Rev. Sue Watkins Let me begin my Annual Report by saying Thank you! It was a leap of faith for us all that I would spend July and August of 2018 on Sabbatical. We haven t spent that much time apart since I became Pastor of First Presbyterian Church on January 12, When we began to plan for this, we did not know that our church would be facing the loss of so many in our church family and extended family. In the first half of 2018, I offered memorial service for Nona Gibbons, Terry Collings, Dave Barclay, Denny Wilkie, Nancy Davison, Ron Snow, and Doris Herbert, as well as attending a memorial gathering for Larry Sandoval. George Warner and Norma Gaston passed away, and I did not provide memorial services for them, but I did come alongside their families as they grieved. You may not have known all these people, but each one was a beloved child of God, and it is always an honor to provide some measure of comfort and assurance to those who are grieving. It turns out that the timing of my Sabbatical was a Godsend. It gave me time to breathe and collect myself from such an intense season of loss, and also to look forward to what God has in mind for our future. (Shortly after I returned in September, we learned that our dear Catharine Bendtsen had also passed away. No service was held, at her request, but we miss her very much.) As we saw the passing of many who are dear to us, we also saw the joyful arrival of 5 babies! Ewan and Maya Elliott we born to Jonah and Marina Elliott on February 26th, Ellerie Rutledge was born on June 23rd to Isabella Armenta and Devin Rutledge, Noah Hale was born on July 14th to Evan and Katie Hale, and Greta Alspaugh was born to Matt and Kara Alspaugh on November 26th. We celebrate with their families! As 2017 was turning into 2018, the Session decided to pursue a congregational self-study, recognizing that such an effort hadn t taken place since prior to my arrival, and 2018 was my 16th year with you! In between, we have held some evaluation and training events, surveyed the congregation through appreciative inquiry and even adopted a new mission statement. Still, it was time for a congregation-wide process of looking at who we have been, who we are now, and where God is leading us. We engaged the help of Pastors Heather James and Dan Whitmarsh to take some initial steps, beginning with a Remember When gathering. I was on Sabbatical at the time, but I hear that many people enjoyed reminiscing about the good old days. As I read the notes from the day, I was struck with how the memories of our church were inextricably bound up with the memories of the city of Puyallup. There is a strong identification with our community here at FPC, and I think that it s a good thing. In October, about 70 of us participated in the Veritas Workshop, where we were guided through a process to discern where we are in the life-cycle of being a church. The goal of being a Healthy Missional Church was set before us. We are still processing what that means for us moving forward. I believe that we will choose one of two courses of action. We will either challenge our own comfort zone by seeking to exhibit more fully the 10 Healthy Missional Markers which were presented that day, or we won t. It would be so much easier to continue with business as usual, but I hope and pray that we accept this challenge. 2

