3 LET US WORSHIP There is a song written by Michael W. Smith we sing in church that is entitled Here I am to worship. I wonder what image or thoughts you have when you hear the word worship. In the context of the song worship refers to our attitude to Christ and what He has done for us. It s about how we approach God and speak to Him, recognising that He is indeed God. However, when we take the word worship and bring it into the context of a Sunday service, it quite often takes on what appears to be a very different meaning. All of a sudden it becomes the hymns and songs we sing, the music we play. We mix up the words worship and praise. Praise is an important part of what we do in church every week as we meet together. Music has a way of touching our hearts and minds that words alone can t. It can calm us when we are sad or angry, but likewise it can also help us to unleash our emotions and express ourselves. Music can help to unlock memories that are hidden deep in our brains. Quite often someone who has dementia, when they hear a song can recall it, even sing it, when normally there might be no communication. So music is an important tool. We are blessed as a church to have people who have been given the gift of playing instruments and others who have great voices. We are so grateful to those who have been serving in this way for a number of years and for those who only recently have started to play and sing. It s great to see children up at the front of church using these gifts because praise and music change from generation to generation. We don t have to go back too far in history to see a time when an organ in a church was frowned upon. And yet if we go back further into the Old Testament and The Psalms we read how every instrument is to be used in praising God. The image we get is of using all that we have to worship God. Psalm 150 (New Living Translation) Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heaven! Praise him for his mighty works; praise his unequalled greatness! Praise him with a blast of the ram s horn; praise him with the lyre and harp! Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes! Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals. Let everything that breathes sing praises to the LORD! Praise the LORD! That brings me back again to the song Here I am to worship. The songwriter is challenging us about what worship is. It is not what we sing on a Sunday, what instruments we use or don t use. Worship is about how we live our lives, every minute of every day. Worship is about how we talk to our neighbours and how we behave when we think that no one is watching. Worship is something that we do as individuals and as a body of believers. Worship is about how we learn and grow together and that was the reason for using the E100 Bible reading plan, so that as a church we could read the Bible together. God wants all of our lives to be worship, using every gift and talent He has given to us to show the world who God is! How do you worship God each day? Rev Jeff McWatters 3

MODERATOR PREACHES IN STREAN It was a personal delight for the Rev Jeff McWatters to welcome The Rt Rev Dr Charles McMullen and his wife Barbara to preach in Strean on Sunday morning 27 th January Charles and Barbara are personal friends of Jeff and Ann-Marie through Bangor West Presbyterian, which was their home church. 5 Philip Causby I ve been attending Strean from 1999 when I met Alison, we were married in 2003 and have two great kids in Peter and Jared. I am involved in Discovery Kids, Football & Fellowship, Men s Fellowship and assisting with the sound-desk. I feel humbled to be called to be an elder and knew God was challenging me in the weeks preceding the call when I was reading in John 15 how we are called to Bear Fruit. The verse that really stuck with me was John 15:16 I chose you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last I feel God is challenging me to bear fruit but also challenging how I can enable others to bear fruit. It s all a little daunting but look I forward to serving and seeing how God leads and works in our church and in our community. My favourite verse is Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Janet Johnston I joined Strean church when I moved to Newtownards in 1988, having visited almost every Presbyterian Church in Ards, this was the most friendly and welcoming one. John Black nabbed me for BB almost before I was a member of the church! I currently look after the Anchor Boys. I ve been on Committee for a couple of years now, serving on the Fund Raising sub-committee. In recent years I ve been coming along to PW when I can and I ve been helping at Tots & Toddlers thanks to a VERY EARLY retirement! When Jeff told me I d got the required number of votes, I was undecided about becoming an elder. I prayed about it, as I wasn t sure if I had the right skills. The next morning my bible reading was about how God called