1 The Messenger A Publication of Mt. Blanchard United Methodist Church Mt. Blanchard, Ohio June 2009 On May 31 st the church celebrated Pentecost Sunday. For many Pentecost is considered the birthday of the church. In the Hebrew tradition of Jesus time Pentecost was a special observance of thanking God for the first fruits of their labors. It was 50 days after Jesus resurrection when Pentecost took on a new and additional dimension (see the account in Acts chapter 2). God sent His Holy Spirit to fill and empower those early believers, and everything changed after that Pentecost observance. The fears that hindered their ministry melted away. Their lives were filled with a sense of urgency, passion and purpose to share the Good News. And, they received special gifts by the Spirit for ministering to people. In addition, there was a special character or demeanor that was modeled by those believers. Their love and deep compassion made them very appealing to the folks around them, and I feel was a dynamic part of their ministering. I think as people encountered those early believers they thought, I want what they have. This curiosity provided a foundation to build friendships and to share Jesus. Additionally this inner reservoir of the Spirit s presence enabled a peace and joy that just flowed from the inside out. Through our worship in June we will explore and consider how the Holy Spirit is manifested in our lives. 2 Boy Scouts The Scout Troop went camping near Seville, Ohio at the Maple Lakes Campgrounds on April 24, 25, and 26, We were going to camp at a State Park near by, but their campgrounds did not open until the first weekend in May. The Troop had great campout weather with the temperatures in the low 80's for highs and the 60's for the lows. The winds were blowing very strong at times and we watched a couple of families camping near us fling their kites. During the day on Saturday, the Troop visited Lehman's Hardware in Kidron, Ohio. Lehman's Hardware is world famous for handling Amish type of supplies. The Troop made white chili for supper on Saturday night and it was great. The Troop did find time to fish, but Mike Fulk was the only one to catch anything. Andy Beckwith will attend the Nation Youth Leadership Training being held at Camp Berry this year. This is a week long event where they teach leadership skills for the leaders in the troops. They Troop is still working on a date for a Court of Honor for Tyler Fulk to receive his Eagle Rank. We are also plaining a get together to show our appreciation to Scoutmaster Terry Giles for the number of years he was the Scoutmaster of Troop 314. We will post the dates as soon as we get them set. May 29, 30, & 31, 2009: Leen-to campout at Deeter's Woods June 7 thru 12, 2009: National Youth Leadership Training at Camp Berry June 20, 2009: Possible car wash June 26, 27, & 28, 2009: Campout at Kellys Island State Park July 12 thru 18, 2009: Summer Camp at Camp Berry July 21, 2009: No meeting SUNDAY SCHEDULE Sunday School 9am Worship 10:30am Pastor Joe Chrisman Special Ministries Children & Youth Director, Jessica Cavinee Office Manager, Tammy Dunbar Noah s Ark Preschool Director, Tina Thomas Financial Secretary, Tammy Dunbar Treasurer, Julie Miller Office Hours Mon Fri, 9am 2pm Phone: mbumcoffice@wcoil.com Website: Dee Federspell Alvie Williams Sr. Darnell Kirschner Dale Buxton Betty Burnett Anne Morehart Pastor Joe & family Art McDaniel Orlin Wilch Pastor Karen and Tom Roy Kimmel Dugan Smith Our Church in transition Charles Breitigam Catherine Ridge Our Service Personnel Youth Ministries Lawrence Porcello Our nation and world Lindsey Sapp Alice Bibler Brent Sampson Lori Myers Naomi Miller Betty Arnett Doug Dyer Dave Beckwith Candy Wibbing Madge Iams Orville Beckwith Donna Federspell Sharon Lamb Tim Beckwith Tom Martin Jim VandenBosch Lois Romick Bob Pever Jean Ann Lautzenheiser John Miles Abigail Shearer Jim Kelly Rosemary Hickle Dick Kuenzli Tiffany Durenberger Dale Deisler Barb Williams Marge Rodabaugh Donna Belle Lease Family of Melinda Justice Matt Walters Family of Matt Miller and all others silently lifted up in private prayers of our hearts.

Door Prize is 4 Tickets to the Toledo Mud Hens Baseball Game! Everyone wear your favorite team jersey to Church! Donations from the luncheon will go towards the Furnace Fund! Envelopes will be provided to record your generosity for tax deduction! Bo and Joe going on vacation! Bo and I will be headed into the Northeastern portion of our great land during the last part of June. We leave on Friday (19 th ) and will be gone through the end of the month (Tuesday, June 30 th ). Our adventure will include trailering our motorcycle into New Hampshire where we have rented a condo for the week. We plan to camp (in the van) for the several days traveling back and forth. And also ride the motorcycle a couple of days, touring in the mountains and visiting some friends. Bo is hopeful and will be scouting for moose during this restful adventure. Lift us in prayers, and know that we will be praying for all of you. Your pastor & biker in the wind, Pastor Joe The Missions Ministry Team once again has been "very busy". In February we pleaded and prodded the congregation to help support Blanket Sunday. $ was collected and sent. In March we asked for seed packets for Jackson Area Ministries. 674 packets (some of them being large packets) were shipped out the first week in April. In April representatives from Chapel Hill in LaRue, Ohio, came and shared their story of their ministry to families of children with cancer. What an inspiration they were. Lots of tears!!! $ was sent to them as a result of donations given thru the lunch put on by the Missions Ministry Team and general donations designated for Chapel Hill. June 6th is our day to help with the construction of one of two homes being put up by Habitat for Humanity in Findlay. We have a team of at least 20 workers for two shifts that day along with numerous people helping with the snacks and lunch day. $ was donated to Habitat for Humanity thru our VIM account. Jackie Porcello put together a spaghetti dinner which added another $ Jackie is our contact person for Habitat for Humanity and we thank her so much for her inspiration for this local project. In July we will be gearing up for our health, baby, and school kits we put together for our Festival of Sharing. More details will follow along with samples of the kits to be on display on Sunday mornings. These kits need to be delivered for shipment usually the end of September. WOW, what a great mission oriented church we have!! Thank you all for your support so far and your continued support for all our projects!! The Missions Ministry Team

