COUNCIL NEWS November From the desk of Carol Hinkle (HACC Director) I always look forward to the autumn season of the year. The cooler days, the vibrancy of the landscapes in gold and red, orange and yellow, pumpkins and Indian corn, corn stocks and bales of grain all the signs of the Harvest time and Thanksgiving for God s masterful canvas. The bounty provided to us through the growing season has been a huge blessing. The inaugural year of the Community Gardens has been a big success. Well over 1000 pounds of fresh vegetables has been delivered to New Hope Food Bank and our PAL ministry. The PAL and our MOWS recipients enjoyed fresh green salad, coleslaw, Brussel sprouts, peppers, red beets and of course tomatoes. We want to thank the host churches All Saints Episcopal, First United Methodist, St Mark Lutheran and St. Matthew Lutheran for their hard work and productiveness. Also Clearveiw Terrace Apartments had a few raised gardens for individual use and a test of the design for future sites. Thank you to all the committee, master gardeners, Hanover Hospital, Hanover Chamber of Commerce, Lower Susquehanna Synod ELCA, Ames True Temper, Bruce L. Jones Contractors, CHAOS Youth Ministry, GHI Engineers & Surveyors, Hanover Home and Garden, Lehigh Nurseries &Greenhouse, Lowe s, Saunders Lawn Care, Starry Night Ministry, UTZ Quality Foods, Inc Jim Ringer-Tilling Service. So Continued on page 2 DONATE ONLINE TO HACC AT: From the desk of Nancy Werner (Council President) God s blessings or gifts are like the stars in the night sky. In Genesis 15:5, God used this metaphor with Abram. Counting the stars was an impossible task for Abram and for us, as well. As Creator, God did not need an accounting of the stars. The purpose of God s metaphor was not to increase Abram s frustration, for that was growing well on its own. The purpose of the star-gazing that night, I believe, was to remind Abram of the difference between God s way of giving and that of humans. God s generosity is beyond human imagination and understanding; as impossible for us as the task of counting the stars in the night sky. God didn t expect the impossible from Abram. God doesn t expect the impossible from us Continued on page 2 1

2 Continued from page 1, Carol Hinkle many people and services were involved in making this work. It was a true COMMUNITY GARDEN project. A VERY special thank you goes to Gary Laabs who gave us the suggestion, chaired the project, and brought all the pieces and individuals together to make this such a blessing to all. We are already looking forward to next year and even expanding the project (but that is another article.) Along with the fall of the year comes colder weather leading into winter. Our Clinics will have Flu Shots available through our clinic for UNINSURED and under insured adults. We will be unable to give vaccine to anyone with insurance including Medicare; also we will not have vaccine for individuals needing the high potency dosage for chronic health conditions. Please check with us for details at our office Our office assistant, Joyce Johnson is back to work on an abbreviated schedule and we Praise the Lord for that and thank everyone for their prayers. Joyce is our MOWS coordinator and has told me that we have lost some of our longtime driver s and runners. If you would be interested in assisting in this very valuable ministry please call us for details. As always we ask you to remember us in your prayers, We ask for prayers for our ministries, for volunteers who do the work, the recipients in need, and the staff who serve. There is not one area of the Council which doesn t need to be lifted up in prayer, prayers of intercession and prayers of praise and thanksgiving, Our Lord is always moving in this place and we praise Him for that. Blessings to all. November Meetings Nov. 3, 7pm Shelter Comm. at HACC Nov. 7, 7 pm BOD at HACC Nov. 8, 7:30am Building HACC Nov. 21, 5pm Finance St. Joseph Weekly Prayer Requests Week of Nov. 6: Ministries Board Week of Nov. 13: Provide-A-Lunch Week of Nov. 20: Public Relations Week of Nov. 27: Public Worship Committee Continued from page 1, Nancy Werner either. What did God expect of Abram? A thankful heart and belief that through these blessings God would accomplish something great! Some things never change. Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation due to a shadow of turning (James 1:17). God s giving hasn t changed. Nor have we. As people of faith we still receive God s blessings with thanksgiving and continue to believe that God will accomplish something great! Sometimes, like Abram, we all need a divine reminder. For me, the Hanover Area Council of Churches is my night sky filled with stars! Galatians 6:9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give Now Accepting Donations for Our Christmas Shop! Last year we were able to provide gifts for over 60 children and youth in our Christmas Shop. Baby dolls & Barbie dolls (ethnic diversity), cars & trucks, basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, games, puzzles, books, jewelry, & gift cards are all popular. If you have something to donate or need other suggestions please call the Council office at

