/14) At 12:15 pm we will gather for our Community Good Friday Service at Bethel Christian Church at 12:15 pm with Rev. Bob Roberson preaching. At 7 pm we will have a Good Friday Service at JUMC. Easter Sunday (4/16) At 6:45 am we will gather for our Sunrise Service in the parking lot. At 8:45 am our early service will celebrate the Resurrection. At 9:45 am we will meet for Sunday school. At 10:45 am we will rejoice in our risen Lord with the second half of our Choir Cantata celebrating Christ s Resurrection and our gift of salvation. From The Voice John 13:1 Before the Passover festival began, Jesus was keenly aware that his hour had come to depart from this world and to return to the Father. From beginning to end, Jesus days were marked by His love for His people.
2 Easter Cantata Save the Date Apr 8 Sisters of Faith Bazaar, Bake Sale & Auction For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish, but may have eternal life. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends. Apr 9 Choir Cantata (first half) during second service Apr 13 Maundy Thursday service at 7 pm Apr 14 Good Friday service at 7 pm Apr 16 Sunrise Service at 6:45 am Choir Cantata (second half) during second service Apr 23 Youth Senior Day during first service; Children s Sunday at second service Apr 30 Fifth Sunday Supper more information to come This is the resounding theme throughout John W. Peterson's cantata "No Greater Love". The choir will present this cantata in two parts, beginning on Palm Sunday and finishing on Easter Sunday. It is our prayer that the choral and scriptural journey of "No Greater Love," combined with the pastor's sermons, will provide special meaning for our worship on April 9 and April 16 during the 10:45am service. Library News The following books have been placed in the library: Life on the Edge by Dr. James Dobson A Young Adult s Guide to a Meaningful Future. Dewey Decimal Seeking and Finding God by Dave Hunt The author states that millions of people are willing to risk their eternal destiny that is not a preference like a joining a club. He states that we are eternal beings who will spend eternity somewhere but where and how can we know? Beggar to King by Walter Duckat, which contains all the occupations of Biblical times with a table of contents Failure: the Backdoor to Success by Edwin Lutzer Jots from Jane I am so excited to be your new parish nurse here at Jonesborough UMC! When I was approached about taking the position, my immediate response was, I will have to pray about this. Through prayers and Scripture, I truly believe God led me to take this on as my ministry in the church. Renee set the bar high for those of who follow in her footsteps. Some of you know that I broke my leg back in November, and have been recovering since. God has touched my life in a mighty way through this time of healing. Please feel free to call me anytime. If I don t have answers, I will make every effort to get them for you. I hope I can be a source of comfort for you just as those who have been there for me. My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13. I can do everything through Him who gives me strength. I am praying that God gives us strength to seek His way and give Him the glory for all the great things He has done. Jane Turner, Parish Nurse
3 CHURCH FAMILY NEWS Looking Ahead May 7-10 JAMA Revival June 3-10 Youth Mission Trip June Vacation Bible School Allison Flanary, daughter of Bill and Lavon Flanary, has accepted an invitation to take part in the Haslam Scholars Program at the University of Tennessee. She is one of 15 students accepted into this program. Congratulations, Allison we are proud of you! Andrew Huffine (6th grade), and Patrick Ward (5th grade), are representing St. Mary's School at the Upper East Tennessee Regional Science Fair on April 8. Andrew's project is "Which Wood Would You Choose," and Patrick's is "Gravity vs. Motion." We wish you well as you compete! Sympathy to Nancy Hallberg and family on the death of her husband, Lee Hallberg. If you would like to send a card, her address is P.O. Box 4845, Dowling Park, FL New Members Corner Mother and daughter, Martha Yeomans and Deban Yeomans-Barton joined JUMC on March 5 th by transfer of membership. They have been United Methodists all their lives. Martha is a retired UMC minister and joins us as a congregant. Her last church assignment was in Pulaski, VA. Martha and Deban (nickname for Debra) live together in the same house; one upstairs and one downstairs, having different addresses and separate driveways to their home which results in the address confusion. They are dog lovers and currently have 8 fur babies. Deban was previously a member of Cherokee UMC and for a brief period of time did not go to church. Pastor Karen and Deban have been friends for about 20 years; thus the reason to visit JUMC. Their first Sunday in Jonesborough happened to be one that Pastor Karen was out, but they decided to give us another try the next Sunday. They enjoyed JUMC, noting that everybody was friendly which resulted in asking if they could join. Jane Turner is also a friend of Deban and Martha. Deban has lived in the Johnson City area for approximately 27 years. Upon graduating UT Law School, she came here to work as a legal counsel representing low income persons. Welcome to JUMC, Martha and Deban!