Moses to speak to pharaoh but Moses replied that he was nobody, how could he go to Pharaoh? The writer stated; it s not about who you are it s Whose you are God has chosen us (ordinary people) to accomplish His purposes, trust in God. So I said yes and I am looking forward to serving as an Elder. Carl Harris Our family has been attending Strean Presbyterian Church for 4 years. I clearly remember that in December 2014 we were looking for a church where our whole family could be involved and settle in. We came to Strean one Sunday as we had friends who attended. We were struck by the warm welcome we received from many in the church, and straightaway knew we would fit in well. We soon became members and became involved in church life. I love working with children, and I am an officer in the BB and a leader in the Youth Club. Since 2017 I have sat on the church committee and I am part of the sound team. It is exciting to be involved in Strean at this time. We have been blessed to see new families join the church and our youth organisations thrive. I look forward to working with the elders as we go forward with a renewed vision. My favourite verse is John 3:16. It was the first memory verse I learned in Sunday school when I was 5 years old. It has stuck with me since I became a Christian as a child, and right up to now. Whosoever believeth in him should not perish should be our vision in all of the outreach we do in our church and our neighbourhood. Sam Young I have been attending Strean since my marriage to Roberta in 1983 and became a full member in 2013 following my acceptance of the Lord into my life in I am presently involved with Sunday School, Scripture lessons for the BB Company section, the new manse sub-committee, and I am the Property convenor for the Church and halls. I feel very honoured to have been called to the Eldership in Strean and look forward to helping guide the Strean family in the direction the Lord wants us to go. My favourite Bible passage is Luke15:3-7 The Parable of the lost sheep. 5

6 A time for encouragement Have you been following Brexit? One thousand days in, there are more questions than answers, more confusion than order, more rumours than truth. When we compare this to our Christian life how fortunate we are that the Bible has answers, the Bible has order and the Bible speaks the truth. At our recent service of ordination and installation of new elders, Rev Gary Aitcheson preached the charge. He talked about the Fruits of the Spirit and how these are produced as we follow Christ. Simple words which make such good sense. If we were all filled with peace, goodness, gentleness and kindness to name but a few, how much better our interactions with others and the world around us would be. Gary also urged us as a congregation to encourage the new elders, to encourage each other and specifically to encourage our minister. All these points are important, but the latter one requires special mention at present. Jeff and Ann-Marie have been with us now for just over two years and in that time Jeff s ministry has developed and blossomed and as a family they have been a central part and at the forefront of life here at Strean. During this next period of time they need our focussed prayers more than ever. Perhaps there are also opportunities where each of us might encourage Jeff, and each of us might offer to help and support and serve in whatever way we can. A text message to say thank you or a phone call to ask if help is required can mean a lot to the minister. In his latter years C.S. Lewis had a remarkable correspondence with an anonymous woman in America, with a wide range of problems. At this point he could hardly write because of rheumatic pain in his arm. Asked why he continued to write, Lewis replied that taking time out to encourage another Christian was a humbling of one s talents before the Lord and also as much the work of the Holy Spirit as producing a book. Don t underestimate the enormous value of spiritual encouragement. Ministering to others is much more than the minister s job. There are lots of aspects of our church s life which could do with additional help. From volunteering to serve in the coffee bar, to helping with stewarding and the opening/closing rota, providing help in all of our youth organisations and being part of prayer-times on a Sunday and during the week. At our AGM in March we talked about the financial health of the church and reflected on the administration and governance of our church. These are of course important; but most important of all is the spiritual health of our church. As a body of believers we are called to work together, to dwell in unity, to uphold and uplift those around us. So in all of this let us be encouragers, let us build each other up and most of all support each other during difficult times and circumstances. Fiona Boyle Clerk of Session 6