Also in October, we experimented with our worship service on World Communion Sunday. Did you love it! Some did. Was it not so comfortable for you? This was true for others. Everything we try is going to inspire some to say, Can we do that again? and others to say, Never again! (Please keep that in mind whether you loved or hated a new thing.) What you may not know is that it was a whole lot more work than communion as usual. We spent hours planning and preparing. Everything from setting up the chairs, to adorning the table with fabrics from around the world, to the baking of breads required extra effort. Our musicians prepared differently. I preached differently. Offering was collected differently. And I thought that it was all worth it for what Wilson McKnight refers to as Bread Sunday. This is a small window into what it might mean to live into being a Healthy Missional Church: more work, less predictable, inspiring, unsettling, leaving us exhausted and energized all at the same time! All of it meant to lead us into heartfelt worship as 1) We exalt and celebrate God for who he is, what he has done, what he is doing, and what he will do, 2) It reflects careful preparation to help give voice to many dimensions of response to God such as adoration, praise, contrition, lament and commitment, and 3) We leave worship knowing something more about the heart of God and our own hearts. By the way, this definition of Heartfelt Worship is one of the 10 Healthy Missional Markers. As we begin to move into 2019, I will do my very best to provide effective leadership during this season of discernment. I covet your continued prayers for the year ahead. Pray with me that God, as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, will be ever present with us and that we will be fully present with him!... Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in one triune God whom alone we worship and serve...with believers in every time and place we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. 4 Lizzie Owen, Children s Ministry Coordinator In 2018, our children spent time raising money for Soundview Camp. They participated in a root beer float stand after church and a Walk-A-Thon at Aylen Jr. High School. The campers got a jump start in the Fall for 2019 camp by hosting a bake sale after the Christmas Pageant and also sold Christmas wreaths! We were able to send 13 kids to Soundview Camp last July and anticipate more in 2019! Thank you to all who helped make camp possible for the kids! VBS this year was held June 25-29th. The theme was Shipwrecked! We had 71 participants from ages 3-6 th grade. We also had 31 total volunteers by the end of the week. We are hoping for the similar numbers of participants and volunteers in The theme is called Miraculous Mission! Get your spacesuits and rocket ships ready! The countdown to June starts now! Thank you to those who volunteered your time and all our donations! VBS would not be possible without you! Sunday School continues to be a success. We had 2 classes this year. Preschool- Kindergarten and 1 st -6 th grade! Jan Blanchard and Joe Harrison do a tremendous job leading the classes! CORE continued to be held every month on the 1 st, 3 rd, and 5 th Wednesday every month. We are seeing an average of 12 kids every time we meet! Thank you to Heather Toomey, Morgen Asher, Lacey Boots, and Nico Diaz, for volunteering your time this fall and Steven Briskey and Daniel Toomey for your help in the Winter and Spring of 2018! We held our first annual Happy Birthday Jesus Party on Christmas Eve in 2018! It was well attended with about 13 kid and their families, as well as a few young-at-heart attendees. The party consisted of games, stories, crafts, and birthday cake! We hope to continue to grow this event as the years go on! Middle School Youth Group First Presbyterian Church of Puyallup began a Middle School Youth Group in October of It is designed for 6 th -8 th grade. We meet twice a month (the 1 st and 3 rd Tuesdays) from 6:30-8:00 PM. Our group has between 2-6 kids each meeting. Our goal is to combine spiritual learning and growth with fun, service work, and personal relationships with God. During October and November the group went shopping and put together 19 boxes for Operation Christmas Child and also learned how God made them each in his own design and how to use the talents and strengths God gave them to excel in school and life. We finished off 2018 with a Christmas Party! 4

Julie Giltner and Laurie Peil (Ruling Elders) Morgen Asher, Lizzie Owen, Carol Moon Be shepherds of God s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be... and eager to serve. 1 Peter 5:2 Our Commission is small, but our God is huge and together we accomplished great things in 2018! We held Graduation breakfast on June 10th where we honored Cy Hanson, Blake Roscoe, Daniel Toomey, Ian Sinner and their families. A very successful vacation bible school, Shipwrecked: Rescued by Jesus, was held June Our youth, under the guidance of Joe Harrison (volunteer) and Hannah Webber (paid, very part-time through June) have grown spiritually through service. They have assisted at the Food bank, served meals at Tacoma Rescue Mission and travelled with Joe, Marj and several adult volunteers July to Miami Florida where they served the community (including sorting thousands of mismatched shoes at a clothing bank!) and stayed at the First Presbyterian Church in the heart of Miami where they enjoyed the support of the congregation including Pastor Chris Atwood. We supported Sound View Camp by sending 13 of our children to attend camp July 22-28! This summer we also saw our nursery get a facelift as the entire room was painted and new carpet was installed. Several members of our congregation helped to paint the room August and the carpet was installed on June 17! We are very grateful to all of those who assisted with this project including the Facilities commission. Fall found our Commission busy supporting Sunday school, CORE, Middle school youth group (new this fall as we added 10 hours/week to Lizzie Owen s contract), High school youth group and preparing for our Christmas pageant, Sing a Song of Christmas, which was presented to the congregation on Sunday, December 9. Ed and Betty Zeiger continue to lead the very well attended Adult Education Sunday school class in the parlor we are so thankful for their faithful service. Adults also had several opportunities to grow in their faith with classes presented by the Neighborhood Spirit Commission in August led by Pastor Nicole McKnight as well as an Advent Series led by Pastor Sue in December. We are thankful that although we are a small commission, we are able to accomplish great things with God's help and the support of a faithful church community! 6

