CHRISTMAS EVE 10:30 PM

PROCLAMATION The Birth of Christ Many ages after God created the heavens and the earth, when man and woman were formed in God s own image; long after the great flood, when God set the rainbow in the clouds as a sign of the covenant; twenty-one centuries from the time of Abraham and Sarah; thirteen centuries after Moses led God s people to freedom; eleven centuries from the time of Ruth and the judges; a thousand years from the anointing of David as king; in the sixty-fifth week as Daniel s prophecy takes note; in the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad; the seven hundred and fifty-second year from the founding of the city of Rome; the forty-second year of the reign of Octavian Augustus; in the sixth age of the world, all earth being at peace, Jesus Christ, eternal God, Son of the eternal Father, willing to hallow the world by his coming in mercy, was born of the virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judea. Today is the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, God made flesh. from Martyrologium Romanum, 1583 WELCOME! Everyone is welcome. 3 HOLY COMMUNION NATIVITY OF OUR LORD Christmas Eve December 24, :30 p.m. Exploring the promise of God for all Christ is our rising sun bringing light to the darkness On a long winter evening we gather to proclaim the coming of the light. Isaiah announces that the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. In his letter to Titus Paul reminds us that the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all. In the familiar account of Christ s birth, the evening sky is bright with the heavenly host singing, Glory to God in the highest. Amid our broken world we proclaim that the prince of peace is born among us. God comes to us in human flesh so that we may be bearers of divine light to all the world. The Holy Spirit gathers us in unity on the eve of Christ s birth. GATHERING PRELUDE Carols for Harp, Violin and Organ The carillon calls the assembly to worship; please stand and face the worship leaders at the entrance. PROCESSIONAL CAROL (hymn) 283 O Come, All Ye Faithful stanza 2 in harmony GREETING AND PRAYER OF THE DAY P The light and peace of Christ be with you all. a And also with you. P Let us pray. Good and gracious God, on this holy night you gave us your Son, the Lord of the universe, wrapped in swaddling clothes; the Savior of all, lying in a manger. Draw us into the mystery of your love, join our voices with the heavenly host, and give us a place among the shepherds that we may find the one for whom we have waited, Jesus Christ, the Messiah and Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. a Amen. 3

CAROL BY THE CHOIR Surge inlaminare Surge inluminare popule Dei quia venit lumen tuum. Arise, shine you people of God for your light has come. James Biery I will robe you in joyfulness, in vesture of light I will veil you, clothe you in a garment spun of justice, in truth beyond all time. God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song This poem promises deliverance from Assyrian oppression, a hope based on the birth of a royal child with a name full of promise. While Judah s king will practice justice and righteousness, the real basis for faith lies in God s passion for the people: The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this! (pew bible, front page 598) I will shine forth my light eternally for all my people a beacon for ages without ending, forever. WORD READING A child is born for us Isaiah 9:2-7 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. 3 You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. 4 For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. 5 For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. 6 For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this. The word of the Lord. a Thanks be to God. The appearance of God s grace in Jesus Christ brings salvation for all humanity. Consequently, in the present we live wisely and justly while also anticipating the hope of our Savior s final appearance. (pew bible, back page 190) READING The grace of God has appeared Titus 2:11-14 Paul writes to Titus: The grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all, 12 training us to renounce impiety and worldly passions, and in the present age to live lives that are self-controlled, upright, and godly, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14 He it is who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. 4 The word of the Lord. a Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL PROCESSION Lord Has Come French Carol, arr. Cathy Moklebust Please stand to face the gospel as it is proclaimed in the midst of the assembly. GOSPEL God with us Luke 2:1-20 P The holy gospel according to Luke. a Glory to you, O Lord. God s greatest gift comes as a baby in a manger. Angels announce the good news of great joy and proclaim God s blessing of peace. (pew bible, back page 50) In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 All went to their own towns to be registered. 4 Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David. 5 He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. 8 In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, Do not be afraid; for see I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: 11 to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors! 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us. 16 So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. 17 When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. P The gospel of the Lord. a Praise to you, O Christ. CAROL (hymn) 289 Angels We Have Heard on High sung in harmony SERMON silence for reflection CAROL (hymn) 292 Love Has Come 5

