PAGE 2 Frank Runyeon Bio Frank Runyeon has won national acclaim for his work as a translator and performer of Biblical texts over the past 20 years. He has performed the gospel for hundreds of thousands of people in almost every state in America, earning rave reviews from critics, scholars, and church leaders of every denomination. He is regularly reviewed as the best speaker we have ever heard by students and faculty at private and public schools across the nation. He is perhaps still best known, however, for his many roles on television. He starred for seven years as Steve Andropoulos on As the World Turns opposite Meg Ryan, a storyline that garnered the second highest ratings in the history of daytime television. He next appeared for four years as Father Michael Donnelly on the Emmy award-winning Santa Barbara, and as tycoon Simon Romero on General Hospital, opposite Emma Samms. Frank has also guest-starred in recurring roles on L.A. LAW as talk-show host Brooks Tapman, on Falcon Crest as chess genius Jovan Dmytryk, on Melrose Place as Father Tom, and on All My Children as Forrest Williams. Frank starred as Detective Marty Lowery in the feature film Sudden Death and as Pierre Lyon in Bolero. He appeared to rave reviews on the New York stage as Hercules in Aristophanes' The Birds, and in regional theater as Clifford in Deathtrap and Oliver Costello in The Spider's Web. On the radio, he has hosted his own comedy talk show on the top-rated L.A. station, KFI, and on WCNN in Atlanta. He co-hosted Charles McPhee's nationally syndicated radio show, The Dream Doctor. (He is slated to appear as a recurring guest expert on Dr. Phil and The Doctors on CBS in ) Frank is a graduate of Princeton University with a degree in Religion. After studying acting in New York and Los Angeles for 15 years, he attended Fuller Seminary in preparation for the writing and performance of his first one-man play, AFRAID!: The Gospel of Mark. He continued his studies at Yale Divinity School and General Theological Seminary, from which he received his Masters, with honors, in l994. He workshopped his first productions in cooperation with the faculty of Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA, and the University of Dayton
Page 3 Kerygma * by Father Mark A month or so ago, one of our young people asked me, "If God and Jesus are so wonderful and awesome, why is learning about them so boring?" That is a great question that I can relate to. When I was in elementary school, church was boring. My natural curiosity in things spiritual surfaced in junior high school where my most profound spiritual growth took place with other teens as we explored the faith we had been given from the new perspective an emerging sense of self. By the time I reached high school, although I was not nearly as mature as I thought I was, my relationship with Jesus took another developmental step. I no longer believed because my parents believed. I believed because I believed and I intentionally surrounded myself with friends who believed as well. Although we went to different churches, we formed a community of disciples. We were bible and worship focused. That spiritual center remained in place for the next thirty years. A few years before my arrival at St. Mary's, God began a new work in my life. That new work has come in two phases over the past decade. I became aware that the Episcopal Church needed to become mission oriented and I became aware of the deep sense of spiritual identity that is formed through service. I've come to the conclusion that learning about God and Jesus is boring because all to often we treat God and Jesus like an object, something we can examine. Christianity is not really about propositions; it is about relationships. That is why mission trips are so important to the spiritual growth of our young people. They find value in doing service and then sharing stories about how God showed up. That's how we mature in Christ. In order to be vital, in order for the church to escape spiritual boredom, it must shape its life so that it is a place of applied Christianity. Throughout the month of October we are going to be praying about the relationship between our mission, ministry, and our budget. This spiritual exercise can be boring if we look at it objectively. However, if we approach this time of prayer and our budget as though it was our mission trip, I think that we will be amazed where God shows up. As we pray, we are going to receive information from our Stewardship Team that will disclose the fact that a substantial amount of our budget is devoted to keeping the building open. The Team will also help us see that the really important stuff takes place after we open the doors. We have some wonderful opportunities to serve our Lord. *Kerygma is a Greek word that means essential proclamation.
PAGE 4 Youth Ministry News Lloyd Honeycutt and Lori Eddlemon recently decided to take leaves of absence from youth ministry at St. Mary's. I want to thank them for their service to our young people. We are blessed to have a team of leaders who bring continuity and quality to our youth ministry. Their names might not be as familiar to you because they have been working behind the scenes. Nonetheless, they are faithful and devoted leaders. Maragret DeShazer and Nancy Powell are veterans of our youth programming, mission trips, and pilgrimages. David Youngblood participated in last summer s mission trip to Barnesville. He and Donna Griffith have been assisting with our youth for some time now. Roger Webb is our newest team member. This is a new adventure for him and we are thankful for his willingness to respond to God s call when we needed more adult sponsors so that we could keep up with the growing number of kids who are choosing to be a part of the St. Mary's experience. These people serve our kids on Wednesday nights. There is another team that serves the kids on Sunday mornings, and I want to thank Tom and Anne Byrd and Bryan and Beth Carlton for sharing their lives in Christ during YAC and Rite 13. I have every confidence in this leadership team because I know of their commitment to the spiritual development of our children. Faithfully, Father Mark+

Page 17 St. Mary s School Blessing St. Mary s Episcopal School Officially Opens Middle School Division Bishop Ed Konieczy leads Blessing for School Students surrounded the four newly constructed classrooms to be a part of the official opening and blessing of the middle school division at St. Mary s Episcopal School in Edmond. The special event, led by the Episcopal Diocese of Oklahoma Bishop, the Right Reverend Dr. Edward J. Konieczy, and Reverend Mark Story of St. Mary s Episcopal Church, welcomed the crowd and blessed each room one by one. This is an exciting opportunity to continue the Episcopal tradition of academic excellence and the outstanding enrichment opportunities that have become synonymous with St. Mary s Episcopal School, said Sarah Woods, Director of the Middle School Division. Woods added that the middle school will be taught by exceptional veteran teachers and the enrichment courses will challenge students and inspire students while they are having fun learning. Research has shown that preschool through eighth grade schools students demonstrate higher levels of achievement; have higher attendance rates; display better self esteem, leadership and attitudes toward school; and have fewer discipline problems. By expanding our school to eighth grade, we are able to complete our mission of preparing children spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically, said Nancy Hetherington, Head of School. She added that offering a continuous program for children from age three to fifteen, combines the of best of early childhood, elementary and middle school worlds and prepares students for a smooth transition to high school. St. Mary s Episcopal School, established in 1977, strives to create quality learning experiences in a nurturing and safe environment that promotes academic excellence, spiritual development, and community responsibility. St. Mary s serves pre-school aged children through fifth grade plans to add sixth through eighth grade over the next three years. The School admits students of any faith, race, color, national and ethnic origin, and extends all the rights, privileges, programs and activities to its students, and does not discriminate in any of its educational, admission or financial aid policies and programs. A 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, St. Mary s mission is to provide quality academic programs in an environment fostering respect for faith, family, others and self. Visit for more information.
PAGE 18 Thank you Notes Dear Father Mark, Anna and St. Mary s friends (to many to name!), What a wonderful surprise to see so many of you at the Character Council Award Ceremony. It meant so much to me! It seems that every month I am writing a thank you note to someone at the church and today as I write this note, I realize once again how blessed I am to be part of the St. Mary s community. These last few months I have been given honored for our work at Rolling Green both hrough the media and the wonderful character award that I received. I truly feel undeserving of all this recognition I truly appreciative your support. This ministry started with an idea and some initial work on my part but it grew because of all of your support, work, and love for this ministry. Most importantly we have made a difference in this community and I invite you to continue to share the joy of service and friendships with this wonderful community! Let s continue to share Christ s love and thanks again for your love and support dear friends! As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another John 13; Thank you
