January 2014 Vol. 59 No.1 Chronicle The Newsletter of 102 N. Second St. Memphis, TN I typically love to make New Year resolutions. When I was younger, making a New Year resolution seemed like a wish that was sure to come true. But as I got older, I realized that keeping resolutions is really difficult. Even the best-laid plans, those resolutions with lots of thought and planning, often go by the wayside when the freshness of the new year fades. That doesn t change the value of a resolution. I think it simply means that we have to realize the trick to keeping the resolutions we make. Just before Christmas, I led the middle school Sunday school class. The lesson for the day was Can I be a Christian without going to church? The obvious answer was yes, but when we dug a bit deeper, the answer became yes, but it s not a good idea. We talked about how the Bible never encourages a life of faith apart from other people. From the garden to the apostles, God always wants us to live our lives together, in community. And perhaps that lesson can provide us with the makings of a real resolution. Living a Christmas Life by Christopher D. Girata, Rector and consider how your resolution will connect you with others. We share a fantastic Christian community, but our community is only as good as our commitment to relationships with one another. I know that we all desire a deeper connection to others, so I invite you to resolve to live out that desire this year through our Calvary community. I wish you a very blessed new year! True resolutions, the ones that we make for our own good and the ones we keep are always done in relationship with others. The truth is that we were not created to be alone; we were created to be in relationship with one another. That is the functional heart of Christianity and the Christian community. Jesus came to call us into relationship with one another - true, deep, honest relationship. And without that kind of relationship, any faith we claim to have will only ever be a whisper of the kind of faith God hopes and dreams for us. Great Hall Epiphany Party January 5 ~ 11:10 am This year, as you consider resolutions, consider resolutions that will move you closer to living the kind of life God wants for you

Anne Connell (81) has been a member of Calvary since 1980, and often worships alongside her son Coleman, his wife Kate, and their children Gil, Alex, and Kate. She is a 30-year member of the Guild of the Holy Spirit 2 Annual Parish Meeting by Chris Girata, Rector On Sunday, January 12, the parish will gather for our Annual Parish Meeting. This meeting, like last year, will take place in the nave directly following the 10 a.m. worship service. Anyone is welcome at the meeting, although all children and youth Sunday school classes will be held during the meeting. This year s meeting will begin with vestry elections. All adult members in good standing will be eligible to vote for five nominees for the 2014 new vestry class. I am so grateful to all the nominees this year. Serving on the vestry is a very important ministry and one that members do not choose lightly. I know that any five of the nominees will be a great gift to Calvary s future. The vestry also will be proposing a change to the Calvary by-laws. In hopes of making our annual meeting and vestry election process a bit smoother, we will be proposing to move the Annual Parish Meeting from January to the fourth quarter of the previous year. That will allow us to give the parish an update of the year before it is over and afford our newly elected vestry members an orientation before taking their place on the vestry at the first of the year. As always, the Annual Parish Meeting also will be a chance to hear a report on the health of the Calvary community and our hopes for the coming year. I m excited to get the chance to speak with you all in this open forum. New groups are formed once a year. Since the purpose of the Foyer Groups is to make new acquaintances, we ask that you allow us to do the grouping. However, you may state preferences or special needs. Each group consists of approximately 10 people who arrange to meet together monthly for dinner at a time and date to be chosen by the group. One person in each group will need to volunteer to be the coordinator. Each member brings a portion of the meal, with the hosting member providing the main course. Members will be contacted by the host to arrange the menu. The success of each Foyer Group depends upon the commitment of each member of the group to attend the gatherings. Please make sure your schedule allows enough flexibility to commit to this ministry when signing up. The kick-off gathering for the 2014 groups will be held at Noon on Sunday, January 26, in the Great Hall. The cost of lunch is $8. Your check (mailed to Cindy Yeager, 102 N 2nd St, 38103, by Tuesday, January 21) serves as your RSVP. For more information, please contact Kendra Martin, markaer@aol.com or In order to be assigned a group, you will need to fill out a form on our web site, calvarymemphis.org, by Monday, January 20. You also may sign up on sheets located on bulletin boards around the church. Neta Ford, Sam White, and Tommie Saxon participated in Foyer Groups in Sign-up now to particpate in 2014!

