A Year for Making Peace THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH Fall 2018 Programs

A Vision of Christian Formation at Binkley C hristian Formation at Binkley Memorial Baptist Church strives to create a variety of sacred spaces in which all people feel welcome and can nurture their spiritual lives no matter where they are on their journey. Our church programs flow from this desire to love God, each other, and our neighbors. We explore Biblical narratives and Christian theology, and we ground ourselves in the traditions of Church. We celebrate God through a variety of forms of music. We foster discussion and encourage action in areas of peace and justice as we strive to be a covenantal community inspired by Christ's example. We trust that all of the components of Binkley's Christian Formation program lead to sound character formation for members of this faith community. We create safe spaces to question, to explore spiritual practices in Christianity and other faith traditions, and to challenge ourselves toward spiritual growth. We provide support for our teachers and intergenerational relationships/ mentorships. We foster community, faithful public leadership, social service opportunities, and the pursuit of one s spiritual vocation. We provide opportunities for all people to experience God s love within ourselves, in community and in nature. The mission of Binkley Baptist Church is building compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the way of Jesus. 2

Children in Worship W e celebrate the many ways children participate in Binkley worship: serving as acolytes during the school year; singing in worship (see page 12); leading as liturgists, and participating in Worship with Children. Each Fall, Binkley presents Bibles to 2nd graders. Children are also blessed and dedicated as infants and are welcomed to participate in worship as part of a larger intergenerational community. WORSHIP WITH CHILDREN On the third Sunday of every month, children are invited to follow their leaders to the Chapel before the sermon. There they will hear stories, learn about worship, and participate in a quiet hands on activity. Parents and caregivers are welcome any time! NURSERY Childcare is provided on Sunday mornings year round for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers by qualified caregivers. Heather McCuiston is the Nursery Coordinator. SERVICE PROJECTS Elementary age children are involved in service projects in the fall and spring, such as creating Welcome Bags for children residing at a local shelter. Children may also give an offering at VBS, church school, or worship, and may bring non perishable food to the narthex. 5

The Youth Ministry at Binkley is composed of 6 th through 12 th graders and their adult leaders. The focus of youth group is aimed at allowing young people to explore their relationship with God and God s creation. We lift up hospitality, compassion, service and courtesy as important practices of our faith. We strive to have fun as we develop lifelong relationships and build lasting memories. 7 Adult Ministry Sunday School Christian formation for adults is an important part of nurturing our faith and spiritual lives. Sunday School for adults meets from 9:30 10:30 am. Parents are asked to pick up their children at 10:30; listen for the gentle reminder bell! Fall 2018 Adult Sunday School Class Offerings Taste and see! Fall 2018 begins with wonderful options for learning, listening within and with others, and deepening faith for action. The hard part will be choosing. On Launch Sunday, September 9, come and hear the teacher or one of the facilitators describe class plans. The Bible and the New York Times Sunroom Theologian Karl Barth famously said that Christians should possess with one hand the Bible and in the other a newspaper if one is to faithfully live out the faith in one s culture. Take a look at Olin Binkley s portrait outside the sanctuary (he s holding Time magazine!). Join us for lively discussion that specifically addresses the intersection of faith and life, Scripture and the critical issues, the Divine challenge and our human responses. Sources for this decidedly conversational class will include newspaper editorials (not just from the NYT) as well as magazine articles from Sojourners and the Christian Century. Marcus McFaul will facilitate in September. Continued on next page 7

