Service for the Lord s Day Easter Sunday Service of the Word and Sacrament One Great Hour of Sharing Sunday April 20, :00 a.m. Please SILENCE ALL Personal Electronic Devices Before Worship. We Gather as God s People Welcome to our worship service. Take a moment to quiet yourself as we prepare ourselves for worship. Preparation for Worship With different gifts, with a variety of talents, with an array of interests, we come to worship you, our creating God. We are here to unite our spirits, to be made one in Christ, to be merged in hope as your children. Bless our differences, that the unique gifts and perceptions of each may strengthen our oneness. Drawn into your Spirit, we give you the thanks of our hearts, Amen. Prelude Welcome and the Announcements of Our Church Life and Ministry We welcome you to worship this morning at OCPC. To our guests, we extend a special welcome. Please take a moment to sign the black fellowship pads (in the pews), with your name and information about yourself that you want to share with us. Introit Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! OCPC Choir The Easter Procession of the Christ Candle and Alleluia Box The Children s Message Opening of the Alleluia Box Rev. Scott Marrese-Wheeler Blessing: You are God s beloved child. With you God is well pleased. Alleluia! Call to Worship [Responsive]... Deacon Randy Johnson Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: We thought you were dead. We thought the cross was the end. We thought that when the stone rolled over the tomb, that was it. But this is it: People: the dead are living; the cross is empty; the stone is rolled, and one word describes it all: Alleluia! Christ is risen! Leader: We thought you had said your final word. We thought those with the power had won. We thought that when you cried out, that was it. But this is it: People: the word breathes; the powers are defeated; the final cry was only the beginning, and one word says it all: Alleluia! Christ is risen! * Please stand as you are able. 1
Leader: We thought the story was finished. We thought the hope had ended. We thought that when the tomb was sealed, that was it. But this is it: People: the story has just begun; the hope is newly born; the tomb is empty, and one word says it all: Alleluia! Christ is risen! Leader: This is the news: People: Alleluia! Christ is risen! Leader: This is the moment People: Alleluia! Christ is alive! Leader: This is the gospel People: Alleluia! Christ is with us! Leader: We thought that when they crucified you, death had defeated life, and that was it. But this is it: Love is stronger than death, and one word says it all: People: Alleluia! Christ is risen! *The Hymn PH # Jesus Christ Is Risen Today *The Call to Confession... Rev. Scott Marrese-Wheeler *The Prayer of Confession [Responsive] Leader: Let us pray... We thank you God for this amazing day, when our hearts dance like the shining sun, when all the world leaps with life and the great, infinite wonders of the earth shout their yes! to you. People: We who have seen death, who have heard the story of the cross and sorrowed deep at the sharp agony of the world s pain, we have come to life again in the life of your Son. Leader: With Christ we have been lifted from the nothing of death into your new and unimagined life, where tasting, touching, hearing, seeing and breathing, are more sweet than we had known before and where you are in beauty and in truth. People: How could we ever doubt you, when today your Spirit makes us dance and shout, in the praise of the risen one, the one who has defeated death and all the evil powers? How could we doubt you, now that our ears are awake and our eyes are opened? Leader: We thank you God for this amazing day, when the evil in us lies down dead, and the good in us is born again. This is the birth day of life and love and goodness. People: This is the amazing day, when our Savior rose, when the earth released him, when the heavens echoed the praise of earth, on this great day. Alleluia! To our leaping, rising, lively, infinite, God. Amen. *Words of Assurance and Pardon [Responsive] Leader: For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. People: Alleluia! Amen! * Please stand as you are able. 2
*Confession Response PH # 579 Gloria Patri Glory Be to the Father Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen. *Passing of the Peace of Christ to One Another Leader: Jesus stood among his disciples and said: Peace be with you; why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? As the Risen Christ greeted the disciples with words of peace, calming their fears, let us greet one another now, sharing the peace of Christ. The Peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Let us share the peace of Christ. The Hymn PH # 118 (verse 1)... The Day of Resurrection! We Listen for God s Word Prayer for Illumination [Responsive]... Deacon Randy Johnson Leader: Let us pray... O God, week after week you arise, gathering your people, proclaiming your word of life, feeding us with food that is eternal, sharing your Spirit, and renewing the face of the earth. People: O God, transform us by this resurrection, that we may embrace all that you have made and live toward the justice that you intend through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. The First Reading Acts 10:34-43 (pages , N.T.) Deacon Randy Johnson The Second Reading Matthew 28:1-10 (pp , N.T.) Rev. 4 Offering of Our Tithes and Our Gifts to God Offertory Music Christ Arose OCPC Choir *Offertory Response PH # 592 Doxology The Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Offertory Prayer of Thanksgiving [In Unison] O God, accept and bless these gifts which we offer in response to the gracious gift of your life-giving Spirit to us. May these gifts and our lives be used to flesh out your love and justice, mercy and peace as they are revealed in and through Christ. Amen. The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper The Communion Hymn PH # Christ the Lord Is Risen Today! The Invitation Leader: Friends, gather around this resurrection table where all are welcomed and the good earth is affirmed. From her generosity, we bring these