Touring Tom s Creek A Discipling Ministry of Tom s Creek Baptist Church: Discovering Church Membership We believe a great commitment to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission will grow a great Church!

Touring Tom s Creek A Discipling Ministry of Tom s Creek Baptist Church Discovering Church Membership SESSION ONE: OUR SALVATION For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus (Gal 3:26-28). What Does It Mean To Be a CHRISTIAN? Most people live their entire lives without ever knowing why? They exist year after year with no idea of why they live or God s purpose for their lives. The most basic question a person can ask is, what is the meaning of my life? Everyone wants to be happy. People try many ways: Some look for happiness by acquiring possessions. Some look for happiness by experiencing pleasure. Some look for happiness by gaining prestige and power. But real happiness comes from understanding my purpose. I. Why Am I Here? 1. God made me to love me! God says I have loved you with an everlasting love! (Jeremiah 31:3). According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundations of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself according to the good pleasure of his will... (Ephesians 1:4-5). 2. We were created to have a personal relationship with God and to rule/subdue all of the rest of God s creation! This makes us special! So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them and said unto them be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air, and of every living thing that moves upon the earth (Genesis 1:27-28).

God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17). Jesus said I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly (John 10:10). 3. When we know and love God and live in harmony with his purpose for our lives, it produces tremendous benefits in our life: Clear Conscience (Romans 8:1) Purpose (Romans 8:28) Power and Strength (Philippians 4:13) Life and Peace (Romans 8:6) Confidence (Romans 8:31) Fulfillment (Philippians 4:19) Help with Weakness (Romans 8:26) Security (Romans 8:39) Freedom (John 8:32) This is the kind of lifestyle God intends for us to live. Why then aren t most people really happy? II. What s the problem? Man has a natural desire to rebel and to ignore God s principles for living. Look out for #1. Do your own thing. If it feels good, do it regardless of what God says about it. It s my life, and I ll do as I please! THE BIBLE CALLS THIS ATTITUDE: SIN. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way (Isaiah 53:6). If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us (1 John 1:8). Sin breaks our close relationship with God. It causes us to fear God and try to live outside his will. Your iniquities have separated between you and your God (Isaiah 59:2). All have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). When our relationship to God is not right, it causes PROBLEMS in every area of our lives: marriage, career, relationships, finances, etc.

WHEN PEOPLE HAVE PROBLEMS, THEY OFTEN TRY MANY DIFFERENT WAYS OF COPING BEFORE TURNING TO GOD. There is a way that seemeth right unto man, but the end therof are the ways of death (Proverbs 16:25). Even when we know that our deepest need is God, we often try wrong ways of getting to know him: My mother was a Christian, so... It doesn t matter what you believe, just be sincere. I ll give up all of my bad habits. I ll work real hard and earn it. I ll be religious and go to church. III. What s The Solution? Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life no man cometh unto the father but by me (John 14:6) God himself came to earth as a human being to bring us back to himself. If any other way had worked, Jesus Christ would not have had to come. The way is a person! Jesus has already taken care of your sin problem! The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23). God did this for us because he loves us and wants us to know him. God commended his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5). God has already done his part to restore our relationship to him. He took the initiative. Now he waits for each of us to individually accept what he has done. IV. What Does God Want Me To Do? 1. Confess that God has not been first in your life and ask him to forgive your sins. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

2. Believe that Jesus died to pay for your sins and that he rose again and is alive today. If thou shalt confess the Lord Jesus Christ and shalt believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved (Romans 10:9). 3. Accept God s free gift of salvation. Don t try to earn it! For by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). 4. Ask Jesus Christ come into your life and be the Lord of your life. As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John 1:12). Behold I stand at the door and knock if any man hear my voice and open the door I will come into him... (Revelation 3:20). You can take these steps by praying a simple prayer of commitment to God: Dear Jesus, thank you for making me and loving me, even when I ve ignored you and gone my own way. I realize I need you in my life and I am sorry for my sins. I ask you to forgive me. Thank you for dying on the cross for me. Please help me to understand it more. As much as I know how, I want to follow you from now on. Please come into my life and make me a new person inside. I accept your gift of salvation. Please help me to grow now on as a Christian. In Jesus name, Amen. Whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13). The Importance of Being Baptized I. Why should I be Baptized? 1. To follow the example set by Jesus Christ. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized of John in Jordan (Mark 1:9). 2. Because Christ commanded it. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, son and Holy Ghost. Teaching to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you (Matthew 28:19-20). 3. It demonstrates that I really am a Christian....many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized (Acts 18:8)....we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments (1 John 2:3).

