1 July 2018 From Pastor Carl s Desk By Pastor Carl Billings A Word About Sabbath Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, Deuteronomy 5:12 Summertime is vacation time. It is in this season of the year that we take time to get away: family vacations, time up at the cabin, road trips. This summer I want to encourage you to make room in your vacation (and really the rest of your life) for some Sabbath time. You see, Sabbath is more than a day. It is any time that you set apart for a special purpose, which, by the way, is the original meaning of the word holy. Here are three reasons to go into Sabbath time. The first purpose is simply rest. The instruction from God in Deuteronomy was that On it (Sabbath) you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant That rest is important because it is a reminder that your life doesn t depend on you. We can turn our abilities, our talents and ourselves into idols thinking that our life depends on what we do and how we work. God is not against hard work, but we need to have regular times that we stop, rest and realize that ultimately our life depends on God s graciousness. In Deuteronomy 5:15 God reminds the Israelites that they were slaves in Egypt and could not rest until God brought them out of Egypt. Their lives depended on God s action not their ability to work. Second, connecting with God is, of course, an important part of Sabbath time. The Sabbath commandment is part of the commandments dealing with our relationship with God: You shall have no other God s before me, You shall not use the Lord your God s name in vain. It is times of Sabbath that reminds us to keep God central in our life and to honor that special relationship. Whether it is taking time to thank God for the beauty of nature as you fish on your favorite lake or special time of family devotion during family vacation or just spending a little extra time in God s word, connecting with God is an important time of Sabbath. Finally, take time to connect with others family and friends. I always loved the family vacation because it was a special time to bound as a family and an important part of that was to acknowledge that the Lord God was also part of our family. It is not an accident that the next commandment is Honor your Father and Mother. The two go together in making a healthy family. In fact, times of Sabbath and rest are important for any community. So as you are out and about this summer I want to encourage you not just to go on vacation but to mark out times of Sabbath rest. 3 From Pastor La s Desk Pastor La Andriamihaja Happy summer Discover Church Family! It is my prayer that as the sun shines and heats up our summer days, may you feel and trust in the love of the Son (Jesus) who loves you more than life itself and calls you to shine brightly like the sun, wherever we are, all for His glory. Re: Discover Church Serves Ministry (DCSM): I want to thank the following people for their dedication and passion by joining me in distributing over 500 invitation flyers to our neighbors, inviting them to come and join us at our Outdoor Worship Service last month. A great big Thank You to, Dave & Diane Nelson, Linda Beck, Sandy Steiger, and Lori & Greg Vettrus. We had fun! In the next several months, I hope to identify, invite and implement specific community-impacting ministries by our DCSM, that all members of Discover Church will partner and engage in. Such ministry opportunities could look like having volunteers do some summer readings to school-age children at Hospitality House in North Minneapolis; or on a hot summer afternoon, we could have groups of people donate and hand out cool water bottles to people at some busy intersections in our communities. And if you have some cool ideas that we can implement and impact the lives of our neighbors, please feel free to let me know about them. So please stay tuned for more info and for the invitation to join us in making the light of Christ shine and for our community to learn and know of the love and power of God at work through our congregation. Have a cool and delightful summer months Pastor La Church Council President Jason Waldron A FINANCIAL UPDATE FROM OUR COUNCIL PRESIDENT Thanks for your continued generosity and support of the ministries at Discover Church. It has been a joy and a blessing to see God move through our congregation in regards to our finances. Throughout the first half of this year we have been able to make great strides on restoring some of the reductions that were necessary to get our financial house in order. As of May 1, 2018 Pastor La s hours and compensation were restored to 2/3 of his full time salary. In addition, as of May 31 we have paid back the building fund what was borrowed to cover our shortfall in We are cautiously optimistic that by the end of the year we will be able to restore the salary cuts taken by Pastor Carl and Pastor La, as well as hire a Hospitality Coordinator. We are hopeful that this financial trend will continue and that after restoring compensation and staff positions we will be able to also restore the ministry budgets that have been reduced over the last few years. I d like to take this opportunity on behalf of the council to thank the congregation for your generosity financially and with the time you give to the vision and mission of Discover Church. I d also like to thank the staff for the ways in which they have stepped up to lead and serve during a difficult financial time for our church. Their faithfulness and devotion is an amazing example for us to follow. We are thankful about the progress that has been made in our financial situation and excited to see what God does through this congregation as we continue inviting all people to discover their full life in Christ. Please continue praying that as a church we will continue to move forward in following God s will and plan for our congregation and that we would move beyond these budget issues so that our focus can be on the work that He has called us to. Shine On, Jason Waldron, Discover Church Council President July 2018 page 3

By Jean Hansen Seek and find What s on my mind Share your love Be kind Tune in to God Focus He speaks to us God is Big! No limits on Him Stick with God God s Got It! And we ll win! Wordservants By Nancy Brown John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. I used to be in a group called Wordservants, because we are Christian writers and because we believe in the Word -that it has power! We, you and I, are all servants of Jesus. We pray and also meditate on favorite scriptures. The Word strengthens us and helps us defeat the enemy's lies. The devil wants to kill and destroy. But God wants only good things for us. Right now a young person I know is dealing with low self esteem. He is believing lies about himself and his abilities. He needs more faith to know that God loves him just as he is. And that God has so much more for him. He can be healed if he believes God and the love He gives. It will help if he quotes scripture aloud to himself daily. God is speaking when He says "I will hold you by my hand." Just like a good parent, God is close by. Build up your faith so that you do not become weary, but be filled with the Holy Spirit through the Word. Holy Hugs, Nancy Brown July 2018 page 9