4 Clergy on call: While I am on vacation (June 19 th June 30 th ), my friend and colleague in ministry Rev. Harry Scott will be on call for your pastoral emergencies. To reach Pastor Harry, call Tammy at our church office ( ) or the office at Arlington UMC ( ). Sunday worship while Pastor Joe is on vacation: While I m away worshippers are in for two rich opportunities to celebrate and embrace the invitations of faith. On Sunday, June 21 st Doug Borkosky will bring the message, and then Sunday, June 28 th Jessica Cavinee will preach. Each brings relevant and insightful perspectives to Holy Scripture and our claims of Christian faith. Come to worship on these Sundays to give of you, to support our lay and staff leadership and to be blessed and enriched through worship. Living into who we are as the church! What do you think God desires our church to look like? Who could be welcomed that we have yet to invite? Who do you think God might be asking us to invite that we may be overlooking? And; how might we grow a ministry that models the early church in Jerusalem, as recorded in Acts chapter 2? How can we follow their faithful example today? Eugene Peterson in his contemporary paraphrased version of the Bible called The Message wrote these words in the introduction to the book of Acts. The story of Jesus doesn t end with Jesus. It continues in the lives of those who believe in him Luke makes it clear that these Christians he wrote about were no more spectators of Jesus than Jesus was a spectator of God-they are the action of God, God acting in them, living in them. Which also means, of course, in us? William Willimon suggests in his commentary Interpretation on the Book of Acts that Luke did not write Acts to simply give his readers a historic account of the early church, but to communicate how the church should live and act, and how God interacts with and through the church. (Clergy on call cont.) It was in the power of God s Holy Spirit and with the good news of Jesus Christ, that those early believers changed their world. They understood and were willing to meet the felt needs of those around them, with compassion and a deep sense of call. They were reaching and transforming their community with the Gospel. Their simple embracing and sharing the powerful love of God revealed Christ. The closing verses of Acts chapter 2 opens how the early church ordered them; their hearts and practices reveal certain deeper core values that shaped an inner faith orientation. We (United Methodists of the West Ohio Conference, with Bishop Ough s leadership) have re-gathered those faith values as core process (the journey of disciple making). This process or journey is lived on 4 different faith fronts; -Radical Hospitality: And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. Acts 2:47b -Passionate Worship: Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread from house to house and ate with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. Acts 2:46-47a -Faith Forming Relationships They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:42 -Risk-taking Service and Mission All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as they had need. Acts 2:44-45 Annually as a local church we evaluate our ministry, by looking backward through these lenses of core process. We work to shape our identify as the body of Christ. May we continue to discern our identity as the church, the hands and feet of Christ? May these basic core values push us beyond ourselves and into the world around us? Fellow pilgrim and worker in the Way. Pastor Joe

5 The preschool year here at Noah's Ark has drawn to a close. Artwork is down from the walls, supplies packed away, and students out enjoying the soon-to-be summer weather! We want to thank everyone who entrusted us with the teaching of their precious little ones! We also want to say thanks to everyone who participated in our Spring Program and Sundae Sunday in April. We thought the children did a great job! They sang right out, and chanted at the top of their lungs! Donations from the meal went to help us purchase a large white board for our classroom. It is on the wall and looks fantastic, and is such a handy teaching aid! Registration for our Fall session is going on now. Our curriculum emphasizes listening, pre-writing, pre-math, social studies and science skills. Our daily schedule will typically include, in addition to the aforementioned areas, art and music time, stories, and learning centers. The preschool can enroll up to 24 children between the ages of 3-5, and is in session on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings from 9:00-11:30 a.m. The preschool year commences after Labor Day in September, and runs until approximately mid-may. Our staff includes Deanna Theis, co-teacher and mother of three; and Tina Thomas, administrator, co-teacher and mother of five. Miss Dee has worked as assistant teacher for 4 years, and co-teacher for one year. Miss Tina has 3 years experience teaching Kindergarten, and 3 years experience teaching preschool, as well as substitute experience in grades K-12. If you have a preschool aged child or know of one that you would like to have join us at Noah's Ark, contact the Church office Registration forms. Applications will be accepted until the fall on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please don't hesitate! Register today and save your child a spot on board our Ark!
