1 t 7343 Hermitage Road, Henrico, VA www la sid pre b t ria org The Church of Christ Always Reforming January 2017 : lakesidepc@juno.com. This is the theme of a very special Hymn Festival to be held at Christ Lutheran Church on Sunday, January 22 at 4:30 p.m. It will mark the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, as well as the 500 th anniversary of the Reformation. There will be NINE Lakeside area churches participating in this event, with a joint choir, handbells, trumpets, flute, and percussion. Many different hymns will be sung in interesting ways, alternating with scriptures and readings by the clergy. It will begin with the banners of each of our churches in procession a thrilling sight! A representative from The Lamb s Basket will have a display in the Commons Area, and we are asking that all attendees bring a can or package of food to donate to this worthy cause. January 4- Roy Conner January 6- John Edelin January 8- Hugh Warinner January 10- Pat Dementi January 11- John Fetty, Matthew Beach, Benjamin White January 18- Wayne Alvis January 23- Reed Woliver January 28- Daniel Farley January 29- Karen White Be sure to mark your calendar for January 22! 1

Part of that uncertainly comes from the election of a president with a mercurial personality: as the new year unfolds it is difficult to predict what Mr. Trump will say or do. Another part of the uncertainty comes from Mr. Trump s approach to governing. Having campaigned on a platform of sweeping changes in Washington, there is an expectation that things will be different under his administration. Whether those differences will have a positive effect or a negative effect on the nation as a whole remains to be seen, but change certainly seems to be in the air. As a result, ordinary Americans are dealing with a lot of uncertainty. We don t know what will happen to interest and mortgage rates, health care costs, child care costs or college expenses. We don t know how secure our jobs, or neighborhoods, or our retirement accounts will be. In terms of national policy it is difficult to predict what the status of minorities in our midst will be, or what role religion will play in the shaping of our American identity. These are important concerns for all of us, and I cannot remember a time when there was so much uncertainty surrounding so many of these important issues. Another cause of our uncertainty goes even deeper than our present political 2
3 turmoil. We seem to be losing our cohesiveness as a nation. Some people see that lack of cohesiveness in racial terms: they long for the days when people with white skins set the standards and made the rules that governed everyone s lives. Other people see our lack of cohesiveness in religious terms: they long for the days when Protestant Christians set the standards and made the rules that governed everybody s life. Still others see that lack of cohesiveness in economic terms. They long for the days when the gap between the rich and the poor was not nearly as great as it is today. In the face of all this uncertainty there are many people in our country who want to go back to the way things used to be. The problem, of course, is that no one can turn back the hands of time. There is now more diversity than ever in American culture. Our country has been both a melting pot and a land of opportunity for so many years that we have become a multi-cultural, multiracial, multi-religious nation. What is not clear (and hence our sense of uncertainty) is how we will address that diversity as we move forward. Will we accept our many differences and embrace them as normal, or will we adopt a one size fits all approach and try to enforce uniformity? Will we be a nation that continues to welcome people from around the world, or will we become a nation where only people like us are allowed to live? These are important questions, and the fact that we don t know how we will answer them contributes to our overall sense of insecurity, doubt and fear. In the face of all of this uncertainty we need to hold fast to our Christian faith. A fundamental part of that faith is an obligation to care for all the people in our midst; not just the poor, the elderly, the sick and the homeless, but the foreigners and strangers in our midst as well. The Bible says, When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your nativeborn. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. Since virtually all of us can trace our roots back to an immigrant ancestor who came to this country as a foreigner, this command of God reminds us of our own past. It calls us to be as openminded and opened-hearted as Jesus was when he encountered people from other nations and cultures. Although many people berated him for doing so, Jesus treated everyone with the same care and compassion that he gave his fellow Jews. That s the example Jesus sets before us, and it is one that we should follow. Our incoming president may not have any religious convictions to guide him, but those of us who follow Christ certainly do. Whatever uncertainty we may have about other things, there is no doubt about this: we must accept the people around us as fellow children of God, and treat them just the way we want to be treated ourselves. ---Pastor Dick 3
