1 2012 NACC AUDIO CONFERENCES The NACC is proud to offer audio conferences as an educational resource. As an added benefit in 2012, we will be continuing the audio conferences focusing on theological topics, but have also added a four-part series on Spiritual Care Leadership. General Information: Continuing Education Hours and Cost: Participants qualify for up to 3 CEHs total for the two sessions (1.5 hours per session which includes one hour for the audio session plus 30 minutes preparation time). A CEH certificate is provided for download by participants. The fee is $30 per telephone line for the live sessions or $30 to purchase the recordings. This fee includes both audio sessions. You need to participate in both sessions to receive the full presentation. The speaker will begin the two sessions with a presentation, followed by facilitated participant exchange. The audio files are downloadable from our website once payment is received. Upon payment, the national office will you a password and web-link that will give you access to the recordings. The audio files come in MP3 format and are accessible using a large variety of audio software and devices. Audio Conferences Available: Reconciliation: Meaning, Spirituality, and the Spiritual Care Profession Presented by Rev. Robert Schreiter, C.PP.S. February 16 and 23, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time This audio series will present in the first session an overview of how the term reconciliation is diversely used and understood globally, and then provide a framework for the distinctive characteristics of Christian Reconciliation. Session two will examine a spirituality of reconciliation, and what it can mean to be a reconciling presence in the midst of our pastoral and spiritual care professional settings. Program Outcomes: Following these sessions, participants will: Be familiar with how the term reconciliation is used in diverse settings throughout the world Know the distinctive characteristics of Christian reconciliation Have explored the foundations of a spirituality of reconciliation Have examined what being a reconciling presence might look like in their professional settings Robert Schreiter is a priest and member of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood (C.PP.S.), and an internationallyrecognized expert on inculturation, world mission, and reconciliation, having published seventeen books in these areas. Among them are Constructing Local Theologies; The New Catholicity: Theology between the Global and the Local; Reconciliation: Mission and Ministry in a Changing Social Order; and The Ministry of Reconciliation: Spirituality and Strategies. Schreiter has 1

2 chapters in a further hundred books, and more than one hundred-fifty articles in academic and church journals and his publications have appeared in twenty languages. He is past president of both the American Society of Missiology and of the Catholic Theological Society of America. In addition to holding guest professorships at universities in Germany and the Netherlands, he has lectured in forty-eight countries around the world. For twelve years Schreiter served as a theological consultant to Caritas Internationalis for its programs in reconciliation and peacebuilding, and continues to work with organizations and groups around the world in peacebuilding. He lectures in academic and church circles on inculturation, intercultural communication, reconciliation, religious life, and world mission. He is interested in how the gospel is communicated in different cultures, the relationships of justice, peace, and reconciliation, and in how a theology of reconciliation might shape missionary activity today. Leadership Series Part I: Towards A Theology of Spiritual Care Leadership and Leadership Discernment Presented by Edward M. Smink, Ph.D. BCC March 15 and 22, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time The heart of our mission as spiritual care leaders is to facilitate the belief and experience that one s spiritual strengths are a resource for healing. How does this spiritual leadership shape and influence the larger organization? Can we begin to imagine that we do contribute to and also enhance the organizational spirituality of which we are a part? Within the framework of the organization s mission, vision, and values, what qualities can we discern in ourselves to expand our role as spiritual leaders within the organization? In two sessions, we will explore orienting our organization to this mission, along with envisioning and discerning those dynamic qualities which make us spiritual care leaders. Edward Smink Ph.D., BCC is a board certified chaplain with the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. He completed his Ph.D. in Philosophy with an emphasis in Depth Psychology and Mythological Studies at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpentaria, California. His doctoral work highlights the heroic journey of healing and is titled: The Thresholds of Affliction: The Heroic Journey of Healing. Drawing from his research into the classics of literature, theology, and other disciplines, as well as his extensive pastoral experience as a nurse, pastoral counselor, chaplain, and currently serving as Executive Director of Mission and Ministry for CHI One Kansas, Dr. Smink will reflect on two questions that are integral