II. What Is The Meaning Of Baptism? 1. It illustrates Christ s burial and resurrection....christ died for our sins according to the scriptures: and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day... (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Buried with him in baptism, wherein ye are also risen with through faith of the operation of God who raised him from the dead (Colossians 2:12). 2. It illustrates my new birth as a Christian. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away, behold all things become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4). Baptism does not make you a believer, it shows that you already believe. It can not save you only your faith in Christ does that. Baptism is like a wedding ring: it s the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart. For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God (Ephesians 2:8). III. Why Be Baptized By Immersion? 1. Because Jesus was baptized that way. And Jesus when he was baptized went up straightway out of the water... (Matthew 3:16). 2. Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion. For example,...they went down both into the water, Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water... (Acts 8:38-39). 3. The word baptize means to immerse water. The Greek word baptizo means, to immerse or dip under water. It symbolizes a burial and resurrection! The founders of denominations agree: Martin Luther: I would have those who were baptized to be entirely immersed as the word imports and the mystery signifies. John Calvin: The word baptize signifies to immerse. It is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient church. John Wesley: buried with him, alludes to baptizing by immersion according to the custom of the first church. IV. Who Should Be Baptized? 1. Every person who has believed in Christ. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized... (Acts 2:41).

Then Simon himself believed also: and was baptized... (Acts 8:13). At Tom s Creek, we wait until our children are old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism after they have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord. It is a membership requirement that every member must have been baptized the way Jesus demonstrated. V. When Should I Be Baptized? As soon as you have believed! Then they that received his word were baptized: and the same day... (Acts 2:41). There is no reason to delay. As soon as you have decided to receive Christ into your life, you can and should be baptized. If you wait until you are perfect, you will never feel good enough. Our baptismal service is scheduled as needed. What should I wear when I am baptized? A robe will be provided. Just bring a change of clothes, towel, plastic bag for wet clothes, and a hair dryer. Will I have to say anything? After you have entered the water, the Pastor will briefly explain Baptism. He will introduce you and ask if you have confessed Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and if you would like to say anything, then he will pray and then lower you into the water. Then you can leave the water and dry off. Later you will be given a baptism certificate. We encourage you to invite all of your friends and relatives to attend your baptism. The Meaning Of The Lord s Supper Jesus never asked his disciples to remember his birth. But he did instruct them to remember his death and resurrection. He gave two visible symbols (called ordinances ) as reminders of his death and resurrection. These two ordinances are baptism and the Lord s Supper. The Lord s Supper is an object lesson that represents a great spiritual truth for believers. I. What is the Lord s Supper? (1 Corinthians 11:23-26) 1. It is a reenactment:...the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread... (1 Corinthians 11:23). 2. It is a representation: and when he had given thanks he brake it and said, take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. (1 Corinthians 11:24).

3. It is a remembrance: After the same manner also he took the cup and said this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me (1 Corinthians 11:25). 4. It is a reminder: For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord s death till he come (1 Corinthians 11:26). II. Who should take the Lord s Supper? Only those who are already saved (Mark 14:22-26). For he that eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord s body (1 Corinthians 11:29). III. How do I prepare myself for the Lord s Supper? 1. By Self- Examination: Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man so examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup (1 Corinthians 11:27-28). 2. By Confessing my sins: if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). 3. By Recommitment:...that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Romans 12:1). 4. By Restoring Relationships:...if thy brother hath ought against thee:... first be reconciled to thy brother and then come and offer thy gift (Matthew 5:23-24). IV. When and how often should we observe the Lord s Supper? Jesus never said when or how often believers should observe the Lord s Supper. He instituted it on a Thursday night. We observe the Lord s Supper every fifth Sunday of the month in the morning worship service.

Session Two: The Tom s Creek Statements Now I beseech you brethren by the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing that there be no division among you; that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and the same judgement (1 Corinthians 1:10). Our Purpose Statement: Why we exist as a Church The purpose of the church is summarized in a single sentence based on two scriptures: We believe a great commitment to the great commandment and the great commission will grow a great Church! The Great Commandment: Jesus said, thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul and with all thy mind...thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22:37-40). The Great Commission: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing then in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you... (Matthew 28:19-20). To Love God with all of your heart is to WORSHIP To Love your neighbor as yourself is MINISTRY To Go...make disciples is EVANGELISM To Teach them...all things is DISCIPLESHIP Tom s Creek Baptist Church Exists: 1. To celebrate God s presence (worship) 2. To demonstrate God s Love (ministry) 3. To communicate God s word (evangelism) 4. To educate God s people (discipleship) I. We Exist To Celebrate God s Presence (Worship):..thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thy serve (Matthew 4:10)....thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul with all thy mind (Matthew 22:37)....now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father seeketh such to worship him (John 4:23 24).

