1 The Monthly Messenger A Note From The Pastor... Sooo how did you do with last year s resolutions? Accomplish any? Still working on some? Need to make some new ones? New Year s Eve always seems to bring a time of reflection about what s happened the previous year and the changes that have occurred, as well as the things that have remained the same. As people make their resolutions for the new year, they consider what has happened in their lives and the change they want to happen in the future. I have heard people say that they want change or we need change. However, I have also discovered they are not always happy when change actually occurs, unless it is the specific change they themselves personally want. God doesn t always give us what we want. God gives us what we need to grow our relationship with Him, as well as others. Actually, when we grow closer to God, it brings us closer to each other. Sooo it really boils down to two resolutions that Jesus gave us a long time ago that pretty much covers everything. Love God Love Others Dalton United Methodist Church JANUARY 2019 If we really do these, it pretty much covers all the rest. God Bless, Pastor Dave Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:5 NIV)

6 Advent Season Begins The Domer family lit the first candle on the Advent wreath. And we had the joy of sharing the beautiful voices of the Dalton High School Choralation that joined us today too. For unto us a Child is born; unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder. These will be his royal titles: Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6 TLB) Page 6 The Monthly Messenger

10 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 NIV) Page 10 The Monthly Messenger

11 LEADERSHIP TRAINING Canal District Leadership Training Event on January Greensburg UMC, from 9 am - noon. There will be four workshops. The Canal District Leadership Training Event will follow a different format this year. It will only be a half day training with four options. Instead of one big event for the year, the district will offer a couple training opportunities, with one option of a training taking place at the Spring District Conference. Workshop # 1 - Rule of Christ - intended for the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee. How to address conflict and miscommunication in your church with more ease and less struggle. The Rule of Christ is a training that connects Jesus teaching from Matthew 18 to the life and relationships, in particular communication and conflict mediation, in our local churches. It is a proven system, with a solid Biblical foundation. Instructor: Rev. Bob Mitchell, Canal District, who has served in conflict mediation in our connection and helped lead the 2018 ROC Training Event for our conference. Workshop # 2 - Accountable Leadership and the Single Board Model. DESCRIPTION: The Single Board Model is a way to streamline leadership within your church that will empower your membership to serve more fully and accomplish it s mission. This workshop will give you the tools you need to move away from a committee-heavy structure to one that frees your church to actually do ministry and not just talk about it. Led by Rev. Jeffrey R. Croft, pastor of Green Valley United Methodist Church Workshop #3 - Local Church Trustees - A conversation touching on legal matters, parsonage/ church building maintenance and capital improvements, trustee responsibilities, and a year in the life of the trustees. Please feel free to bring specific questions to address with the group. Led by Rev. Ed Peterson, district superintendent of the Canal District Office, The United Methodist Church Workshop #4 - Building Our Competency For Relationship Building: How to be a Bold and Courageous Leader in Reaching Newer, Younger, and more Diverse People - Description: Building relationships should be second nature for Christians, but it can be difficult especially when differences exist political, racial, socioeconomic, or generational. Why are differences important? How do differences make a difference. Come learn how to make people feel valued and engaged and leave with tips on building your own and church s cultural competency.