8 Christian Aid Week 12 th to 18 th May 2019 During the second week of May a team of 10 volunteer collectors from Strean church will join with 57,000 others across the UK and Ireland to support Christian Aid Week. The total raised last year was 8.5 million pounds. This magnificent amount is witness to the Good News lived and proclaimed by Jesus. It gives voice to the Christian desire to reach out across the world with a message inspired by hope and sustained by faith. Christian Aid aim to end poverty and injustice, offering humanitarian relief and long-term development support to poor communities worldwide. By highlighting suffering, tackling injustice and championing people s rights women, men and children are strengthened against future knocks. If disaster happens, Christian Aid has the ability to get people the help they need straight away. They work in partnership with communities to help them tackle the root causes of poverty, campaign that fair tax be paid by multi-national companies, for fair trade agreements, highlighting the impact of Climate Change and strive for equality. During May this year Christian Aid is focusing attention on Sierra Leone. When Ebola struck Sierra Leone, its government had little choice but to accept loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help it cope with the crisis. The country lacks funds for proper health clinics, health training and enough ambulances. This makes it the most dangerous place in the world to become a mum. Debt repayments have left Sierra Leone with even less money to provide the healthcare so desperately needed to ensure mums and babies survive childbirth. The UK Government has a lot of power within the IMF to do something about this. You can sign a petition on Christian Aids website, telling the Chancellor that Sierra Leone must be freed from its burden of debt following the Ebola crisis. We can support mothers and babies by signing Christian Aids online petition pressing the Chancellor to seek: All Sierra Leone s debts on the loans it received for fighting the Ebola outbreak are written off. That urgent action is taken to prevent new debt crises in developing countries and tackle them effectively when they arise. Visit the Christian Aids website to find out about the many areas in which vital help is given across the world. Such need can be over whelming and some may feel that the amount we collect is a drop in the bucket or that our efforts will make little difference, that the money we give will be misappropriated or badly spent. We must turn to the Bible for answers - remember the little boy who offered Jesus a share of his lunch; it ended up providing a picnic for 5000 people. Jesus blessed a small lunch of bread and fish, enough for two, and everyone had enough to eat with more left over. We have a great team who support Christian Aid in Strean, people who collect (house to house), those who support the quiz night and man the street collection at Christmas. Would you consider getting involved? For more details speak to Barbara in the office. The house-to-house collection takes an hour or two a great way to get some exercise and meet people. Not sure about collecting on your own bring a friend. If you don t have time to collect you could post envelopes through the door no need to call back the householder will have all the information they need to either give a donation on line or deliver the envelope to a collection point in the town. How about getting involved with counting the money collected? Pray for Christian Aid Week, that God would open the hearts of people across the country and they will give generously to those in need. 9 UPDATES FROM ORGANISATIONS The Craft class continues to run on a Monday morning from 10.00am to 12.30pm and has an average attendance of members each week. All of the members use their talents such as sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery and patchwork to make many types of items including blankets, cushions, baby clothes, hats, scarfs etc. Several banners that were created by members of the class are on display around the Church premises. Some of the charities and groups that have benefited from items created by the ladies include: families within the congregation who have had a new baby; homeless people in Belfast and Newtownards; the Royal and Ulster hospitals premature baby units and mission work in Cambodia. It is wonderful how this group of ladies, from various denominations around our town, use their gifts to enhance the lives of others. Everyone is always made welcome. Jean Hiles The badminton club meets on Thursdays at 7.30p.m. between September and April and members are in the age range 18 to 60+ years. A team is entered in the Ulster Badminton League and this season has been a successful one winning 6 of 8 matches played. We have developed a strong relationship with Greenwell Street badminton club and help each other out with players for teams and coaching. Our members man the