Peggy Burrough (Ruling Elder); Mary Briskey (Ruling Elder); Shirley Ashburn, Karri Wicka, Pat Davies This annual report is dedicated to our dear friend In Christ, Nancy Davison. She was a loving servant for our congregation and we miss her deeply. Fellowship Time is an important time when members and friends can become better acquainted. We appreciate the willingness of members to help with this important service. The Congregational Life Commission, though small but very active, furnished many opportunities for members and friends of our congregation to gather for food and fellowship. Every Sunday following the worship service, coffee, tea, juice and refreshments were served in the church s Fellowship Hall. The selection of cookies, fruit, cheese, crackers, and special treats were provided by other commissions, Presbyterian Women, Deacons and several individuals or families. Special fellowship events were provided for or hosted by our commission. * The All-Church lunch prior to the Annual Meeting (Our commission provided the chicken along with the member s salads and desserts * Maundy Thursday Soup Supper and Hot Cross Buns for Easter Sunday *An occasional and ever-popular Popcorn Sunday *A Farewell Reception for Andy Maurice, our organist, before he left for Guam with his family *The celebration of Grandparents along with their grandchildren on Grandparents Day In mid-august, the Annual All-Church Picnic was held at Bradley Park following the worship service. More than 45 adults and children enjoyed the event. As in other years, our commission organized activities in the community such as attending productions at the Mane Stage Theater at The Liberty in Puyallup followed by dinner. The Tacoma Rainiers baseball team at Cheney Stadium were cheered on by members of our congregation. Plans have been made for the 2019 church calendar: All-Church Campout at Camp Lakeview on August 30 and 31 All-Church Picnic at Bradley Park on July 21. Discussion with Pastor Sue is being held on the possibility of having our church service that morning in the Bradley Lake shelter. We monitor and purchase supplies, including coffee and other beverages and all disposables for serving. Those of us listed above are privileged to provide fellowship opportunities for our church members, but we are in need of other folks who would commit to service on the Congregational Life Commission. 7

We would like to acknowledge the exemplary work of our custodian, Diane Gibbons! Her attention to detail and knowledge of our building keeps FPC in good working order. 8

Lynn Elam (Ruling Elder) Jan Morgan, Ed Zeiger, Harry Grist As I reflect on the mission activity of our church, the more I see it s not so much what we on the Mission Commission do as how our congregation responds to both familiar and new ways to reach out to share Christ s Love. Did you realize that FPC Puyallup contributes financially to nine different ministries? We help with Freezing Nights for the homeless, prepare weekend food sacks for preschoolers from low income families, support Rafiki orphan school/villages in ten different African countries, participate in the Puyallup Armory Hot Meals program, and contribute to Operation Christmas Child. All but one of these ministries require regular hands-on involvement of the members of our congregation. (You guessed correctly, Africa gets irregular hands-on involvement). In addition, you contribute to food banks and special denominational offerings: One Great Hour of Sharing, Christmas Joy, and Pentecost. A couple of years ago, our Presbytery began offering $500 grants to Presbytery churches to help them develop programs to alleviate hunger. We applied for a grant that would help us increase the amount of protein in the weekend food sacks we prepare for the preschool students who attend the Bates Early Learning Program in our building. We received one of the grants, enabling us to include tuna in each sack. The money for the grants comes from the 2 Cents a Meal contributions collected in churches. We started our own 2 Cents a Meal collection in May of 2018 and raised $200 for the program by year s end. More than a dozen adults and children from FPC Puyallup participated in the Emergency Food Network-Associated Ministries Hunger Walk. They and their Virtual Walker sponsors raised money for area food banks. The apostle Paul wrote that God loves a cheerful giver. You are not only cheerful givers but also cheerful workers. Thanks to Jan Morgan for providing the following figures: Freezing Nights served 348 guests from November 2017 through March Armory meals were served in We sent off 72 boxes for Operation Christmas Child. We had 11 walkers participate in the Hunger Walk and $720 was raised. We gave Bridges of Love $500 for families that needed help to pay utility bills weekend food sacks were prepared for preschoolers from September through June Special Offerings: One Great Hour of Sharing -$615; Pentecost -$798; Christmas Joy -$

