Trinity Lutheran Church Combined Worship Service June 9, :00 am Third Sunday After Pentecost PRELUDE MUSIC WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP: based on Psalm 146: 5-10 L) Rejoice and put your trust in God, creator of heaven and earth, whose faithfulness and justice extends through all time. God reaches out compassionately - lifting up those who are bowed down, oppressed, imprisoned and hungry; upholding the defenseless and casting down the oppressors. C) We rejoice and praise God who will reign forever - for all generations. GATHERING SONG: We Are One In The Spirit Verse 1: Chorus: Verse 2: Verse 3: Verse 4: We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord, We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord, And we pray that all unity may one day be restored: And they ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, Yes, they ll know we are Christians by our love. We will walk with each other, we will walk hand in hand, We will walk with each other we will walk hand in hand, And together we ll spread the news that God is in our land: (Chorus) We will work with each other, we will work side by side, We will work with each other, we will work side by side, And we ll guard each one s dignity and save each one s pride: (Chorus) All praise to the Father, from whom all things come, And all praise to Christ Jesus, His only Son, And all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one: (Chorus) CCLI#
CONFESSION L) Merciful God, we know that your Spirit blows where it will, but we confess that there are times when we want to shape it to suit our will, our needs, our future. C) As Jesus emptied himself of his needs and filled himself with the needs of others... help us to do likewise. L) Compassionate God, we believe that your glory is evident all around us in creation and in people. We confess that, all too often, events in our lives and in our world lead us to feel that our landscapes are bereft of your presence and your glory. C) As Jesus took risks to reveal the depth of your compassion and love... help us to do likewise. L) God of history, we hear these stories from scripture, of death being overcome by life, but we find ourselves being influenced by increasing images of conflict and violence. We forget that Jesus spoke words of blessing, joy and peace even as he shared his last meal with his disciples before his painful and violent death. C) As people throughout the ages have lived empowered by his life-giving Spirit help us to do likewise. PRAYER OF THE DAY Compassionate God, you have assured the human family of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Deliver us from the death of sin, and raise us to new life in your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS L) God makes all things new. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old has passed away; everything has become new! Believe the gospel: in Jesus Christ we are loved, we are blessed, we are forgiven. C) Thanks be to God! 2
SONG The Lord Will Keep You Safe And Holy Verse 1: Chorus: Verse 2: Verse 3: I lift my eyes up to the mountain, from where my help will surely come. For my help comes from the Creator, who made the earth, the stars and sun. The Lord will keep me safe and holy, the Lord s a shade when day is bright; the sun won t burn me with it s glory, nor will the moon in dark of night. The Lord will keep me from all evil with all the love I ll ever need; From this time on until forever, the Lord will know and care for me. And when the road is long and weary and if you tire beneath the sun, You join with those who share the journey; bring them home when day is done. CCLI# FIRST READING: 1Kings 17:17-24 Having offered hospitality to Elijah, a widow in Zarephath loses her son to an illness. Through prayer, Elijah restores the boy to life, and the joyful mother acknowledges that Elijah is indeed a man of God. 17 After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill; his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. 18 She then said to Elijah, "What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!" 19 But he said to her, "Give me your son." He took him from her bosom, carried him up into the upper chamber where he was lodging, and laid him on his own bed. 20 He cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?" 21 Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this child's life come into him again." 22 The LORD listened to the voice of Elijah; the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23 Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper chamber into the house, and gave him to his mother; then Elijah said, "See, your son is alive." 24 So the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth." 3
GOSPEL: Luke 7:11-17 Jesus' ministry bears witness to God's coming reign, where the lowly are shown mercy and the dead are raised. Here, Jesus ministers to a widow by raising her only son to life. 11 Soon afterwards [Jesus] went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went with him. 12 As he approached the gate of the town, a man who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. 13 When the Lord saw her, he had compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14 Then he came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, rise!" 15 The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Jesus gave him to his mother. 16 Fear seized all of them; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us!" and "God has looked favorably on his people!" 17 This word about him spread throughout Judea and all the surrounding country. PREACHING TEXT Psalm 30 1 I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lifted me up and have not let my enemies triumph over me. 2 O LORD my God, I cried out to you, and you restored me to health. 3 You brought me up, O LORD, from the dead; you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. 4 Sing praise to the LORD, all you faithful; give thanks in holy remembrance. 5 God's wrath is short; God's favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping spends the night, but joy comes in the morning. 6 While I felt secure, I said, "I shall never be disturbed. 7 You, LORD, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains." Then you hid your face, and I was filled with fear. 8 I cried to you, O LORD; I pleaded with my Lord, saying, 9 "What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? 10 Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me; O LORD, be my helper." 11 You have turned my wailing into dancing; you have put off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy. 12 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; O LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever. 4
MESSAGE: From Mourning To Dancing Pastor Jerome Evavold SONG: I Will Dance With Jesus John Ylvisaker (see insert for words and music) CONFESSION OF FAITH: THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. WORSHIP THIRD SUNDAY OF PENTECOST Raised to New Life After two suicide attempts and weeks in a psychiatric hospital, she began to come out of the fog. Her parents saw glimpses of the young woman they used to know. Progress was slow. She would improve and then regress. She got her 30-day pin from Alcoholics Anonymous. Over time, with the help of antidepressants and therapy, with the support from friends and family, she found a new life or maybe it was her old life, the one before depression and drugs. She started a new job, made new friends, and returned to college. And what about the young man? What happened to him after Jesus brought him back to life? Did he do anything useful? Did he live a life worthy of resurrection? Luke doesn t tell us. In fact, the gospel writers rarely say anything about those who have encountered Jesus. He raises a few people from the dead, heals some others, teaches many, but we learn little about how their lives were changed afterwards because the central character in every story is God acting through Jesus. Luke wants us to focus on the one who does the healing, the one who changes lives. Apart from the twelve disciples, most of the New Testament characters remain faceless and nameless. Often their stories are told in ways that cause us to think of miracles as sudden events. In our lives, when things fail to change in an instant, we think God doesn t care or has abandoned us. When change evolves over time, we credit the medical field or our own choices rather than God. But all stories of healing, of lives restored and sanity regained these are all stories of resurrection. Don t be misled by slow recovery, cyclical progress, or regression. Christ is present with the words, I say to you rise! (7:14). And we do.
