1 The Presby News Canby Presbyterian Church August 2018 Newsletter Pastor s Pen August 2018 As most of you know I have attended Synod School ever since I came to Canby. It is always held on the last week of July at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake Iowa (Yes that s where my daughter goes to school.) I was enticed to go by a full ride scholarship to attend a two year seminar for newly ordained clergy. I brought my family with because Synod School is not just for pastors. It really is for anyone who wants to get away and be with a bunch of Presbyterians exploring their faith and hobbies. That first year the seminar took all of my time. The following year I was able to take afternoon classes that I wanted, and the last few years I was able to take any class I wanted. This year I went a step further and became a teacher/staff member. I was the middle school coordinator for the week. This meant that I was in charge of the middle school teachers and curriculum. I thought I would tell you what a day at Synod School Looked like this year. We usually use the forum building a lot; including the cafeteria for meals. This year they are remodeling it so Breakfast was from 6-8 am in the field house. I have to give a tip of the hat to the cooking crew because they had to use the high school kitchen which was a mile away to prepare all the meals. The food was the usual good quality, despite the logistical nightmare of feeding 640 people three times a day. After breakfast there was a brief morning worship and then the convocation speaker. Jason Santos spoke on millennials and the church. I spent time in a separate middle school convocation that had a lot of music and each day focused on one of the five senses. There are two morning sessions and two afternoon sessions. My first morning session was about trickster tales in various cultures. In the second morning session Genevieve and I learned about the food, feasts, and festivals that Jesus would have participated in. We also got to try some o the things that he would have eaten. In the afternoon I acted as a second adult in a middle school hand bell class. This included me marching and ringing two big hand bells in the Thursday worship. My other afternoon class focused on card games and how having a game night could be a draw to a church. After supper, there was another full worship service followed by mini courses on topics ranging from a continued conversation with the convocation speaker, to a General Assembly update, to news from various Presbyterian agencies. There was also an all ages dance on Wednesday and a teen only dance Thursday. Tim Harmon, the pastor at Lake Park Presbyterian Church in Lake Park Iowa and I ran a board game time with games for people to learn and play. It was a great week of learning and meeting old friends and making new ones. I would highly recommend that you consider joining us next year. Blessings, Pastor Steve Genevieve wearing the hat (second picture) that she knitted in class. Pastor Steve ringing bells as big as his head in worship Thursday night Morgan singing God Help the Outcast in the talent show.

Memorial Gift Suggestions If you are considering a memorial gift to First Presbyterian Church, the following categories are suggested: Building Improvements Electronic Equipment Landscaping Mission Projects Library Undesignated Music Mission Committee News Members of our congregation donated $240 worth of school supplies to be sent to help children in central Asia. The mission committee added an additional $80 and we filled 20 boxes that were shipped by the Baptist Church to Pastor Cooper who is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves and is currently deployed in the area. Pastor s Vacation Pastor Steve will be on vacation August 27th through September 10th.
4 Rev. Henry Wingblade once compared the Christian personality to the unseen soup in a bowl carried high over a waiter s head. No one knows what's inside unless the waiter is bumped or trips. If Jesus is truly living inside us, Wingblade said, what spills out should be the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. When you falter, what do people see? How can your spillage better reflect the Holy Spirit, who lives in you? Folks gathered for our annual worship service in the park on July 22nd. The weather wasn t too hot and it didn t rain. If you have a question for this question & answer column you can give it to Pastor Steve or you can drop it in the prayer request box at the back of the sanctuary if you would rather remain anonymous. Q: Does anyone read the frequently asked question? A: That is an excellent question. All those who actually read this article should mention it to Pastor Steve this month. We have not had a single submitted question that was not made up by pastor Steve. If there are no questions perhaps we will fill this space with pictures of cute dogs or cats or hippos or something!