Calvary s Buildings and Grounds Calvary s buildings and grounds committee has worked tirelessly over the last six months to bring about much needed repair to our campus. Projects ranging from replacing failing HVAC equipment (the youngest of which was 20 years old) to repairing a number of leaks in the roof, walls, and even windows that were causing compounding water damage in all of our buildings are under way. These efforts will continue in the coming months as we also begin to address some interior fixes and upgrades. See below for a list of projects completed and currently in process: HVAC: The 1991 Building (the Education building that includes Crook Auditorium, our Sunday School classrooms, the Orgill room and Calvary Place day care): Replaced a 70-ton chiller with a modern Daikin McQuay unit that will reduce energy costs and enhance system performance Serviced the existing cooling tower Insulated pipes to further improve energy efficiency The Nave: Installed a new, significantly quieter and more efficient Daikin McQuay 60-ton air handler and condensing unit New system uses environmentally friendly refrigerant versus the ozone-depleting refrigerant (which has been reclaimed and processed) used by the old system Re-piped our existing boiler and heating by Katie Owen, Parish Administrator system to reduce gas use and expense Installed new duct-work and insulation that reduces ambient noise in the Nave as well as improving system efficiency Upgraded the electrical power system We expect these HVAC upgrades and replacements to yield a 15-20% reduction in energy usage and cost! Deferred Maintenance and Repair: Replaced missing glass and rotten framing in Parish House window facing 2nd Street Addressed leaks in the 1991 building roof. Although that roof continues to provide good service in general, there are multiple openings where electrical and plumbing related items penetrate the roof surface and expansion joints (particularly between the 1991 building and the Parish House) that need repair and replacement Reattached windblown shingles and replaced worn-out gaskets and sealants on the Parish House roof Addressed leaks in the south-facing windows of the 1991 building Stay tuned for updates as we continue to give our campus the attention it needs. Special thanks to our buildings and grounds committee including: Andy Hays, Mark Johnson, John Harrison Jones, David Lusk, John Pruett, Danny McKee, Charles Shipp and Dan Wahl. 5

ACF Winter/Spring 2014 Seeds Taking Root in Our Church, Our Hearts, Our World by Eyleen Farmer, Associate Rector I saw a tree in the midst of the earth, and its height was great. The tree grew and became strong, and its top reached to heaven, and it was visible to the end of the whole earth. Its leaves were beautiful and its fruit abundant, and in it was food for all. The beasts of the field found shade under it, and the birds of the heavens lived in its branches, and all flesh fed from it. Daniel 4:10-12 Building on our "Seeds of Faith" theme in the fall, the Adult Christian Formation (ACF) ministry team is looking to explore ways in which faith particularly the faith of people who call Calvary home becomes manifest in the world. Calvary is a community of passionately faithful people! Can we imagine Calvary as a giant tree with roots planted deeply in the heart of God? Can we see ourselves as branches reaching to the heavens in praise, thanksgiving, and joy? As our faith grows deeper and broader, our capacity to be shade for the weary and broken-hearted, food for the hungry in body or soul, will expand to include an ever-wider reach. That expansion of heart is what Christian formation is about. The ACF team has worked hard to provide classes that will help us put down roots strong enough to support even the most radical response to God's claim on our life. Some classes are designed to enhance your understanding of our own community: our annual meeting, Homelessness and Hospitality, and Ever Wonder what Godly Play Is All About?, for example. Other classes, like the Stories of Faith series, Race in Memphis & Beyond, and Meet the Speakers will open windows into a vast world of what faith makes possible. For those wanting to tend their own hearts, there are several excellent offerings, including The Lord's Prayer Revisited, Parables of Liberation, How the Light Gets In: Contemporary Poetry and the Spirit, and Family Sanctuary. We hope you will come often and be a part of seeds taking root. Sunday Morning Classes for Adults January 12: Annual Meeting see page 2 for more information January 19 & 26: Homelessness and Hospitality (Great Hall) One need only scan the Poplar corridor for an eyewitness view of homelessness in Memphis. Addiction, mental illness, poor health, poverty, and often violence are among the challenges to the journey out of homelessness. The Hospitality HUB seeks to help those who want to begin this journey. Kelcey Johnson, director of The HUB, and Will Hayley, HUB volunteer, will present a two-part overview of Calvary's leadership in aiding some of our most dispossessed fellow citizens. They will also provide 6 some much-needed coaching on how to respond when our homeless neighbors approach us for help. January 19: A look at the state of homelessness in Memphis and an overview of a day at the HUB. January 26: A focus on specific HUB programs for addiction recovery and employment preparedness and a sampling of some of the HUB's success stories. January 19 & 26: Food & Faith (Emison) How many of us have yet again made a New Year s resolution to lose weight and get fit? As we all know, diets don t work, and for the most part, neither do resolutions. Join Michelle Fulmer for a thoughtful discussion on what can be the complicated relationship between food and faith. Drawing on