See how the Hanover Area th Anniverszry CROP Walk went by checking here years-sunday/ /!! CALLING COOKIE BAKERS!!! A couple of years ago P.A.L. received several cases of peanut butter from the United States Department Of Agriculture (USDA) free of charge. Because the products from USDA are free we cannot by law give the jars away. We can however use the peanut butter to make Christmas cookies for our clients. That year we asked for volunteers to bake a dozen or so cookies. The response was overwhelming and we were able to share them with P.A.L. clients, shelter clients, Meals on Wheels clients, Ruth s Harvest Back Pack children and even two Adult Day Care Centers. Last month, as part of this year s allocation from USDA, we again received several cases peanut butter. We are once again looking for volunteers to bake a few dozen cookies so that we can again brighten the day for many of our friends in the Hanover area. If you are willing to share, once again, a little bit more of your time, talent, and love please call the office at , give us your name, phone number, and the number of jars you will need you can then stop by the office any time during the week of November 28 to pick up the peanut butter. We would ask you return the baked cookies to the Council office by December 12 so that we can form teams to pack a dozen cookies in each zip lock plastic sandwich bags. 4 SPOTLIGHT ON MINISTRY In a continuing feature for our newsletter we will highlight a ministry from a volunteers experience. It is important to understand how those who do the work on a daily basis see Who We Are and What We Do! NEEDING HELPING HANDS TO BEING HELPING HANDS It not only takes a village to raise a child, but it can take a village to carry each other s burdens. What happens when we come together to help carry another s burdens? Lives are changed! The Hanover Area Council of Churches (HACC) Changing Lives Homeless Shelter (CLS) ministry does just this. The history of CLS can be read about on the Council website: Individuals come to CLS due to many and varied reasons. It may be job loss, financial hardship due to medical problems, or death of a loved one. Regardless of why they come to us, the goal is to hear their problems, and then make a plan to give them helping hands to put one foot in front of the other to continue moving forward in life. God does not call us to give up when faced with adversity, but it can be difficult to walk in the dark when we no longer see a path before us. CLS staff and volunteers show up daily to be the light for the people who come to the shelter; and lives are changed. He came to us following the death of his mother, and loss of housing. He had spent a few years taking care of his mother, and now needed help taking care of himself. Ted (name changed) did have other issues, and was admittedly lost in life. The first few weeks at CLS he continued to be lost, but with the help and support of the guidance offered he started putting one foot in front of the other. The CLS village of a financial counselor, a caseworker, a case manager and many open ears helped Ted to find a job and begin saving money. He did chores, and lent a hand wherever he could. He finally found a place to move to, and he continues working night shift most every day. Seems simple, but I can assure you it was not. We are able to update you about Ted because we at HACC see him most days. Six to seven days a week, Ted volunteers at Provide-a-Lunch (PAL) ministry helping in any way needed. He now has become helping hands to others. Ted is not the only former resident we see weekly. Every Sunday the Shelter is blessed to have former resident Paul (name changed), volunteering and helping in any way he can. Paul too has become helping hands of one of the HACC ministries. Galatians 6:2 Carry each other s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.. LIVING WITH THE TRIUNE GOD WORKSHOP What is it like to have God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit helping us to live an abundant life? On Saturday, November 19, 9:00 to 3:00, at Zion Lutheran Church, 2215 Brandywine Ln, York, Pa., participants will explore this question in many ways. Registration