6 God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ NICENE CREED A With the whole church, let us proclaim our faith. a We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION A Rejoicing that the grace of God has been revealed in the birth of Jesus Christ, the light of the world, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God s creation. after each petition: Lord, in your mercy, a Hear our prayer. P Trusting in your mercy, O saving God, we commend to you all for whom we pray, through the one born among us, Jesus Christ our Lord. a Amen. MEAL PEACE P Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given. And his name is Prince of Peace. The peace of Christ be with you always. a And also with you. The assembly is invited to greet one another, sharing God s peace.

The offering is gathered for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. During this time, the table is set. After the offering is gathered, bread, wine, money, and other gifts are brought forward. The assembly stands as the procession reaches the chancel. OFFERING The offering is received. What Sweeter Music John Rutter Offertory Carol (hymn) 267 Joy to the World Offertory Prayer A Let us pray. a God of time and eternity, you have given your only Son, born of Mary, to save and redeem us. Bless us with all good things, that the works of our hands through all the years of our lives may proclaim the news of your redeeming love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. a And also with you. 7

P Lift up your hearts. a We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. a It is right to give our thanks and praise. P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy... join their unending hymn: All who come seeking Jesus are invited to receive these gifts of God. Communion at this service is served standing at stations. Please follow the direction of the ushers to a communion station. The presider continues with the Great Thanksgiving concluding: Lord s Prayer (1975) a Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread and Invitation to the Table Communion Grape juice and gluten-free bread are available upon request. Children are welcome to receive communion or a blessing. Have your child extend their hand if they wish to receive communion. 11 WORSHIP LIFE The Twelve Days of Christmas You probably know the song The Twelve Days of Christmas. Even though a radio station once proclaimed the twelve days of Christmas as those before December 25, Christians have always kept Christmas as a season from December 25 until January 6 (Epiphany). More than just Jesus birthday, the Christmas season is a time for remembering and reveling in the nativity of Christ, the revelation of Christ to the Jewish shepherds, the revelation of Christ to the Gentile magi (that s us!), Christ s baptism by John in the Jordan then begins a series of further revelations about who this Jesus is. In all these saving events, we know that the Word is made flesh and dwells among us. How can we keep Christmas not just as a day, but as a season? Keep the tree up (and watered!) and shining bright. Sing carols and read the scriptures every day. Safely put candles around your creche: Use small glass votive candle holders, and place them away from the straw. You might also want to add a little water to the bottom of the glass before putting the candle in an added precaution that will also help you clean the glass more easily. When you light the candles, sing or say the prayer of the angels: Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and forever. Amen! adapted from text by David Philippart 1997 LTP, Chicago; used with permission The Twelve Days of Christmas names each day in the festival of Christmas which concludes with the festival of Epiphany. The gift given on each day represents a key Christian teaching. One partridge Two turtledoves Three French hens Four calling birds Five golden rings Six geese Seven swans Eight maids Nine ladies Ten lords Eleven pipers Twelve drummers Christ, God s greatest gift, who longs to gather us under his wings The sacrifice Mary and Joseph offered when they presented Jesus in the temple; or the Old and New Testaments Several possibilities - the gifts of the magi; the virtues of faith, hope and charity; the Trinity The four evangelists who announce the Good News The five books of the Pentateuch - Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy The six workdays of the week The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit The eight beatitudes; or Noah and his companions The nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22) or the nine ranks of angels: seraphim, cherubim, thrones, dominions, virtues, powers, principalities, archangels, and angels The Ten Commandments Eleven faithful apostles Twelve tribes of Israel, twelve statements in the creed Some believe the song was composed by English Catholics as a way of passing on their faith during the suppression of Catholicism in England (mid-1500s to mid-1600s). 11
