1 T h e C O N N E C T I O N f r o m C h r i s t U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u r c h F e b r u a r y Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors. Journeys with Jean The community of believers was one in heart and mind. None of them would say, This is mine! about any of their possessions, but held everything in common. The apostles continued to bear powerful witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and an abundance of grace was at work among them all. Acts 4:32-33 We re all in this together! How many times have you heard this phrase? It seems to come up often when there are problems to be solved, or burdens to be shared, or challenges to be faced. We ve said it here at Christ UMC on any number of occasions! But we sometimes forget to say We re all in this together when there are accomplishments to be celebrated. So I would like to highlight a recent accomplishment of our church even though on the surface it may not appear to be worthy of celebration. Church Finances. We finished 2013 in better shape than we have for a number of years. Here are the figures: General/Operating Fund Income $748, Expenses $760, Deficit $-12, Building/Mortgage Fund Income $156, Mortgage Pmts $174, Deficit $-17, So why should we celebrate ending the year in the red? (1) Because we are blessed with some reserve funds that covered our deficit. (2) Because it is a LOT less red ink than we ve had in a number of years! In fact, just a short time ago our church had a budgeted deficit that was $149,000! While we would love to be totally balanced or even running a surplus we can all be very proud of what God has accomplished through our willing hearts and generosity. I want you to use one hand to pat yourselves on the back.and raise the other hand in praise and gratitude for all that God is doing among us. Then bring those hands together in prayer for God to continue to lead us into a strong and healthy future. Yours in Christ s love, Pastor Jean
2 Page 2 Pat s Ponderings Editor s note: Need a Fast Break? Join us for a night out! I need a break, don t you? 5 Page 5 Adult Education Opportunities Come join any of these groups: Sunday Mornings: Life & Times Lively discussions and lectures about powerful contemporary issues. Room 101, 9:00am Coming Soon: Comparative Religion offers you an opportunity to gain a solid grasp of the key ideas of religion itself the issues that repeatedly surface when you look at any faith's beliefs, practices, and organization. Using five major religions Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism as illustrations of how religions can address the same core issues in parallel and different ways, award-winning Professor Charles Kimball of the University of Oklahoma leads you on an exploration of religion's complex and multidimensional nature. Wesleyan Group Book Studies covering a wide range of topics. Parlor, 9:00 am. Beginning Sunday, Feb. 2nd, the Wesleyan Class will begin a review and study of "When Jesus Came to Harvard-- Making Moral Choices Today". The author, Harvey Cox, is professor of theology at Harvard Divinity School. Over the 15 years that Cox taught his Harvard undergraduate class, "Jesus and the Moral Life" the course grew so popular that the lectures had to be taught in a theatre usually reserved for rock concerts. The overwhelming response was a clear signal of the hunger for guidance in today's confusing world, where moral guidelines seem to shift daily. How can we ask "What would Jesus do?" when Jesus never had to cope with an unintended pregnancy, or confront a teenager about drug use, or decide whether to put an ailing parent in a retirement home? Cox brings the moral wisdom of Rabbi Jesus into the 21st century by way of the questions and arguments and doubts of centuries of rabbinic and Christian theology as well as the voices of thousands of Harvard students who attended his course over the years. Cox shows how we can extrapolate from Jesus parables and bridge the gap between the ancient and modern worlds. All are welcome. Bible Exploration The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus Journey with Adam Hamilton as he takes a fascinating look at the life and ministry of Jesus Christ. Room 207, 10:30am.