4 Making Smiles and Painting Butterflies with United Methodist Women The United Methodist Women s Sisters of Faith Circle hosted a butterfly painting social in March for ladies in the church. The butterflies are meant to remind us that we should always rejoice in the Lord! No matter what we are going through, He has blessings beyond our wildest dreams for us! We were glad for those that attended, and hopefully, we ll have another event like this for those who were unable to join us. The Jonesborough United Methodist Women consist of the Sarah Mayes and the Sisters of Faith Circles. United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the local and global ministries of the church. The Sarah Mayes Circle meets in the Good News Fellowship Hall at 2 pm on the second Tuesday of the month. For more information, contact Charlene Cleveland, at , or at clevelandcharlene@gmail.com. The Sisters of Faith Circle meets on the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 pm. The next meeting will be April 13, at the home of Melissa Cloyd. For more information or to be added to our list, please contact Melissa at or hiremcc@gmaiol.com. Senior Adult Gathering On Thursday, April 6, from 10 am to noon, the Johnson City UMC Senior Adult Council is sponsoring a Senior Adult Gathering. Join seniors from around our district for devotions, music, storytelling, worship and lunch at Piney Flats UMC, 225 Methodist Church Street, Piney Flats. The cost is $10, and forms are available in the narthex; registration deadline is March 31. Can You Hear Me Now??? Hearing Enhancement Devices have been purchased and are now ready to be used during worship services. The devices are simple to use and an assistant is available at each service to help. It involves a receiver that is at the church and earbuds which each user will be given and will be retained by the user. A few members of the congregation are already enjoying these devices. If you would be interested in using a device, please contact Barbara Smith at and leave a message.
5 Suitcases for Family Promise The Upward Bound Sunday School Class is conducting a suitcase drive for the folks who are in the Family Promise program. Imagine what it would be like to move all you own every seven days. Most of the families carry their possessions in plastic bags or tubs. We would like to provide smaller pieces of luggage which would be collected and stored at the day center and made available to new families coming into the program. Women and children make up the bulk of the clients, so smaller pieces would be best. If you have small gently used suitcases, gym bags or backpacks that at no longer being used, please consider donating them. You may drop off luggage in the Prayer Room and we will see that it gets delivered. If you have questions, call or text Lynda Carter, Thank you. Second Annual Craft Bazaar, Bake Sale and Silent Auction On Saturday, April 8, from 10 am until 5 pm, the Sisters of Faith groups from Jonesborough United Methodist Church will be holding their second annual Craft Bazaar, Bake Sale and Silent Auction. Featuring over 25 local artists, there will be handmade items such as jewelry, dog treats, crocheted items, hair bows, kitchen accessories, candles, pottery, paper quilling, soap, wood-turned items, repurposed crafts, American doll clothes and much more. Items in the silent auction include a stay at a bed and breakfast, jewelry items, quilts new and vintage. There is no charge for admission, but we do ask that you bring a non-perishable food item to donate to the Jonesborough Area Ministerial Association (JAMA) Food Bank. Please contact either Jeri Jones at or Tami Moore at with any questions.
6 STANDING ROOM ONLY On Sunday, March 19 th, the African Children s Choir performed to a bursting at the seams packed sanctuary. What a spirit-filled evening of blessings! Swim Party Fun! It was cold outside, but the kids had loads of fun indoors at the Wellness Center on February 26, for the annual Swim Party. We had a large group in attendance, with lots of pool noodles and splashing around! Everybody enjoyed supper after the swim session.
