August 2013 Tidings Boonville United Methodist Church 202 Main Street, Boonville, NY ~ bumc105@hotmail.com Dear friends, Summer is moving right along! It seems only yesterday we were planning activities to celebrate the end of a school year and yet fall is right around the corner. I do not know about you, but our home is already full of back-to-school plans. My wife Kayti is preparing to enter her final year of seminary and my eldest daughter Grace is preparing for her first year as a "big kid" in kindergarten. It is an exciting time of possibility! As summer begins to wind down, one question keeps entering my mind. What "crops" are getting closer to being ready for harvest in our community? Driving down country road I see farmers' fields full of potential and I wonder about our potential. Are there places in our community where it has become time to prepare the scythe and draw in a bountiful crop and are there fields where we need to be preparing for future crops? We are the Boonville United Methodist Church and we are a church called to a mission. As the summer begins to close, I'd ask you to consider where God might be calling us in our mission. We're certainly not called to just coming to church on Sundays and giving a couple of extra dollars now and again. Why would God have helped pulled together such a wide variety of talented and wonderful people if we weren't called to a future of promise and purpose? We are called to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a world that hungers for meaning and purpose That mission calls us to the fields of our daily lives to prepare the way of the Lord. Let's do it together! In Christ's love, Invitation: Pastor Rob is looking to begin building the foundations of a midweek worship service. One of the ways that the process can begin is by simply having a time for musicians to come together and play worship music together of all different varieties. Diversity is good! As such, we will begin to be having "jam sessions" at the church to begin to build up our musical ministries beyond the organ and piano into other instruments like the guitar or the electric keyboard. If you know a musician that might like to come together, share a meal, and play some music together on a weeknight, please invite them to get a hold of Pastor Rob. The more the merrier! Our Staff: Pastor: Pastor Rob Dean Crystal Dauback Administrative Assistant Verna Rocker, Choir Director Rene Stocklosa, Organist William Effland, Custodian OFFICE HOURS: MON. - FRI. 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Pastor s Hours: MON. - WED. 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Our Worship Schedule: 8:15 - Worship 10:30 - Worship Wednesday PRAYER GROUP & BIBLE STUDY 9:30 a.m. We are on our summer schedule for the children s Sunday School. There will be no Sunday School or breakfast during June, July & August. We will meet again after Labor Day in September. The class for adults will continue to meet throughout the summer.

A Moment in Scripture by Pastor Dean "When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in the heart, I was stupid and ignorant; I was like a brute beast toward you. Nevertheless I am continually with you; you hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me with honor." Psalm 73:21-24 "There are no second chances." That's the lesson many people often receive from the world around them A young teenage girl makes a poor decision and suddenly her life is changed as she goes from child to mother. An older man goes to the doctor and learns that a lifetime of hard living has shortened his lifespan considerably. A college student studies hard for years only to fail at performing well enough on her entrance exams. Often it seems the world is determined to let chips lay where they fall, and the message is often that people need to accept the reality set for them by other people. Our relationship with God is different. We are invited by passages (such as this part of Psalm 73) that God is not a God who continually puts us down. We are loved by a God that looks beyond what appears on the surface of our lives. God sees who we are down deep and invites us to choose life, but not just any life. God invites us to live good lives. In your life you might feel alone some days, but God is there with you. God is both ready and able to be near in your time of need. The God of the Universe extends a hand to you. Will you accept that offer by the very same grace that has been extended by God towards you? A Word about New Creation Ministries It was a mistake! I am telling you that it was a mistake! I double checked the spelling and every source I had at my disposal told me that it was written "New Creations Ministry," so that's what I put on the polo shirts I ordered to wear in the office during the hot summer months... Apparently, I was mistaken. As a man of integrity, I'll own up to that error, but with one caveat. At some level, I am glad there is an "s" on all of my shirts, and I'll tell you why. Every day God is creating new things in our lives. To put it another way, God is doing plural things in our lives, and it is nice to think that we can be at work in multiple different ways as God works in our lives together as we live out our joint mission. God may have brought out one particular New Creation in our life together, but God is always about the business of renewing and revealing all kinds of new creations. Who knows what New Creation(s) God may have in store for us in the coming months and years? I don t know, but I know this: As long as we remember to love God with all of who we are and love our neighbors as ourselves, it will be a good thing. May God bless us as we go about the business of being in mission together. Upcoming Event within NCM to Keep in Prayer On August 13th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., the District's Clergy will be gathering at CenterPoint Christian Fellowship for clergy family evening apart. Please keep our sisters and brothers of the CenterPoint church in your prayers as they prepare to play host and bless the socks off of the ministers and families that labor so hard throughout our district to bring God's love and Word to people from the inner city of Utica, to the towns around Vernon, to the hills around Greig! Pray also for the clergy families of the district that they might undertake the good work of clearing their schedules so that they and their families might enjoy a time of blessing and care.

