1 Highlights from Trinity United Methodist Church From the Pastor's Pen... Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? (Isaiah 43: 19ab) God occasionally gives us gifts of new things. But they can only be new if we will receive them as such. If we carry the same old attitudes, approaches, fears and hatreds, we can refuse to perceive the new things God wants to do for us and through us. As we approach 2018, let s perceive (look for) the new thing(s) God is doing among us and pray God s richest blessing on the ministry of Trinity UM Church in this NEW Year! Please also pass along my thanks to our congregation as well. The many cards, well wishes, and the pretty blanket were all very kind and helped me in my recovery. 5 Page 5 Youth Ministry & Fellowship January 2018 Happy New Year!! I hope that 2018 is as exciting for you as 2017 was for our youth. We hosted our 3rd Christmas Morning Breakfast and Clothing and Toy Distribution. We would like to thank all of you for your donations. Because of your generosity, we were able to make Christmas a little brighter for some families in our community. As we ended 2017, our youth were extremely busy and piling up many awards and special recognitions. It is time to TIP OUR HATS to these fine young men and women who make our church and our community so much better. Here s to: Jacob Bush - who competed in indoor track for Calvert High School and ran the 1600 meter race. He is already running faster than his goal for the season. Jacob was also selected to participate in the All County Chorus. Joshua Bush - Joshua was selected to play in the Towson Honors Band and he recently received the Star Rank and 2nd Eagle Scout Merit Badge in Scouting. Nicole Curran - was the recent recipient of the Captain s Choice Award for her efforts with the Calvert High School indoor track team. Nicole and her sister, Amanda, participated in the shot put event for the Track Team. (Continued on page 6)
6 Page 6 (Continued from page 5) Peyton Kimmel - At the end of the Varsity Football Season at Calvert High School, Peyton was recognized in several ways. He was named to the first team all conference team for the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. He also received the offensive linemen of the year award and student athlete of the year for his GPA of 4.67!! Our youth have some very impressive things to put on their resumes. We are very proud of all they are able to participate in and excel in at school, at church and in the community. On December 14th, Pastor Jim and I were privileged to attend the Winter Chorus Concert at Calvert High School. What an impressive program and boy did our Youth shine!! The following students participated in the Concert: Jacob Bush, Jack Green, Will Green, David Big Red Johnson, Andrew Mason, Michael Mason and Kelly Shannon. They made Trinity proud. Soloists for the evening were: Jacob Bush, Jack Green, David Big Red Johnson, Andrew Mason and Michael Mason. Andrew and Michael Mason also sang a duet. Along with participating in the Concert, several of the members were recognized for their abilities. Jacob Bush, Jack Green and Andrew Mason qualified for All County Chorus. Jack Green and Andrew Mason also qualified for the Tri - County Chorus. Although he has not been part of our youth group, I would like to recognize John Levin for his participation in the chorus concert. John even had a solo during the performance. (Continued on page 7)
7 Page 7 (Continued from page 6) Now, add 14 more youth to this group and you have a Christmas Caroling group that sound awesome together!! We took them on tour to the Calvert Pines Senior Center to sing at their two buildings and were very well received. In fact, they were asked to come back next year!! Then, we went to pay a surprise visit to Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Fowler. We really enjoyed surprising them and we were very warmly welcomed. I am always looking forward to watching how God works in these young lives and very proud to have them at Trinity, in youth group and in my life. Keep watching for more of their accomplishments!! In Christ, Janet Swecker firstladyjanet@gmail.com

9 Page 9 Extraordinary Giving Recently, as a congregation, we just considered our giving for Consecration Sunday was held and commitments for this new year were provided. This is typically giving from regular income and something in which we can plan and forecast. What about the extraordinary times in our life? What about the times in which we can do something extraordinary? The church can be considered here, as well. Whether it is receiving an inheritance, selling an asset, tax planning and preparation, or planning for our estate, the church can be a beneficiary of an extraordinary gift. As Christians, we know that all of our earthly possessions are a gift from God. Therefore, we should make provisions to continue Christian stewardship in the ordinary and extraordinary times. Trinity has a means of assisting with this through its Foundation Committee. It is simply initiated by a call to the church office. If you want to make an extraordinary gift or remember the church in your will, you can trust that whatever you offer as a gift will be blessed many times over by the Lord in building His Kingdom. God Bless, TUMC Foundation Committee