to chaplaincy: How does spiritual leadership shape and influence the spirituality of the sponsoring organization? And secondly, what are those qualities of servant leadership that influence organizational spirituality? Leadership Series Part II: Interdisciplinary/Transdisciplinary Teams Presented by Linda Piotrowski, M.T.S., BCC June 7 and 14, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time These audio conferences will look at the idea of interdisciplinary care and the ideal of transdisciplinary care. The first session will look at definitions, differences, the chaplain s role in bringing about the reality of these types of care as well as the qualities a chaplain must bring to the inter/transdisciplinary table. In session two we will examine examples of cases in which the chaplain took the key role in patient care. Linda F. Piotrowski, M.T.S., BCC is a long time member of NACC. She serves as the pastoral care coordinator and chaplain for the palliative care service at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Linda is a frequent contributor to Vision as well as an author of several book chapters and journal articles. Linda was awarded Advocacy Honors by the City of Hope s ACE program for her work in advocating for excellence in palliative care. 2

3 Leadership Series Part III: The Value Factor: Building a Case for Spiritual Care Presented by Cheryl Wilson-Weiss, B.S., BCC July 19 and 26, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time These audio conferences will address ways in which we are expected to assess and evidence that value of what we do, including tracking our work, creating/implementing evaluative tools, and reading/responding to customer assessments of spiritual care. Cheryl Wilson-Weiss, B.S., BCC, is the recently retired Director, Spiritual Care and Mission Integration for Carondelet Health Network in Tucson, AZ. During her thirty year career as a chaplain and administrator she has promoted professional accountability for chaplains as well as spiritual formation and holistic healing. Most recently she presented spiritual formation of children for the Diocese of Tucson; Living and Dying and Our Faith at St. Mary of the Woods College in Indiana; and co-presented The Value Factor: Building a Case for Spiritual Care at the 2011 NACC conference. Leadership Series Part IV: Aligning Spiritual Care to Organization s Mission and Strategic Priorities Presented by Mary Lou O Gorman, M.Div., BCC and Jane Smith, D.Min., BCC August 23 and 30, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time How does one frame and structure spiritual care work within the context of mission? Spiritual care leaders are required to create, structure, and sustain spiritual care services that integrate with the organization's mission. This audio series will explore via cases (system, long term care, acute care, hospice) how to think through the process of developing the scope of practice and standards that align with the institution's mission. About the Presenters: Mary Lou O Gorman, M.Div., BCC is Director of Pastoral Care and CPE at Saint Thomas Hospital in Nashville TN. Experienced in caring for persons who are critically and chronically ill as well as their families, Mary Lou has made numerous presentations on the delivery of effective spiritual care and on improving end of life care. Jane W. Smith, D.Min, BCC, was Director of Mission Effectiveness and Pastoral Services at Fulton State Hospital, a long term state forensic psychiatric hospital in Fulton, MO for eleven years. Since her retirement in October, 2011, she has been pursuing a bucket-list entrepreneurial career as a health coach. Both Mary Lou and Jane served on the NACC/CHA Care Services Task Force which developed the Essential Functions of the Board Certified Chaplain and both also served on the NACC Standards Commission at the time when the Common Standards were adopted by the NACC and then adapted with our own NACC Standards. The Enduring Gift of Gaudium et Spes and Reimaging Our Ministry in the Name of the Church Presented by Sr. Carla Mae Streeter, OP, Th.D. September 20 and 27, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time October 11, 2012 will be the 50th anniversary of the opening of Vatican II. One of the gems of the conciliar documents was the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes. Its opening statement remains a mantra for many ministers: The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the humans (sic) of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ. Indeed, nothing genuinely human fails to raise an echo in their hearts. These two conferences will reintroduce some of the core insights/riches of Gaudium et Spes and offer perspectives on how the chaplaincy/spiritual care ministry participates in the Church s mission in the world. 3