is from 8:30-9:00. We will engage in a Bible study of Ephesians 4, explore the specific gifts of God as Creator, Jesus as Redeemer and the Holy Spirit as Transformer for us, have small group conversations, and worship. The outcome is personal spiritual growth through the THREE IN ONE. A primary resource will be the new book by Richard Rohr, THE DIVINE DANCE, THE TRINITY AND YOUR TRANSFORMATION. The workshop will be led by Pastor Fred Shilling who has led workshops on variations of this subject for over 50 years, served as pastor of small, medium and large size churches, as a hospital chaplain for over 35 years and a spiritual partner for thousands of pastors and lay persons. The cost for the workshop is $10.00 which includes a Trinity manual and lunch. The cost for groups of 3 is $ To register or get more information, contact Pastor Fred, or fredmar@pa.net. 4

Sunday, November 6 ~ 1 PM ~ St. Paul s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 127 York St. Light refreshments will be served, this is a free presentation. This presentation by Steven Hemler, President of the Catholic Apologetics Institute of North America (CAINA) and author of The Reality of God: The Layman's Guide to Scientific Evidence for the Creator, looks at how the greatest Christian thinkers of all times have dealt with the problem of evil and the mystery of suffering in a world made and pronounced "good" by God. In other words, why does God allow terrorism and other atrocities, as well as disease and natural disasters? This multimedia presentation includes several powerful and inspiring video testimonies. Understanding the meaning of suffering will help us and those we love become better, not bitter, when facing the inevitable hardships in life. 6

7 Trinity Lutheran Christams Bazaar Coming December 3, 2016 IT S NOT TOO EARLY.to think about the upcoming Christmas Bazaar. We need everyone to start thinking ahead of things to sell or donate. The Fresh from the Oven needs more donations of cookies and small breads. The Pantry Shelf can use more canned jellies, pickles, relishes, chow chow, etc. We sold out of them. We are talking about this early so that as the summer comes and fresh fruits are available those that enjoy can make up that jelly. During the summer break remember to make crafts for the Crafty Corner. We need individual crafters to donate their crafts. They don t have to be Christmas themes. The Needle and Thread also need more individuals to make items to sell at their table. We really had a great selection of Joyful Giving handmade gifts. This year will hope for more items as this. Remember to save those Christmas left overs and attic treasures, and jewelry as you look around the closets. Save those books that you have read and pass them on for our Book Nook, Amish books and cookbooks are always in demand. The kitchen crew will be on hand for breakfast and lunch deals. THANKS to all who help to make our bazaar a great success. We need to continue this great endeavor. This year our profits will be tithed to the Harvest of Hope Food Pantry and to Trinity Church Emergency Fund Christmas Shoppes of Grace Annual Christmas Bazaar Grace United Methodist Church 55 Albright Drive, Hanover Saturday, Nov 19, 8 A.M. 1 P.M. Founder s Club Banquet at Cross Keys Village - The Brethren Home Community In 1983, a special dinner was held marking the 75 th anniversary of The Brethren Home where money was raised to purchase a grand piano for the Meetinghouse. Since then, a special group of supporters of the Church of the Brethren mission, now known as Cross Keys Village-The Brethren Home Community, have taken on an annual project that will benefit residents of the community. The 2016 project includes a clavinova for the Honey Brook neighborhood in the Health Care Center and sponsorship of a kitchen in the new Memory Care residence, which is currently under construction. Anyone who chooses to support the annual project at an Associate, Founder or Benefactor level is eligible to attend the annual celebration dinner on Saturday, November 5. Our special guest for the banquet is singer/songwriter Buddy Greene. Growing up in Macon, Ga., Buddy spent his childhood learning folk songs on the ukulele and soon advanced to acoustic guitar. He brings a wide variety of southern Americana influences to create a unique musical hybrid of country, bluegrass, folk, gospel and traditional blues. Additionally, Buddy has established himself as one of Nashville s finest harmonica stylists. In 1991, Buddy collaborated with Mark Lowry to write Mary, Did You Know? For more information on the Founder s Club and the banquet, call the Brethren Home Deadline to register to the banquet is