Expressions of Worship Singing (Ephesians 5:19) Commitment (Romans 12:1-2) Praying (Psalm 95:6) Hearing the Word (John 17:17) Giving (1 Corinthians 16:1-2) Baptism (Romans 6:3-4) Meditating (Habakkuk 2:20) Lord s Supper (1 Corinthians 11:23-26) Tom s Creek Worship Style Celebration Psalm 122:1 Inspiration Isaiah 40:31 Preparation Ephesians 4:11-12 II. We exist to Communicate God s Word (Evangelism): To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God... (Ephesians 3:10). For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:13-14) Why Our Church Must Not Stop Growing 1. Because none should perish...not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). * See also: 2 Cor. 5:14, Luke 15:3-10, Matt.9: Because God s house should be full...go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled (Luke 14:23)....and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8). 3. Because the Church needs to be complete And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God (Colossians 2:19)....and I will build my church... (Matthew 16:18). Unbiblical Excuses For Not Growing: God isn t interested in numbers. Our church wants quality, not quantity. Large churches are impersonal. We believe our church must grow in quality and quantity at the same time.

And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come (Matthew 24:14). III. We Exist To Educate God s People (Discipleship): But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ... (2 Peter 3:18) And he gave some, apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, work of the ministry and edifying the body of Christ...unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-13). IV. We Exist to Demonstrate God s Love (Ministry): By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another (John 13:35). ** See also: 1 John3:16-17, Matt. 25:34-40, Heb. 13:16, Romans 12:13 The heartbeat of Tom s Creek is our ministry. Every member needs to be a part of one. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same spirit. There are differences of administration, but the same Lord...Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular (1 Cor. 12:4-5, 27). Our Statement of Faith: What We Believe In essential beliefs we have unity. There is one body, one spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling: One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is above all, and through all, and in you all (Ephesians 4:4-6) In non-essential beliefs we have liberty. Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations...who art thou that judgest another man s servant, to his own master will he stand or fall...for God is able to make him stand... every one of us shall give account of himself to God...hast thou faith? Have it to thyself before God (Romans 14:1, 4, 12, 22). In all our beliefs we show charity. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could move mountains and have not charity I am nothing (1 Corinthians 13:2).

The Essentials We Believe 1. About God God is the creator and ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and one God (Gen. 1:1, 26-27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2, Matt. 28:19; 1 Peter 1:2 2 Cor. 13:14). 2. About Jesus Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate his power over sin and death. He ascended to heaven s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Matt. 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:10-30; Hebrews 4:14-15; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Timothy 6:14-15;Titus 2:13). 3. About the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son of God. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of Salvation. He provided the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer a spiritual gift when they are saved. As Christians seek to live under his daily control. 4. About the Bible The Bible is God s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit of God. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error (2 Timothy 1:13, 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21; Psalm 12:6; 119:105, 160; Proverbs 30:5). 5. About Human Beings People are made in the spiritual image of God, to be like him in character. People are the supreme object of God s creation. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all of us are marred by an attitude of disobedience toward God called SIN. This attitude separates people from God and causes many problems in life (Gen. 1:27; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6a, 59:1-2; Romans 3:23). 6. About Salvation Salvation is God s free gift to us but we must accept it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from the penalty of sin. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith and repentance we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith (Romans 5:1, 6:23; Eph. 2:8-9; John 1:12, 14:6; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26).