gifts of bread and wine. People: Here, together, around the table of the Risen Christ, we witness to hope, proclaiming the new life God has promised by our participation in Christ s liberation in the sharing of the bread of resurrection and the cup of the new covenant! The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving Leader: The Risen Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give God our thanks and praise. Leader: Be still and know that I am God. People: We are still in your presence. You are with us, Holy God. Leader: In Christ, you accompany us, embodied among us, sharing our birthing, our living, our dying. People: Sharing our dreams of hope and liberation, offering us new life, and the shattering of the tomb. Leader: In Christ, you appear as the host at the ebbing and the flowing of our lives. People: You beckon us to share your hospitality, Your challenge of Love. Leader: In Christ, you sit as the guest at the table of the stranger. People: You bless us with your presence, your awakening of Love. Leader: In Christ, you stand among us as host and guest at the heart of this community. People: You share with us your vulnerability, your unwrapping of Love. Leader: As hosts with Christ, we bless this bread. People: As guests with Christ, we pour this wine. * Please stand as you are able. 4
Leader: As welcomed strangers, united in Christ s life, death, and embodied liberation, we hear the words of promise: This is my body given for you; take and eat to remember me. This cup poured out: this is the new covenant in my blood; take and drink to remember me. In this action of justice making, we recall broken minds and bodies and blood shed through the lust for power and nature s turn of hand. People: Restore and Heal all that is wounded. Be present in the stillness of the waiting. Roll back the stone of prejudice and fear. Release the signs of Spring. Leader: We gently break this bread of fragile life. People: Our breaking down becomes our breaking through. Leader: As we eat this living bread and drink the new wine of resurrection, let us celebrate the cosmic Christ, our liberator and sustainer. People: Amen. The Words of Institution The Breaking of Bread and Sharing of Cup (You are invited to come forward to receive the Sacrament of Communion. Please come down the center aisle, take a piece of bread, dip in the cup on either side, eat, and return to your seat by the outside aisle. If you are unable to come forward, please let us know, and we will serve you in your seat.) The Prayer after Communion [In Unison] Thanks be to you, O God, for your presence and your purpose, for your loving kindness and your steadfast Spirit. May the blessings of this table strengthen our faith, increase our generosity and unify our hearts, for we pray in the name of Jesus, the Risen One. Alleluia! Amen. We Depart to Do God s Will *Closing Hymn PH # Christ Is Alive! *Charge and Benediction [Responsive]... Rev. Scott Marrese-Wheeler Leader: When the broken come to wholeness, when the wounded come to healing, when the frightened come to trusting, People: then the stone has been rolled away. Leader: When the lonely find friendship, when the hurt find new loving, when the worried find peace, People: then the stone has been rolled away. Leader: When we share instead of taking, when we stroke instead of striking, when we join around the table, People: then the stone has been rolled away. Leader: The stone has been rolled away! People: In you, Christ Jesus, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks through despair, life breaks through death. Leader: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: Risen indeed! Amen! * Please stand as you are able. 5
*Song of Dismissal PH # Thine Is the Glory Thine is the glory, Risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory Thou o er death hast won. Angels in bright raiment Rolled the stone away, Kept the folded grave clothes Where Thy body lay. Thine is the glory, Risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory Thou o er death hast won. Lo! Jesus meets us, Risen from the tomb; Lovingly He greets us, Scatters fear and gloom. Let the church with gladness Hymns of triumph sing, For the Lord now liveth; Death hath lost its sting. Thine is the glory, Risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory Thou o er death hast won. No more we doubt Thee, Glorious Prince of life! Life is nought without Thee; Aid us in our strife. Make us more than conquerors Through Thy deathless love; Bring us safe through Jordan To Thy home above. Thine is the glory, Risen, conquering Son; Endless is the victory Thou o er death hast won. Postlude Our liturgy this morning comes from various sources: The Call to Worship written by Roddy Hamilton, and posted on Mucky Paws. the Charge and Benediction: Easter poem by Francis Brienen of the United Kingdom from the book Prayers Encircling the World. Oakland-Cambridge Presbyterian Church is committed to using language in such a way that all members of the community of faith may recognize themselves to be included, addressed, and equally cherished before God. Seeking to bear witness to the whole world, the church struggles to use language which is faithful to the biblical truth and which neither purposefully nor inadvertently excludes people because of gender, color, or other circumstance in life. (Book of Order, W ) Thank you to everyone who provided food for our Easter breakfast between the services! There will be no fellowship refreshments after worship today. Our liturgist today is Deacon Randy Johnson. Thank you to our musicians today: Piano Marilyn Schuster and Organ Jean Gunnulson. Our ushers/greeters today are Derek & Cheryl Bettenhausen. The nursery is open today, but there is no attendant. Families must provide their own supervision. Prayer concerns are requested in writing on Sundays; the blue cards can be found on the table in fellowship hall. The ushers can assist you. Printed copies of sermons are available in the box on the wall outside of the church office and on our website Lectionary for Sunday, April 27 Acts 2:14a, 22-32; Psalm 16; 1 Peter 1:3-9; John 20: * Please stand as you are able. 6
