2 June 2017 Dear Students and Parents, Welcome to the summer of 7th grade! You have worked hard all year and now you get a well-deserved break. In order to keep your mind sharp over the summer, make sure you are still practicing your Religion, English, Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Math skills. One of the best ways to do all of these is to read some good books. You can also incorporate a little math into your everyday lives, by taking care of your money or going shopping, checking the temperature changes, keeping track of how far you travel over the summer, or counting your minutes of activity during the day. Of course there are many other ways. I'm sure you will think of a bunch. This summer you will be required to read two books and write a friendly letter. There is required work based on each book. The first is The Pearl by John Steinbeck, (ISBN X). Please read all instructions/directions carefully that Ms. Mahoney included in the packet for this assignment. You will be graded on The Pearl assignments as well as on your creativity and oral presentation. The second book is an award winning survival story. It is Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, (ISBN: ). You have a choice of projects to complete in regards to this book. Please read all the directions/instructions carefully that Mrs. Hutchison provided. You will be graded on the Hatchet assignments and oral presentation as well. The friendly letter instructions have also been included. You will be using a website to create a friendly letter and an envelope. Please read the instructions carefully and be creative. All work and projects are to be turned in no later than Friday, September 1, 2017, to receive full credit. Anything that is not returned on time will lose one letter grade off the overall final grade per school day that it is late. You should be prepared for your oral presentations at this time as well. We hope you enjoy the books and the projects associated with them, as well as take advantage of the warmer months to get out there and just enjoy yourself! Sincerely, Mrs. Peters

3 The Pearl by John Steinbeck Summer 2017 Student s name: Grade 7 While reading this book, it will be helpful to know the following vocabulary. Using a dictionary, define these words. 4 Before reading the novel, become familiar with the deadly or capital sins. As you read, keep these sins in mind. Do any of the characters display these sins? 7 DEADLY SINS PRIDE: is excessive belief in one s own abilities and interferes with the recognition of God s grace. Pride is also known as vanity. ENVY: is the desire for others traits, status, abilities, or situations. GLUTTONY: is a desire to consume more than what is required. LUST: is a craving for the pleasure of the body. ANGER: is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as wrath. GREED: is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. SLOTH: is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work. The seven deadly sins are considered deadly because it is believed they can do terrible damage to the soul. ASSIGNMENT: Part 2: (The Pearl) On a sheet of lined paper, discuss how characters from the novel exemplify a deadly sin as mentioned above. You must write about 3 sins. Each sin should take one paragraph and you must provide examples from the novel to support your claim.

5 ASSIGNMENT: Part 3 Grade 7 Required Summer Reading BOOK IN A After reading The Pearl, select a book report container. The container can be a large plastic (Ziploc type) bag, a manila envelope, or anything else that might be appropriate for the book. Be creative! Inside the container must be the following items: Ten Facts: Student creates a "Ten Facts About The Pearl sheet that lists ten facts he or she learned from reading the book. The facts, written in complete sentences, must include details the student didn't know before reading the book. This should be typed. Create a collage of 5-7 items that symbolize characters or events in your story; OR put actual items in your container and be prepared to explain them. Each student will be required to give an oral presentation of this book. He/she will be expected to summarize the book, as well as present and explain the items in his/her container. Oral presentations will begin the first full week of school. We will present 2 3 per day and go in consecutive, numerical order.

6 Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Summer Reading Project STUDENTS: If you need help managing your time or gathering supplies, please ask your parents. Otherwise, ALL RESPONSIBILITY for the project is YOURS. All projects must be typed or neatly handwritten. You will be presenting your project in class the first Friday of the school year. Be prepared to talk about/explain your project and to answer questions about it. Your work should demonstrate effort so you will be proud to present/display your project at the beginning of 7th grade. Please choose ONE of the following projects for your Hatchet project: 1. COLLAGE: Design a collage with at least 8 pictures that represent Brian's survival experience. You may use magazine cut-outs, drawings of your own, general UNCOPYRIGHTED pictures from the internet, small replicas of Brian's tools, and/or real objects such as twigs, berries and feathers that would be appropriate for the environment in which Brian lived. The collage must include elements of the beginning, middle, and end of the book. A paragraph explanation of the project must accompany the collage. This paragraph needs to describe the entries on the collage and their significance to Hatchet. The paragraph should begin with a topic sentence, have 5-8 supporting sentences and end with a concluding sentence. Please edit your paragraph for capitalization, organization, grammar usage, punctuation, spelling, etc. 2. MODEL: Gary Paulsen describes in detail the shelter that Brian uses. He helps the reader to visualize both the interior and exterior of the camp, along with its relative location along the lake. Create a model of Brian's "world." You may use modeling clay and/or natural elements like dried or living plants, stones, and dirt. Include the location of the crash, Brian's shelter, the berry patch where he met the bear, where he met the moose, where he built the signal fire, and the rescue plane's landing sight. Clearly label everything in your model. 3. COMIC STRIP: Create a colored comic book that illustrates important events in the story. Your comic book will have three pages. Each page will contain a 4-8 frame comic strip. On the first page, choose an important scene from the beginning of the story to depict. The second page should depict an important scene from the middle of the story. The third page should depict an important scene from the end of Brian's adventure. Each pages' comic strip should be neatly colored and should include speech and thought bubbles for characters' words or thoughts.

11 Diocese of Fall River Prayer List This list is designed to note the grade level at which these prayers are to be known by heart. What is essential is that the texts that are memorized must at the same time be taken in and gradually understood in depth It should be introduced through a process that, begun early, continues gradually, flexibly, and never slavishly. In this way certain elements of Catholic faith, tradition and practice are learned for a lifetime, form a basis for communication, allow people to pray together in a common language, and contribute to the individual s continued growth in understanding and living the faith. (National Directory for Catechesis, pp ) These basic Catholic prayers may be introduced to the students in the years prior to required memorization. It is expected that these prayers will be used regularly in the prayer life of the school in all grades. Additionally, all students should be exposed to the prayers and devotions found on the supplemental list at a number of points during their elementary/middle school experience.