Inspirations by Betty Mc. will return next month! Thank you, Betty, for your wonderful, Spirit-filled insight! WHAT FUN WE HAD!! More than 20 volunteers and 30 children from our community came together for the Boonville United Methodist Church week-long Vacation Bible School. The week of events is volunteer-driven and is an annual event at its church. This year s theme was Beach Party. Children aged 4 and up as well as adults participated in numerous fun events and activities throughout the week. Some of the highlights of the week were the downhill slip and slide, the bible storyteller, and the fun craft projects. What makes VBS unique in addition to all the fun is that there s an emphasis on helping the kids build a spiritual foundation. Exciting special events, caring team-leaders and continual fun, make it a positive experience for all involved, said Ash Fletcher director of the Vacation Bible School. The mission this year was to gather non-perishable goods to be donated to the St. Mathews Place Food Pantry and the Boonville United Methodist Church Food Pantry. Close to 30 lbs. of food were divided between the two area food pantries. The VBS week concluded with an ice cream social, a perfect finish to a weeklong Beach Party. All are welcome and invited to VBS next year. Hello Everyone! This is an overdue THANK YOU for the lovely song you sang on June 23! Thank you also to Rene and Pastor Rob for the accompaniment. No one would ever have known that Rene first saw the music only a few days earlier! Thank you to Rene for your willingness to jump in last minute, and for adjusting the music to fit our needs that morning. And I also loved the drum. Very fitting! This is also a reminder that there is NO CHOIR or choir practice for August. This is a much needed break for everyone. If anyone would like to do a special song any time during the summer months, please feel free to give me a call or and we'll get it set for you. Solos, duets, trios, groups of any kind are always welcome. Pass the word along for anyone not a choir member. I hope I did not miss anyone. If you notice someone is not on this list who should be, please shoot me a quick and let me know. Have a blessed summer! Blessings Always, Verna or vernarocker@yahoo.com Choir practice begins soon! Watch for announcements! Health Benefits of Singing: ~Reduce stress and improve mood ~Lower blood pressure ~Boost the immune system ~Improve breathing ~Reduce perceived pain ~Improve a sense of rhythm ~Promote learning in children ~Forge comforting memories ~Promote communal bonding ~Provide comfort ~Motivate and empower And remember choir isn t just singing! If you play an instrument, perform drama/skits, etc. come join us!

When er you meet with troubles and trials your way, Oh, cast your cares on Jesus and don t forget to pray. Gird on the heavenly armor of faith and hope and love. And when the combats ended you ll reign with him above. Meditations of the Heart by Donna Hendrix Let my mouth speak the words that bring glory to your name. Let me sing your praises as did the angels when you came. Let me shout your name for all the earth to hear. Let me whisper sweet prayers that only you can hear. Let my life be an example to all those around me. Let your light shine through me for all the world to see. Let my heart and soul and mind work together for your glory. Let the workings of my life be a chapter in your story. Let my heart with your love and goodness and mercy fill. Let my mind seek to know your every will. Let the meditations of my heart be acceptable in thy sight. Let the wanderings of my mind be as angel wings in flight. Let my life be an example to all those around me. Let your light shine through me for all the world to see. Let my heart and soul and mind work together for your glory. Let the workings of my life be a chapter in your story.