Elders: ErrolLynne Marsh and Pat Walton Commission Members: Jan Blanchard, Ray Coleman, Pat Davies and Kathy Spence As a church, Session and commission, we are growing in our understanding of what it means to be missional individuals and a missional church. During Neighborhood Spirit Commission s first year (2017) we concentrated on the missional individual. We used monthly challenges and studies which were designed to encourage individuals to interact with their neighbors and to learn more about missional concepts. The experiences of our first year helped the commission to clarify a new set of challenges for During this year, Neighborhood Spirit Commission expanded the focus on missional concepts to include both the individual and their neighbors and our church and its neighbors. Missional individuals interact with and listen to their neighbors. Missional churches interact within the church s community actively working to understand where and how it can participate. The missional church interacts with, helps and supports its church neighbors. Many neighbors are people who have a different heritage or background. To truly interact with our neighbors and church neighbors, we need to listen to them and understand their lives. Then, look to see where we can support, help, and grow together. This year the Commission presented opportunities to develop skills to do this. To develop skills in listening, we sponsored a workshop led by Pastor Nicole McKnight. Behind Hearing was open to anyone in any of our Pioneer Neighbor churches. People from each of the churches met weekly to learn how to really listen to, actually hear and support others. Friendships were made and skills practiced and learned. To develop skills in understanding and relating with all neighbors, we took up the challenge from the 222 nd GA. The co-moderators of the 222 nd General Assembly encouraged all Presbyterians to read together and study Debby Irving s book, Waking Up White. Pastor Sue Watkins and Elder ErrolLynne Marsh facilitated a several month long study of this book. Some people read it on their own, others joined in regular discussions. Additionally, Pastor Sue Watkins and several others attended a workshop at Seattle Pacific University which focused on churches understanding the relation between missional churches and people with differing races and backgrounds. Another group attended a dinner and presentation at Mt. View Lutheran Church to learn about Muslim beliefs and life-styles. Those attending some or all these growth opportunities, have reported they were surprised by some facts and now have a desire to dig deeper and know even more about others! There will be more opportunities in 2019! One of our commission s initial projects had been put on hold due to finances. The Watkins, Hermann and Gibbons families took this project into their own hands and made it happen! They purchased, painted and installed The TURQUOISE TABLE in the church yard along Pioneer Avenue. We could not be more pleased with this initiative and the resulting table. It is used often and has afforded many opportunities to interact with neighbors passing by our church! 14

During the summer months, we sponsored two sermon series and related studies. Pastor Nicole McKnight presented five weeks of sermon lessons based on Michael Frost s book, Surprise the World: The Five Habits of Highly Missional People. She helped us to understand about BELLS (Bless, Eat, Listen, Learn and Sent). Sermon lessons, homework and sharing opportunities were enjoyed by many during the summer. Pastor Nicole followed that up with a four-week set of sermons and workshops based on Gary Neal Hansen s book, Kneeling With Giants: Learning to Pray with History s Best Teachers. Sunday sermon lessons were followed by Thursday workshops to dig deeper into understanding and using daily prayer. We were surprised by quality and quantity of resources for prayer help available to us! Our efforts have been recognized by the community. In the fall we were invited to join with March Gladness, a group of young people in the Puyallup Schools, to visit Brookdale for an afternoon of cookies, cider and social interaction. We had fun making cookies during the visit. The Neighborhood Spirit Commission s work is exciting. As members, we feel guided by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and we are learning to take chances based on that inspiration. We invite you to join us. Ask any of us about how to be a part of this commission. Join in our activities. Study with us. We have many growth activities planned for 2019! Your help and support will be valued greatly. FPC Reps: Jill Foster and Christine Howard It was so rewarding to be a part of this group this year. The Holy Spirit touched all of us working through many local churches in reaching out to our community to offer activities for all. Here are just a few of the accomplishments for 2018: The ability to share what was going on at our church with other local churches; we meet on a regular basis to catch up on the activities that are happening in our neighborhood congregations. Puyallup United Methodist Held a Mom and Me Clinic Christ Episcopal Church - Mother Earth Farm & Pet Blessing Peach Lutheran - Global Refugee Crisis learning session The Summer Lunch program was a huge success; many local families in need received food during the summer months. There were concerts, Holiday bazaars, a Strawberry Feed, the laundry ministry and the all Church Picnic just to name a few. We look forward to see where the Holy Spirit guides us this next year. 15