7. About Eternal Security Because God gives us eternal life through Jesus Christ, the true believer is secure in that salvation for eternity. If you have been genuinely saved, you can not loose your salvation. Salvation is maintained by the grace and power of God, not by our selfeffort of the Christian. It is the grace and keeping power of God that gives us this security (John 10:29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25, 10:10,14; 1 Peter 1:3-5). 8. About Eternity People were created to exist forever. We will either exist eternally separated from God by sin in Hell or eternally with God through forgiveness and salvation in Heaven. To be eternally separated from God is Hell and to be eternally in union with Him is eternal Life. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence (John 2:25, 3:16, 5:11-13; Romans 6:23; Revelation 20:15; Matt.1:8, 2:44, 46). Further discussion of these major doctrines can be found in these books: What the Faith is All About by Elmer Towns Doctrines Baptists Believe by Roy Edgemon The Baptist Faith and Message by Herschell Hobbs Foundational Doctrines of Faith by Elmer Towns Our Lifestyle: What We Practice Beliefs are not worth much unless they are translated into action. Based on what the Bible teaches, we feel strongly about the following seven practices (B.A.P.T.I.S.T.): Bible as our sole authority. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work (1 Timothy 3:16-17). Since God s Word is the only completely reliable and truthful authority, we accept the Bible as our manual for living and the basis for our beliefs. We practice daily Bible reading, study, and memorization. Autonomy of each local Church. And he is the head of the body, the Church, who is the beginning, the firstborn of the dead, that in all things he may have preeminence (Colossians 1:18). Christ is the recognized head of our church, not any person, group, or religious organization. While recognizing the value of associating and cooperating with other groups of Christians, we believe every local church should be self-governing and independent from any denominational control. We choose to cooperate with churches in the Tugalo Baptist Association, Georgia Baptist Convention, and the Southern Baptist Convention as it relates to our overall purpose as a church.

Priesthood of every believer....to him who loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and has made us kings and priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen (Revelations 1:5-6). The Bible teaches that every Christian is called to full time Christian service, regardless of his or her vocation. We practice the truth that every believer is a minister by encouraging every member to find a place of service and ministry. Every believer has direct access to God through prayer and Bible reading. Tithing And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord s (Leviticus 26:30). At Tom s Creek we encourage tithing for the support of the Lord s Body, the Church, as God commands. We recognize that giving 10% of our income is the Biblical standard of giving that we should be attaining or striving to attain. Immersion Buried with him in baptism, in which you also were raised with him through faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead (Colossians 2:12). We practice baptism by immersion under water, the way Jesus was baptized. Spirit-led Living I am the vine and ye are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing (John 15:5). We believe the only possible way to live the Christian life is by God s power within us. We seek to practice a daily dependence on God s spirit to enable us to do what is right. Telling others about Christ But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is within you (1 Peter 3:15). Every Christian has the responsibility to share the gospel with those God brings us into contact with. We practice personal witnessing and inviting others to Church.

Session Three: The Tom s Creek Structure For God is not the author of confusion but of peace... Let all things be done decently and in order (1 Corinthians 14:33, 40). How Our Church is Structured: The structure of the church should not be determined by culture, business practices, or even denominational traditions. The nature of the Church determines its structure. I. The Church is a Fellowship. and they continued in the apostles doctrine and fellowship... (Acts 2:42). A top priority in a fellowship is unity and peace. Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). Let us pursue things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another (Romans 14:19). Any attitude that causes disunity is SIN! ** See Col. 2:2, 3:15, 3:13-14; 1 Cor. 1:10, 14:33; 2 Tim. 2:14,23; Prov. 17:14; Ps. 133:11 Phil. 1:27; John 13:34-35; Romans 15:5-6, 12:16-18;1 Peter 3:8; 2 Cor. 13:11 Implication: A good structure promotes unity and downplays division For first of all when you come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you... (1 Corinthians 11:18). We have business meetings on the third Wednesday night of each month before the evening service to: Provide a Financial Report Provide reports from committees & education organizations Vote on matters significant to the life of the Church II. The Church is a Family Finally ye be of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous (1 Pet. 3:8). ** See also Gal. 6:10; Heb. 2:10-12; I Pet. 4:17 Therefore, we operate on the basis of a family not a firm. Rebuke not an elder but treat him as a father, and the younger as brethren; the elder women as mothers and the younger as sisters with all purity (1 Tim. 5:1-2).

One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; for if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God? (1 Tim. 3:4-5) III. The Church is a Body I Cor. 12:27; Eph. 5:23; Eph. 1:22-23; Col.1:18, 2:19 We are a body not a business! We are an organism not an organization. Therefore, we function on the basis of body not business For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us... (Romans 12:4-6). In an organization maintenance becomes the focus, but in an organism, ministry is the focus. At Tom s Creek, we have a simple structure so we can maximize ministry and minimize maintenance. And he gave some apostles, some prophets, evangelists, Pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-12). Our Structure: The People are the sheep. The Pastor is the shepherd. IV. The Church is a Flock The flock is Jesus s favorite description of the Church: John 10:1-30; Mat. 25:33, 26:31 Therefore it is cared for and led by a Shepherd Pastor Three different terms are used in the New Testament to refer to the same church leaders: Poimen, Presbuteros, Episcopos The Pastor, deacons and staff are to lead by spiritual example, by influence, by persuasion, not by dictation. The elders which are among you I exhort... feed the flock of God which is among you taking the oversight thereof... (1 Peter 5:1-2). Deacons The term used in the New Testament is diakonia, which literally translates to