Finding Myself on a Journey Chapel This class approaches Bible study as a way of exploring some of the questions, intuitions, even distresses that arise, and persist, on our pilgrim journeys. The class, facilitated by Meredith Bratcher, uses Bible based experiential learning, but discoveries in this class are for each one their own, perhaps unpredictable, sometimes not even spoken aloud, always trustworthy. Questions, art work, journaling, or silent meditation help engage the texts, which are the lectionary Gospel readings assigned for each Sunday. It s Not Just One Way Room 17 Whether you are a new member or a member of many years, you may not know the personal faith journey of your neighbors at Binkley. Each week in this class, an individual or couple shares their story. These stories are shared with loving respect for each one s relationships with God, the Universe, Higher Power, or however her or his connection to the More is understood. Cate Alexander, Tracy Berger, and Joel & Lucy Vander Kamp share in facilitating. Mindful Parenting Lounge Each week, the group discusses ideas about parenting from current resources. The simple format includes the following: prayer, brief check in, summary of the book or article being shared, and a discussion on prepared questions. We welcome novice and experienced parents alike looking to share laughter, support, and hope in the journey of parenting. Megan and Miles Highsmith are the co facilitators. English as a Second Language Room 18 This class is designed for those learning English as a second language and interested in faith. Participants will learn vocabulary, stories from the Bible, Christian traditions, as well as share from their own cultures and histories in lively discussion. Bo Lloyd is the teacher. 8

More Adult Education Opportunities Kerygma Bible Study led by Senior Minister Dr. Marcus McFaul, is a Tuesday night opportunity starting on September 25 from 7 8:30 pm in the Lounge. This 8 week study is on The Gospel of Mark. Workbook cost is $21 to be paid at the first class. Please sign up for the class by September 20 by ing Marcus or calling the office From Kerygma.com: The portrait of Jesus we find in Mark is one of a powerful man, confident of his choices, but thoroughly trusting in God even as he faces persecution and ultimately death. Those who struggle in their discipleship are comforted to read in Mark's gospel how even Jesus' followers so often fail to understand the depth and breadth of Jesus' power and authority. Mark's words are an encouragement to uncertain disciples of all the ages to see clearly the path Jesus invites us to follow. Welcome to Binkley! Inquirer s Class Led by Marcus Sundays, Oct :45 am, Library Kerygma Study Led by Marcus Tuesdays, 7 pm Beginning Sept. 25 An Inquirer s Class Opportunity for those interested in learning about the mission and ministries of our church. 10 (Fall, Winter, Spring we take a break in the summer) Wednesday night dinners provide a casual time when we can enjoy fellowship with each other during an evening meal offered at a minimal cost, catch up on our celebrations and concerns, and learn about upcoming events. Our mid-week fellowship offers an open place to voice prayer concerns and celebrate joys, and an opportunity to engage our hearts and minds together as we seek to be the people of God in our place and time. We begin at 5:30pm in the Lounge with a meal that allows valuable time to visit. The dinner is followed by a program time that concludes at 7:00pm. Choir rehearsals for children are also held at 6:00pm, allowing ample time for children to eat before departing. Program topics vary and typically include social justice issues, theology or spirituality, matters of concern to our church family, poetry & art, immigration, environmental justice, and activities for fun and self-improvement. Wednesday nights are the best time to get to know Binkley people, so we encourage everyone, new friends and old, and especially newcomers, to join us. 11 THE MINISTRY OF MUSIC Dear Binkley, It is my great honor and privilege to have been called to serve as Binkley s Interim Minister of Music and Organist. Having been involved in church music ministry for 25 years, I possess a wealth and understanding of church music across many different denominations, current worship styles and trends, working with both volunteers and professionals, leadership of both large and small music ministry programs for children, youth, and adults, in addition to being an accomplished accompanist, choir and instrumental conductor. I look forward to serving alongside the Binkley church staff and the many things that God is going to do in and through us. I would like to encourage you and your families to consider joining one of the many music opportunities that Binkley has to offer. I believe you will find many things being involved in Binkley s Music Ministry including: musical training for those with little, some, or lots of musical experience; the deepening of your own personal faith; a smaller community within Binkley that will love, care, and embrace you; and a sense of personal fulfillment in knowing that you are helping to serve your church. We cannot do it without you and we are always welcoming of new members. Again, I am greatly honored to be a part of Binkley and please know that I am here to serve you. If there is any thing that I can do for you, please do not hesitate in contacting me. Grace and Peace, Josh Dumbleton, Interim Minister of Music and Organist josh@binkleychurch.org 11