Laurie Peil (Moderator) Gert Williams (Vice-Moderator) Annette Kenyon & Myrna Laycock (Recording Secretaries) LaVon Golliet (Treasurer) Presbyterian Women meet regularly at First Presbyterian Church. The first Monday of some months is our Gathering which includes lunch and a program. Monthly Circle meetings include Bible Study and business meetings. We currently have 3 circles that meet each month. Two meet during the day (on the third Wednesday and third Thursday), with the third circle meeting on the second Monday in the evening. This last year we had Gatherings in February and April. Our Spring Luncheon was blessed with Marge Harrison s choir performing for us. June was the Installation of officers for the next year. We had an October Gathering in the fall. In December we had our Christmas Tea and were blessed by the performance of the Norselanders. We also collected approximately $664 in donations to the scholarship fund. Last summer was the Churchwide Gathering in Louisville, Kentucky. We had two ladies who attended, Karri Wicka and Laurie Peil. The theme was Arise, shine, your light has come! Karri and Laurie reported at our October Gathering that they had a fabulous time. The next three bible studies were presented and all look exciting. Laurie and Karri also attended several workshops and attended the plenary sessions. This year s Horizon s Bible Study is called God s Promise: I Am With You. This study is a journey through scripture, tracing the repetition of God s most frequent promise. The focus is not on the manifestations of God s presence the tabernacle, the ark of the covenant, the manna, the temple but, rather on the actual speaking of the promise. These words are spoken to individuals and communities from the time of the patriarchs to the prophets; from the judges to the kings; before, during, and after the exile; into the New Testament and beyond; to the end of the age. A special thank you goes out to Pastor Sue, Darice Hermann, Diane Gibbons and the church men who support, help and encourage the work of Presbyterian Women. Forgiven and freed by God in Jesus Christ, And empowered by the Holy Spirit, we commit ourselves: To nurture our faith through prayer and Bible study To support the mission of the church world wide To work for justice and peace To build an inclusive, caring community of women that strengthens the Presbyterian Church (USA) and witnesses to the promise of God s Kingdom. 18

This year programs included travelogues by Galen Stark and Lynn Arthur and John and Alice Dowie. Educational programs were presented by Tacoma Glass Museum, Safe Aging by John and Joyce Miller, and New Beginnings by Ray Coleman. For fun and fellowship; there was a game night, a picnic, a Neighborhood Spirit celebration and a Christmas song fest. In 2018 we did not have any baptisms or add any new members to First Presbyterian Church. 20

Our goal is to provide an efficient and accurate financial service which allows our Commissions to use our monetary gifts to glorify God. We are continuing to explore ways to make improvements. This year we took advantage of the on-line check reader option which allows us to make check deposits during non-banking hours and to simplify record keeping. The team includes: Bookkeeper: Lisa Jones is a contract employee who provides the experience, knowledge, and technical skills needed to manage our various accounts. Lisa makes the ledger entries, processes checks and insures we are in compliance with government regulations. Financial Secretary: Christine Howard receives and enters pledges, maintains giving records and prepares annual contribution statements for each giving unit for tax filing purposes. Christine may be contacted at: financialsecretary@fpcpuyallup.org. Tellers: Volunteers, Barbara Brady, Jane Carden, Sue Johnson, Donna Sinner and Mary Ellen Sparks, counted and recorded the weekly offering and other income and make the bank deposits throughout most of the year. Mary Ellen also managed the Endowment Fund Accounts and maintained those records. We thank them for their years of dedicated service. In 2019, Barbara Brady will lead the Teller Team assisted by Jane Carden, ErrolLynne Marsh and Maxine Schwinn. Treasurer: Arthalyn Blank provides the Session and Commissions with monthly accounting and budget reports, produces ledger reports for the Deacons, Presbyterian Women, Supper Club and other fund accounts, reviews expenditures, and signs the checks. Arthalyn may be contacted at: treasurer@fpcpuyallup.org. Striving to be good and faithful stewards, we use a Session approved balanced budget to guide us through each year. Many people work to insure it is accurate, reasonable and faith centered. The budget is published and available to all members. Copies of the line item budget are located in the office if you are interested in the details. The largest expense is our payroll. FPC s hardworking staff is paid monthly using a payroll service to insure accuracy in our payroll and tax payments. The Commissions manage the rest of the budget. Although some program and personnel changes were made during the year that altered the distribution of funds by some Commissions, the total expenditures for 2018 were under budget. Most of our income is from pledges made by members and friends of the church. Your faithful and consistent giving allows us to meet our program needs. Thanks to your generosity, the year ended on a very positive financial note. Offerings and donations plus our rental income produced a total income greater than the 2018 budget projection resulting in a year-end budget surplus. This was accomplished in addition to the 2012 Capital Campaign loan being repaid in full! 22