bookstall at the Strean Christmas sale each year and we have a summer barbeque and annual Christmas outing. Bill McKenzie is our allocated elder and we are grateful for his interest in club activities. Stanley McBurney KERRY Skimmen - Strean Bowling Club - winner of North Down Zones January Congratulations to Kerry on winning the Ladies Singles final in the North Down Zones National Competition hosted by Ards Bowling Club in January Kerry is our new 'kid on the block' as she has only started playing indoors short mat with Strean Indoor bowling club and Ards since mid September This is a tremendous achievement for Kerry to win the Ladies singles competition against some experienced opponents from within bowling clubs and churches in the immediate area. Everyone at Strean Bowling Club wish Kerry every success when she represents North Down Zones in the Irish Indoor Bowling Association finals, which are to be held in March Drew Hiles 9

10 STREAN BOWLING CLUB SUPPORT MISSIONARY WORK IN MALAWI In our bowling club we hold an annual competition in memory of the late Freda Algie, who served as a missionary with PCI in Malawi for 35 years. Starting her Missionary service in Livingstonia (Central Africa) Freda moved on to Zomba Theological College where she was headmistress until her death in Her late father Frank, seen here with Rev Wm Sinclair and Byran Lynne, presented a Memorial Plate to the club. Since the annual bowling tournament was introduced in 2004 Strean Indoor Bowling Club has raised over 10,000 towards much needed and numerous projects in Malawi helping to keep Freda s vision alive. The money helps support:- Improving health Funding training of nurses, supplies of medicine, ambulance transport and vehicle maintenance. Health education on Aides and general health care. Help communities: Bore hole drilling for clean water supply and installing water pumps. improving hygiene facilities, new school buildings, supplying various working tools. Helping local people students with school fees, uniforms and materials. The late Freda, Frank and Margaret Algie. Crèche facilities and childcare, training ladies in craftwork and assisting Drew Hiles The 50th anniversary year of Strean's BB has continued to see successes for our boys at Battalion events. Our Junior Section has recently won two competitions - 5 a side football, and dodgeball - and was well placed in the tenpin bowling. Company Section were the beaten finalists in dodgeball, and came 5th in the Battalion Soccer Sixes. All three sections have enjoyed visits from NI Fire & FOOTBALL TEAM Rescue Service, a biomedical scientist, and St. John's Ambulance Brigade. Some Company Section boys also attended an evening at the PSNI training college at Garnerville, hosted by the Christian Police Association. Preparation is now under way for our Annual Parents' Night on Tuesday 9th April. The highlight will be the presentation of the Queen's Badge to Senior Sergeant Aaron Bailie. MAKING PANCAKES One other highlight to mention was that one of our newly trained officers, Paul Moore, was recently selected as one of only seven personnel to represent BB UK at the annual Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, London. This event is the largest annual inter-faith gathering in the UK, where representatives of all 52 Commonwealth nations attend. The Royal Family attendees at the service included the Queen, head of the Commonwealth, who was joined by Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall; the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge; the Duke and Duchess of Sussex; and Prince Andrew. 11 This Session 2018/2019 we are celebrating 125 years of G.B. We are "Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present and Inspiring the Future" - We think it's wonderful to be part of this exciting chapter! Some of our girls and officers who attended the 125th Anniversary Service in 1st Ards Presbyterian Church. A visit from 'Guide Dogs for the Blind' with our Juniors. The Seniors & Brigaders on their Christmas outing at the Christmas Market in Belfast. G.B. Leaders on Tea Duty after morning worship on St Patrick s Day. Sandra Gwynne The youth club continues to grow in numbers and excitement from week to week. We continually have over 60 children enjoying activities such as pool, hoopball, football, hockey, table tennis and badminton. We also provide a movie every night, X box consoles, dancing, board games, archery and a weekly challenge that gets very competitive! A 5 minute bible based epilogue every night is always well received by the kids. The tuck shop proves a firm favourite every week! We would like to thank the church for their support in everything the youth club offers, and thank all the leaders who turn up to help with its smooth running. We have also received generous sponsorship from Pritchitts for Christmas selection boxes and also from Danske Bank, which has enabled us to buy giant colourful beanbags. We finish on 11th May with a final night of Rodeo bull, giant inflatable obstacle course and slides along with a BBQ. Kathie Wilson 11