THE CHANCEL CHOIR Chancel Choir consists of approximately 50 adult singers, college age or older, forming the backbone of the church s music program. Many have musical backgrounds, and all exhibit a deep commitment to the ministry of music and worship in this church. Extensive musical training is not a prerequisite. If you can hear and hit a pitch, you can sing at Binkley Baptist Church. Because of the extensive amount of material covered in a reasonably brief rehearsal time, the ability to read music is helpful though not required. Rehearsals are Wednesday nights, 7:30 9:00 pm, in the Choir Room. CHILDREN S CHOIR Binkley Church welcomes children in the community to participate in our music ministry. Children first-fifth grade are invited to register for choir, which includes weekly rehearsals and monthly choir performances in our Sunday worship services. Aspiring choristers should have a willingness to learn how to sing properly, a desire to make new friends in a large group, and ability to show reverence which providing and important role in worship, and a positive attitude. We meet on Wednesdays during the school year, 6-7 pm, in Room 15. Prior demonstration of singing skills is not required. 12

YOUTH CHOIR Youth Choir is a musical community for grades 6 12 which offers friendship and acceptance among each other while using their various gifts of music to offer praise and proclaim the good news of God. The choir enjoys singing a wide variety of music including classical, folk hymns, spirituals, gospel, and music which the youth have enjoyed at Baptist Youth Camp. Members of the Youth Choir receive training that will enhance their appreciation of great choral music and its application to and relevance in worship.. Rehearsals are Sunday evenings, 5:00 6:00 pm in the Choir Room. This group sings in worship monthly. BELL CHOIR Bell Choir is a group of ringers that plays at regular and special services throughout the year. A commitment to weekly rehearsals and basic music reading skills are necessary. Bell playing technique is part of this ensemble. The group is open to all high schoolers and adults. Bell Choir rehearsals will resume in October. Rehearsal date and time TBD. THE OLD TIME GOSPEL BAND The Old Time Gospel Band is a convivial group of musicians, middle school age and above, who have a love of Old Time and Gospel music. The group helps lead us in worship approximately every six weeks.. Rehearsals, 2nd and 4th Sunday mornings, 9:30 10:15 am, Choir Room. 13

Sunday, September 23 - Friday, November 2 Honoring Our Past Building Our Future Please mark your calendar with all the events planned for our 60th Anniversary Celebration. The six weeks of celebration start on Sunday 23 September with Rev. Lauren Efird of Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary, as our guest speaker during the morning worship service. Following the Sunday morning service, the hospitality committee has organized a 60 th Anniversary Celebration Party. During each of the six celebratory Sunday morning services, we will recognize church members who have joined Binkley during each of the decades and highlighting the important events that occurred during that 10 year period. Two or three representatives from each decade have been asked to briefly speak about those highlights during service. For each such decade, the Binkley members who joined during that 10 year period will be invited to sit together near the front of the sanctuary. A Timeline Committee has produced a booklet with many highlights of Binkley s history as well as an overview of our leadership, how we worship, where we worship, how we serve, and our current affiliations. In addition to the booklet, a graphic timeline will be displayed in the Narthex. Binkley Baptist Church A Story of Courage will document more than 30 events of historical significance in the courageous history of Binkley. The Banner Committee will unveil is the latest banner to celebrate our theme of Honoring Our Past...Building Our Future 14 On several Wednesday evenings during the six weeks, there will be stories shared with the congregation by longtime members of the congregation. These will be reflections on our past told from a very personal perspective in the form of conversations led by Stephanie Ford. On Sunday morning, September 30 there will be displayed a collection of angels in the Chapel. Plan to arrive early or stay after the morning service to see this inspiring collection Saturday 27 October will feature the Community Fall Festival in the afternoon. From 6:00 8:00 PM our church family will participate in a celebration dinner of historic Brunswick Stew by Charles Carver and family, entertainment and fellowship. The final event of the 60 th Anniversary Celebration will be a history play of Binkley Baptist Church. The play was created by Lyman Ferrell and will be presented on Friday evening, the 2 nd of November. More details to follow. Running throughout the celebration will be an opportunity to sign up for participation in the church s service project of helping to build a Habitat for Humanity home. Linda Textoris is spearheading the organizing of volunteers for this project. And don t forget the Pre 60 th Anniversary "Swing into the 60th Anniversary Binkley Golf Open.