several resources, including Norman Wirzba s highly acclaimed book, Food and Faith: a Theology of Eating, class participants will explore eating as a spiritual practice and consider how our food choices impact, not only our own bodies and our personal health, but the planet that supports us all. February 2 & 9: Race in Memphis and Beyond (Great Hall) In this two-week series moderated by Calvary parishioner Alex Wise, we will hear about the Episcopal Church s commitment to racial justice and examine our country s progress in ending discrimination based on race. February 2: Chancellor Dan Jones of Ole Miss and Susan Glisson, Director of the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation, will discuss initiatives to spur civil equity and community engagement both locally and globally. February 9: Rob Corcoran, National Program Director of Initiatives of Change, will consider how Memphians can work to meet the Episcopal Church s two relevant Marks of Mission: response to need by loving service and the transformation of unjust structures of society. February 2 & 9: Being Present in a Wired World (Emison) When was the last time you went through an entire day without using your smart phone, i-pad or laptop? The average American spends 8-12 hours every day attached to a screen. Could a digital detox or screen Sabbath be in order? Come learn how to balance the technologies we are attached to with the ability to be truly present to our lives. This class is not about rejecting our favorite devices; rather, it is about reclaiming our lives so that we can re-connect with ourselves, our families and with our spiritual life. This bound-to-be-lively class will be facilitated by two of Calvary s savviest technology geeks, Gabriela Cuellar-Councell and the Rev. Ben Robertson. February 16, 23 and March 2: Stories of Faith (Great Hall) Author and essayist Barry Lopez once remarked that All that is holding us together is stories and compassion. In this three-part series we will hear stories of how faith inspires and animates a life of compassion for others. February 16: From the basement of Calvary Church to an office on the mall in Washington D.C., Pat Morgan has committed her life to justice for and simple kindness to those whom Jesus called the least of these. Her book, The Concrete Killing Fields, was released in December, February 23: Stephen Bush. March 2: The Rev. Elaine Blanchard is passionate in her belief that healing comes when we are empowered to tell our stories. A consummate story-teller herself, Elaine will give us a preview of Inside Story, the recently completed documentary about her work with incarcerated women. February 16, 23, & March 2: Meet the Speakers (Emison) For three Sundays in Lent we will use the Emison Room to get better acquainted with three of our Lenten speakers: Mark Muesse of Rhodes College, Rev. Becca Stevens of Thistle Farms in Nashville, and journalist Ray Suarez of the Washington press corps. Sunday Morning Classes for Children & Youth Ages 0-5 Sunday Morning Nursery Care Calvary provides an excellent nursery facility for children ages five and under. 8 Koinonia is Calvary s Wednesday evening program of dinner, worship, classes, and choir rehearsals. Wednesday Evening Classes for Adults Emison Room Family Sanctuary Parents are invited to share joys and frustrations, victories and setbacks, along with strategies that work to make family life more manageable and fulfilling. Facilitated by Ben Boeving, part support group, part therapy, part live comedy, this group is guaranteed to settle jangled nerves and broaden your circle of friends. Montgomery Foyer Family Sanctuary Parents of young children and new Calvary families are invited to join this new, second Family Sanctuary. Building on the successes of the Emison Room Sanctuary, join Associate Rector Ben Robertson and Dr. Ron McDonald for a exciting and meaningful opportunity for community, laughter, support, and the realization that everyone else s family is just as crazy as yours. Journey January 8-February :30 p.m. If you could ask God one question, what would it be? Join old friends and new friends in an exciting program this winter when Calvary renews the Journey course. Journey gives everyone the opportunity to explore the meaning of life in a relaxed, friendly setting. Each session begins with dinner and a chance to get to know others. Then there is a short talk which looks at a different aspect of the Christian faith each week. This is followed by a time of discussion in small table groups where everyone is welcome to contribute their opinion and ask questions. People usually stay in the same small groups for the duration of the course so they can get to know each other, continue discussions and deepen friendships. Everyone is welcome! The Journey course will meet