7 YARN WITH A PURPOSE Yarn with a Purpose has been very busy making items for our local community. We continue making hats, scarves and lapghans to give away in the winter. Our group has grown to include those who want to sew things. They use light-hearted, fun-themed fabric to sew pillowcases, IV pole covers or blankets for Niswonger Children s Hospital. Ladies have started to make themed pillowcases and IV pole covers during certain holidays. We recently learned of a need for twiddle muffs ~ we knit, crochet or loom a muff using leftover yarn of various textures then securely attach lots of things to twiddle, i.e., beads, zippers, lace, ball trim, ribbons, buttons, rings, etc. These are welcomed by Alzheimer patients (or anyone) who tends to fidget with their fingers. Our initial request from an Alzheimer s unit was for 14 twiddle muffs or blankets. Another useful item are neck pillows and a member has started sewing them for nursing homes who either give them to patients or use for bingo prizes. Niswonger also gives them to the older children. THANK YOU for cleaning out your sewing notions! We now have plenty of yarn and twiddle things to sew on the muffs. We can always use gift cards for fabric from Hobby Lobby or JoAnn Fabrics. If you personally know anyone or a group who has needs, please let us know. Everyone is welcome to join us the first and third Tuesdays of each month 10 am to noon in the church fellowship room. If you are unable to come, but would like to participate making things at home ~ that is great, too. Bring a friend, neighbor or relative...you do not need to be a member of JUMC. Come see what we re about! Contact Mitze Anderson or mocha.z8561@gmail.com Here are examples of neck pillows and twiddle muffs... CYB Group Happenings... Don t Miss Out on All the Fun!!! Our CYB Group is very active. Here are some of the upcoming activities: April 13, noon: Lunch at Harbor House in Johnson City April 27, noon: Captain s Table Plans are being made to go to Jonesborough Repertory Theatre to enjoy South Pacific on Sunday, June 25 at 2 pm. Tickets are $12; to reserve a block of tickets, we must make plans during the month of April. Contact Carolyn Tomko at , or send a check to her, made out to the Town of Jonesborough, 529 Bacon Branch Road, Jonesborough, TN
8 Finance Update We are so proud of our congregation in making our gifts and tithes an important part of our Christian walk. Our Finance Committee would like to update the congregation on the amount of giving we have received and the expenses incurred. As we conclude the month of March 2017, our giving has amounted to $99,352. Total expenses for January, February, and March 2017 were $111,193, which means we have a deficit of $11,841 in our giving in comparison to our actual expenses. We want to be mindful of the amount of money required to operate our Church and continue the ministries we offer to people. With your continued support, we can operate within our annual budget and perhaps even expand our outreach programs. One way to do this is to plan NOW to give a 13 th month tithe. You remember that we made this challenge at the end of last year and with your help we were able to almost meet the budget. We would like to ask you to start planning for this or even giving it now, so that we can be certain to do all the ministry God is calling us to do. If you have any questions or concerns about our annual budget, please let us know so we can take any necessary action. Thank you, Finance Committee Keeping Up with the Times On-Line Giving & Tithing On our Church website Through the Mobil Giving App In order to help us become more faithful stewards, the church is now offering online and app-driven tithing and offerings. We have partnered with the company EasyTithe ( to allow members and visitors the opportunity to give online. There are a few different ways to do this. First, you can give through the church website. It s easy to sign up and doesn t take much time. You can also give through a mobile giving app, available for both Apple and Android devices (search for EasyTithe in your app store). That s a really quick way for us to give, especially if we are helping elsewhere during the service, like the nursery or with the youth, or we don t have any cash on hand during the service. I know many of us are new to the idea of online banking, but others may find that being able to give online is easier. We can set up how often we want to give and how much we want to give. Both the online and app options provide a wide variety of ways to give. I encourage all of you to pray about how God is calling you to give and be a faithful and obedient steward in our mission of making disciples. Paul gives us a great reminder of the call of stewardship to the Church. He says: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart not out of regret or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make every grace overflow in you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work. -2 Corinthians 9:6-8 More information is coming. You will be visited in your Sunday school classes on April 9 th to answer any questions, there will also be a quick Q&A session in the Fellowship Hall at 9:45 and 11:45 on April 9 th,. For more information now, you can go to the church website or Call Craig Rudy at