4 Carla Mae Streeter, OP, is a Dominican of the Congregation of Catherine of Siena in Racine, Wisconsin. She is presently a professor of Systematic Theology and Spirituality at Aquinas Institute of Theology, a graduate school and seminary sponsored by the Dominicans of the Central Province adjoined to Saint Louis University. Using the resources of the Lonergan Research Institute in Toronto, Canada, Sr. Carla completed doctoral studies with the Canadian Jesuits at Regis College of the Toronto School of Theology in Toronto in She was co-recipient of the first Jean-Marc Laporte Scholarship Award for academic excellence, and the first woman to complete a theological doctorate at Regis College. She lives in St. Louis where she is active on the Board of the Interfaith Partnership of Metropolitan St. Louis and other ecumenical and interfaith activities, including the Living Insights Center of St. Louis. Jonah: A Whale of a Story Presented by Rabbi David Zucker, Ph.D., BCC (ret) October 4 and 11, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time The book of Jonah holds a special place for both Judaism and Christianity. It tells us the story of a person who, like all of us is fallible, at times irascible, and who finds it easier to say no than to take on a difficult, and probably thankless task. Jonah is a liturgical reading for both Jews and Catholics. His story is the additional reading for the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) Afternoon service. Jonah is also a frequent reading in the Church, for example it was read on the third Sunday in Ordinary Time this year January 22, In the Christian Bible, reference to Jonah comes in Matthew's Gospel where Jesus likens his own coming entombment for three days to the days that Jonah spends in the midst of the belly of the sea monster (NRSV); sea-monster s belly (NEB); belly of a huge fish (NIV); belly of the whale (NAB). The Gospel of Luke mentions that as Jonah was a sign for the Ninevites, so likewise would the Son of Man be a sign for the present, evil generation (Matt 12:39-41; Luke 11:29-30). Chaplains can make use of the book of Jonah in pastoral visits, and to supplement their own spiritual support by drawing upon the power of this wonderful and disturbing book. This course will introduce the book of Jonah, and then analyze its four chapters. We will discuss how a careful reading of either the whole book or a selection of specific verses can offer personal and professional insights, comfort, and a release of emotion. David J. Zucker, Ph.D., BCC (ret), recently retired as Director of Chaplaincy Care/Rabbi at Shalom Cares, a senior Continuum of Care Center, and Staff Chaplain at Shalom Cares Hospice, Aurora, Colorado. In addition to numerous journal articles, book chapters, and reviews, he has published several books, most recently, The Torah: An Introduction for Christians and Jews (Paulist Press, 2005). 5 Healing Ministry of Jesus (Scriptural Analysis) Presented by Rev. Stephen J. Lampe, S.S.L., S.T.D. November 8 and 15, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time This two part audio conference examines various texts from the Gospels that describe the healing ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. By examining the who, what, how, when, where, and why of these healing stories, Fr. Lampe will uncover some fundamental facets of Jesus' main message: the Kingdom of God. It was revolutionary then and it is revolutionary now. Fr. Stephen J. Lampe is an associate professor of Religious Studies at Cardinal Stritch University, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Biblical theology. In addition, he is an instructor in the Foreign Language Department, teaching introductory courses in German, Spanish, and Italian. He holds a doctorate in Biblical theology (STD) from the Pontifical Gregorian University (Rome), a license in sacred scripture (SSL) from the Pontifical Biblical Institute (Rome), an M.Div. from St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee, and an M.A. in German language and literature from Marquette University. He also taught for 15 years at Saint Francis Seminary in Milwaukee. Fr. Lampe, a priest of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, has served as a parish pastor. He is a member of the Catholic Biblical Association, the Society of Biblical Literature, and the American Council for Teachers of Foreign Language. He currently serves as a member of the Catholic-Jewish Conference of Milwaukee. Lampe is well known as a presenter on biblical and sacramental topics in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. His current interests include the intersection between the biblical text and the formation of contemporary values; the role of lectio divina in faith formation; and the use of Old Testament traditions and figures in the formation of the Gospels. Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services: Implications for Spiritual Care Decision- Making Presented by Thomas A. Nairn, OFM, Ph.D. December 6 and 13, :00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Central Time These audio conferences will provide both an overview of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, and well as examine these directives as a guide to spiritual care providers daily ethical decision-making. Rev. Thomas A. Nairn, OFM, Ph.D. is Senior Director, Ethics, for the Catholic Health Association, USA. He has taught both in the US and internationally, and has been consultant to multiple organizations on ethics issues. He is in the process of both editing one book and completing another, and has published several articles on medical ethics which have appeared in such journals as Health Progress, New Theology Review, The Annual of the Society of Christian Ethics, The Journal of Lutheran Ethics, the AMA s online journal Virtual Mentor, and the anthology On Moral Medicine. 5
