CHANCEL CHOIR: The Chancel Choir will begin rehearsal on Wednesday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Please join us at 9:15 a.m. for snacks. We have really fun games and activities planned for Rally Day! We can t wait to see you all! Sunday School will begin every Sunday at 9:15 a.m. Fields of Dreams Uganda Presentation: On Sunday, September 9th, immediately following the worship service, there will be a presentation by Judi and Aaron Knipmeyer about their recent trip to Uganda. A free, light lunch will be served. Certainly, all church members are welcome, but please feel free to invite any friends and family who might be interested to both the lunch and program. 6 Youth Choir, Little Notes, and Chime Bell Choir The Youth Choir will begin rehearsals on Sunday, September 16 from 8:45-9:15 a.m. in the sanctuary. They will sing during the 10:30 worship service on the 1 st and 3 rd Sundays of each month. Little Notes and Chime Bell Choir will also begin rehearsing this same day from 9:15-9:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. They will play and sing during the 10:30 worship service on the 3 rd Sunday of each month. Come join the music fun! See you there! NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF ELDERS FESTIVAL OF SHARING 2018: This year the Board of Elders have chosen two projects members of Salem can contribute to for Festival of Sharing, they are Missouri Paper Product Pack and Missouri Personal Hygiene Pack. Please consider donating any of the many items involved with these packets or a monetary donation is also accepted (an envelope is enclosed in the September Lamplighter.). An article with all the items listed is in the Lamplighter. A container has been placed in the back of the Sanctuary to collect your items. 7 NEWS FROM THE HIGGINSVILLE MINISTERIAL FELLOWSHIP: On Sunday, September 9, area churches will be taking up a combined Offering for the Emergency Fund operated by the Ministerial Fellowship of Higginsville. This fund gives financial assistance to families in the area of the C-1 School District in cases of emergency. It also assists needy itinerants passing through our area with fuel, food, and sometimes overnight accommodations. Special Offering Envelopes from the Ministerial Fellowship are available in the back of the sanctuary and outside the church office. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please make your check out to Ministerial Fellowship and place your check in the provided envelope. This offering will be dedicated on Sunday, September 9. (Your checks will be sent directly to the Ministerial Fellowship; this won t be included on your Salem Giving Statement at the end of the year.) JKV AND MEYER CARE CENTER BIBLE STUDY: John Knox Village and Meyer Care Center have a weekly Bible Study that is led, on a rotational schedule, by the Ministerial Fellowship. Greg Fine (Baptist) will be leading during the month of September. The Bible Study is held every Wednesday, 10:15-10:45 a.m. in the Gathering Room. 11 Labor Day reflections Labor Day brings to mind picnics, cookouts and family gatherings. Falling on the first Monday in September, it marks the unofficial end of summer and the beginning of a new school year. But the holiday was created in 1882 to honor the social and economic contributions of American workers. In a strong economy, it s easy to take for granted the ability to work and be paid well. But times have changed during the past few years, with many people still struggling with unemployment and underemployment. During our holiday celebrations this year, let s give thanks for the jobs we have, pray for those who aren t as fortunate and offer words of encouragement or help to someone who needs it. 10

12 UCC Mission Moment A New Identity What do you see outside your front door? Are there farms and rolling hills? Does the horizon stretch for miles so that the sky is like a blue canopy? Or is there a city street singing with the sounds of cars and people? Do you have children and a swing set, or do you live as a couple, or by yourself? Are you a young adult? Or do you collect social security? College? High School? Mechanic? Farmer? Teacher? Office worker? Unemployed? Nurse? Where you live and whatever you do, you see the world from that place. When John Dorhauer, General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ, taught a class in White Privilege to students at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, the assignment he gave at the end of every class was: Tell me what you see. That would be a great question to ask ourselves as we go out the door every morning. What do we see? How does who we are and where we live affect the way we see the world? The next question to ask ourselves might be this: How would the world look if we could change the color of our skin? If we could, for a day, wear the life of someone else. Today, look around you. What do you see? Imagine how your view would shift if you could be your neighbor and your neighbor could be you.