Christian Bookstore Owner Plans Grand Re-Opening After Storm Elvis has NOT Left the Building On the morning of June 28, Kathy Peters, owner of Life Discovery Bookstore, pulled up in front of the Big Apple Plaza in New Hartford (where her store is located). She watched in shock as the water cascaded down the lot towards her store. The water looked hip-high, she recalled, and I thought it would be at least a full day before I could enter the building and assess the damage. However, by around 1:00 p.m. the waters had receded to around knee high and I was allowed to go in the store. The power had been cut as a safety measure so it was semi-dark and dampness hovered in the air. It was then that Peters heard the tones of a music box. She reached down in the murky water, and bringing it to the surface heard the strains of a gospel song made famous by Elvis Presley, Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light It was then, Peters said, that I knew it would be ok, that I could pick up these pieces and begin again. I didn t see how at that point, but I just knew I could. After a few days of cleaning and rebuilding by the plaza s management, Peters could envision a fresh start and a new set-up to the store she had purchased from the previous owners in February of this year. She felt compelled to ensure it remained open to serve the Mohawk Valley and surrounding regions. The store offers a large variety of Bibles, books, music and gifts, and serves both the community and its churches. Many local houses of worship purchase their communion cups, candles and other items from Peters. She says she may be carrying a bit less inventory now, but will still offer the same products. Peters places special orders 2-3 times a week so there s never a long wait to get her customers what they re looking for. The grand re-opening was a great way to thank the community for being so encouraging, says Peters. From the first day of the storm I ve received an outpouring of s and Facebook messages asking what they could do for me. We celebrate the community s resilience and support.

OTHER B.U.M.C. HAPPENINGS We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Thessalonians 1:2 For as in one body we have many members and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ and individually we are members one of another Romans 12:4 These are the two scripture verses that came to my mind last night as we drove home from the last night at the fair. What a week! I am so deeply thankful for those of you who did what needed to be done with little fuss. First of all to all the behind the scenes people who cooked, mixed sandwich product, or ran errands, you are the foundation; without you the fair food booth would not be as successful as it is. Then those of you who showed the face of Christ while working in the booth itself, I thank you. Every morning Betty, the two ladies who were the restroom attendants and I would join in prayer. One day we were joined by a Gideon representative. What a great way to start the day! I watched as several of you made little adjustments to our menu to meet the needs of young children (PB with no jelly or extra forks for sharing or cups for soda for families). Some of you saw a need to serve and carry food to tables for those who were unable in spite of how busy we were at the time. Thank you! As the week went on we got many compliments from people who said they only come to our booth when they come to the fair. Compliments about the addictiveness of our cobbler were shared and chuckled about. It was truly a team effort and I thank you for it! What we missed the most was our fearless leader, Charlene, we asked often during the week if anyone had heard from her and we can t wait to hear about her trip when she gets back. Thank you for your service, your faith in our resurrected Christ, and your hope that we at BUMC are doing our best to love and serve HIM. Prayers, Pat It s time to start praying about where the Lord is calling you to serve for the Sunday School classes. We are also in need of help during Sunday School breakfast time in the fall. If you feel led to help teach our youth about the love God has for them, call Ash Fletcher at (315) or the church office at The Basic Lay Servant Course is scheduled for Friday, August 9 th from 5:30-9:30 p.m. & Saturday, August 10 th from 8:30-2:30 p.m. Friday supper is a bring your own brown bag. Saturday morning snacks and lunch can be provided for an additional $6 per person. Registrations due ASAP and forms are available in the Narthex or by contacting the church office. (Help will be needed to provide the food for Saturday. See the sign up list for both food & manpower in the Narthex.) The $20.00 fee for this course is, as per District Lay Servant Committee, includes book and handouts. All Lay Servant courses must be a minimum of 10 hours. Storytelling will be offered in October. You can not take this course unless you have had the Basic Course. Thank You, Boonville It has been a pleasure living in Boonville, and Boonville United Methodist Church is the main reason. You are blessed to be part of this church in this community. Boonville United Methodist Church is the center of the Boonville community. That was never more evident than around the fire earlier this year. I was honored to be one of many volunteers helping our community recover from that fire. The experience began as a nightmare, quickly became a tragedy and gave God the opportunity to work through us to provide miracle after miracle for the displaced families. Boonville is unique. After moving here I was reading some of Boonville's history. I became curious about Boonville's population. I noticed the population has been 2100, give or take 10%, for over 100 years. Why? What makes people stay here? Now I know. Boonville quietly stands as one of best places to live, because of the people who live here. The care and concern for each other is amazing. Boonville is what a community should be. This is how God intended us to live together. Thank you for letting me share in the care and concern, and ultimately joy of living in Boonville. I am sorry to be moving. I will miss you all. God led me to Boonville. Now he is leading me back by my son and his children. I will always remember Boonville as a REAL community with Boonville United Methodist Church at the center. Larry Moore