on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30 p.m., in the Great Hall, for eight weeks, beginning January 8 and ending February 26. If you would like to join us for Journey, please contact Ebet Peeples at epeeples@calvarymemphis.org to reserve your space. Parables of Liberation January 8-February 26 6:30-8 p.m. In his book, The Cotton Patch Parables of Liberation, Bill Lane Doulos compares the parables of Jesus to a Trojan horse. A superficial reading suggests an amusing if sometimes puzzling story. But as these stories begin to make their way into our hearts, we realize they are saying something entirely different, and that difference is radical and subversive. In this eight-week class, participants will seek to experience Jesus parables as a doorway into a fuller and more joyous discipleship. Class components include silence, prayer and reflection, and a commitment to active class participation. Sponsored by the Memphis School of Servant Leadership, this class will be facilitated by Cap Pinkham and Eyleen Farmer. Class size is limited and advance registration is required. To register, or if you want to know more, contact Eyleen at efarmer@calvarymemphis.org or , ext Wednesday Evenings for Children & Youth Ages 0-5 Nursery 5:30-7:30 Childcare for children ages 0 5 is available in the Orgill Room from 5:30 p.m. until the end of classes at 7:30 p.m. Kindergarten-5 th grade Children s Choirs 6:15-7 p.m. Two choirs rehearse simultaneously on Wednesdays from 6:15 7 p.m.: the St. Cecilia Choir for K-1 st grades, and the Boys and Girls Choir for Grades 2 and up for unchanged treble voices. Jason Kindel leads the St. Cecilia Choir. Jason is one of the bass staff singers in the Calvary Choir. He has worked as a music educator in both public and private schools in the Memphis area, and he brings great skill and expertise in working with young children s voices. Using a variety of different activities, he helps them learn to use their voices, teaches them hymns and other sacred songs, and guides them in what it means to sing as a choir. 8

Organist-Choirmaster Kristin Lensch, uses the Voice for Life curriculum established by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), which promotes a complete and quality approach to children s music ministry. It is as much a Christian education experience as it is a musical training experience, and provides opportunities to achieve concrete goals. Over time, choristers often become peer leaders as they progress through the program. What you will notice most at first, is that the choristers will sing more frequently, and sometimes the same anthems with the Calvary Choir. Contact Kristin Lensch, klensch@calvarymemphis.org, for more information, and to sign-up for either choir. Grades K-5 Children s Activities From 6:15-7:30 p.m., children will have the opportunity to work on homework, arts and crafts, and other activities. Led by Hilary Chipley and Emily Smith. 6 th -8 th Grades Genesis Maker Lab 6:30-7:30 p.m. This class is designed for middle school students in grades six through eight. The purpose of GML is to mentor youth who would like to create things in a group setting, understand how things work and how to make their own ideas work, learn how to turn their ideas into reality, build courage and confidence to create, and promote fellowship. Youth are given the opportunity to deconstruct, reconstruct, and reinvent the world around them by starting simple and moving where the Spirit takes them. The Library is Neon Green! by Library Guild Calvary s Library is pleased to offer books written by our 2014 Lenten Series Preachers. Contact Merrill Ann Cole to sign up, merrill.ann@juno. com or Calvary Cycle of Prayer Begins its 12 th Year by Ebet Peeples, Assistant to the Rector At Calvary, we recognize that our parish s greatest gift is her people. For this reason, in 2002, we created the Calvary Cycle of Prayer as a means of giving thanks for and celebrating the life and ministry of all our members. Over the last 11 years, week-by-week, all year round, we have prayed our way through the parish list. We thank God for their presence among us for their participation in our worship life, for their financial support, for their commitment to grow in faith and understanding, and for their involvement in church and community ministries. And we give thanks for the good things that God accomplishes through them. In order that other parishioners may include them in their personal prayers during the week, their names are listed in the Chronicle and the Sunday service sheet. Their names are read several times during the week: by the Intercessor during the Prayers of the People on Sunday morning, by lay readers at Morning Prayer, and by members of the Daughters of the King. When we pray for each other, we are reminded how blessed we are to be a part of this community of Christ. The Cycle of Prayer helps to remind us that it is the people of Calvary that make this historic, sacred space at the corner of Second and Adams so special. Have you written a book? Calvary is making a list of all our authors and we want to know if YOU have written a book! If you have been published (or know of a Calvary parishioner who has), send the name of the author along with the title of the book(s) to the Rev. Eyleen Farmer, efarmer@ calvarymemphis.org or , ext