12 The theme for PW this year has been based on the word Beautiful, What does the word beautiful mean to you? It can mean different things to people - as the saying goes, 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. The aim is to enable women to look deeper into the beauty of God s love and grace. That we will all have a vision; a vision in which, as godly women, we reflect the beauty of the Lord; a vision where our attitudes, actions and words will be an influence on our families, communities, congregations and throughout the world; a vision where we attract others to come meet, respond to and share His love. The desire of PW was to enable and encourage us to see yourselves, the world and its people through God s eyes. Exploring the Beauty of God s creation on our outing in May 2018 at garden of the old Barrack House in Hillsborough. Church family fellowship as we hosted the annual Sunday Soup Lunch to raise money for Missionary projects. Enjoying ourselves as we created beautiful Chistmas table decorations and enjoy a delicious supper. Rosemary Black PW is for women of all ages, we have great fellowship when we meet and always have a varied and interesting programme to suit everyone. Why not take time out from everyday duties and join with us. We mostly meet on the 1 st Thursday in the month from September to April; you could also bring a friend, everyone is welcome. MEN S FELLOWSHIP After a lapse of several years the Men s Fellowship has been reformed, under the leadership of Rev Jeff McWatters assisted by a small committee. To date we have arranged six events which have be varied and well attended. Usually the group meets on the 3 rd Thursday of each month. It is a time to meet informally with others for a bit of craic and fellowship. The final meeting of this session has been arranged for Thursday 25 th April 2019, when we are planning to visit the refurbished Ballygrainey Presbyterian Church. We will hear about the vision, the planning and completion of this project and enjoy a light supper. Please plan to join with us and why not bring a friend? Our meetings have included visits to the Motoring Heritage Museum in Ballygowan and the Alchemy restaurant in Greyabbey for a Christmas meal. John Black 12

13 TREASURER S REPORT MARCH 2019 Property Account During the year we had a total income of approximately 34,000. We had ongoing expenses for maintenance. We were also able to repay our outstanding loans and our halls are now debt free! Mission Account The United Appeal target of 9831 was met and Session were able to allocate a further 6100 to other projects. This included funding for two of our members who went on outreach teams overseas. Through the Children s Society Appeal we were able to send nearly 2000 to what many of us knew as the Orphan Society. The Christmas Day collection for the World Development Fund was a very respectable nearly Also added to this are all the Saturday Charity Coffee Mornings run by our organizations for various missions and charities. No.1 Account Income was similar to last year, however, our expenses increased in all areas and we ended the year with a deficit. While we are still able to meet our financial commitments, we now need to seriously and prayerfully address the contributions through FWO (envelopes) to the General Account our housekeeping account. We have 159 families who regularly contribute through FWO envelopes or by Direct Debit. THESE FIGURES ARE SOLEY FOR FWO ENVELOPES in Some thoughts for you to reflect upon: If all of our contributors increase their giving by an average of 1 per Sunday we would have approximately, an extra 8000 this year v A copy of the Belfast Telegraph costs 1.20 per day ( 1 last year). v A soft drink with your meal out will cost you at least 2 to v A child s Happy Meal in McDonalds costs 3.00 ( 2.99) Do you give the equivalent of the cost of a Belfast Telegraph or a Diet Coke or a McDonalds per week to God s Work in this church? 14 This summer Lewis Getty is going to Comanesti in Romania for 10 days with Habitat for Humanity, on the Youth Build product to build houses alongside local communities. Heather Orr is going to work in the village of Tekoo, in region of Gulu, Uganda with the organisation Abaana from 13 th - 27 th September Please support Heather and Lewis with your prayers; pray for safe travel, team cooperation and friendships, and that God s name will be glorified in everything that they do. Friday 10 th May at 7pm in the Church Welcome Area Julie will bring a wide range of products from the Body Shop and one lucky person will enjoy a makeover. There will be an opportunity to order all your holiday essentials or simply come, have fun and some supper with friends! All commission from sales will go to Holiday Bible Club Funds. 14