minister. Therefore, a deacon is one who serves and ministers rather than one who sits on a board. A deacon is a servant leader who ministers alongside the Pastor. ** See I Timothy 3:8-13 Our Affiliation Tom s Creek has chosen to cooperate with three groups of Churches: 1. The Tugalo Association: Churches that fellowship together and work together to reach Toccoa and surrounding counties (43 Churches) 2. The Georgia Baptist Convention: Churches that work together with the goal of evangelizing our State. 3. The Southern Baptist Convention: 50,000 Churches that cooperate together in a worldwide effort of missions. What is the Southern Baptist Convention? It is the largest association of Christian Churches in America. One out of every ten churches in America is affiliated with the SBC churches and 16 million members, which is more than most other denominations combined. It is the most diverse association of churches. SBC churches include every race, nationality, and ethnic group. Each Sunday, services are held in over 80 languages in the U.S. The SBC baptizes over 1,000 new Christians a day in the U.S. and begins nearly five new churches a day! Why not just be an independent Church? We are an independent Church! Every SBC church is completely independent. There is no denominational control or hierarchy, as there is in most other denominations. Each church is self-governed and determines its own affairs. For example: Every SBC church chooses its own Pastor. Every SBC church owns its own buildings and assets. Every SBC church determines its own programs. What are the advantages of affiliating with the SBC? 1. It allows us to identify with other Christians around the world who are known for their commitment to the Bible. Unlike other groups, SBC has no man-made creed. The Bible is our only authority. 2. It allows our church to participate in the largest missionary organization in the world. Through the SBC Cooperative Program we help support over 7,500 missionaries in 104 countries around the world.

What It Means To Be A Member The difference between members and attenders is commitment. We ask you to commit to membership for 4 reasons: 1. A Biblical Reason: Christ committed to the Church...Christ loved the Church and gave his life for it... (Ephesians 5:25). 2. A Cultural Reason: An antidote to our society. We live in an age where very few want to be committed to anything... a job.. A marriage..our country. This attitude has even produced a generation of church shoppers and hoppers. Membership swims against the current of America s consumer religion. It is an unselfish decision. Commitment always builds character. 3. A Practical Reason: It defines who can be counted on. Every team must have a roster. Every school must have enrollment. Every business has a payroll. Every army has an enlistment. Even our country takes a census and requires voter registration. Membership identifies our family. 4. A Personal Reason: It produces Spiritual Growth. The New Testament places a major emphasis on the need for Christians to be accountable to each other for spiritual growth. You can not be accountable when you are not committed to any specific church family. What Is Expected Of Me As A Member? We never ask our members to do more than the Bible clearly teaches. We only expect our members to do what the Bible expects every Christian to do. These responsibilities are spelled out in the Membership Covenant. Tom s Creek Membership Covenant: Having received Christ as my Lord and Savior and been baptized, and being in agreement with Tom s Creek statements, strategy and structure, I now feel led by the Holy Spirit to unite with this church family. In doing so, I commit myself to God and to the other members to do the following: 1. I will protect the unity of my Church By acting in love toward other members By refusing to gossip By following the leadership Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and wherewith may edify (Romans 4:19).

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good (Ephesians 4:29). Obey them that have the rule over you... (Hebrews 13:17). 2. I will share the responsibility of my church. By praying for its growth By inviting the unchurched to attend By warmly welcoming those who visit We give thanks always to God for you all, making mention of you in our prayers (1 Thessalonians 1:2)....Go into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in... (Luke 14:23). Wherefore, receive ye one another as Christ also receives us to the glory of God (Romans 15:7). 3. I will serve the ministry of my church By discovering my gifts and talents By being equipped to serve By developing a servants heart As every man has received the gift, even so MINISTER... (1 Peter 4:10). For the perfecting of the saints, for the edifying of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12). Let nothing be done through vain glory: but in lowliness of mind... look not every man on his own things, but every man on the things of others...took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men (Phil. 2:3-4,7). 4. I will support the testimony of my Church. By attending faithfully By living a godly life By giving regularly Not forsaking the assembling of yourselves together... (Hebrews 10:25). Only let your conversation be as it becomes the gospel of Christ... (Philippians 1:27). Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him... (1 Corinthians 16:2).
