4 January 20, From the Pastor s Desk The Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity The annual week of prayer for Christian Unity will be observed from Monday, January 18 th through Monday, January 25 th. The theme for this year 2019 is Justice and only Justice You Shall Follow (Deut 16:18-20). The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began in 1908 as the Octave of Christian Unity, and focused on prayer for church unity. Since then, once a year, all Christians are reminded of Jesus prayer for his disciples that that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. (John 17:21) Hearts are touched and Christians come together to pray for unity. During this week, parishes all over the world exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. All Christians are called to proclaim in their own ways the great things God has done for them. 46 th Annual March for Life January 22 nd is the anniversary of the Supreme Court Decision, Roe vs. Wade (1973). Catholic Bishops of the United States have designated January 22 nd as a special day of prayer and penance for the legal protection of unborn children. Since then, every January 22 nd, our Nation s Capital witnesses the enormous crowd of marchers who protest against this decision. We pray that more and more people choose life and not death. Let us follow Mary s instruction: Do whatever He (Jesus) tells you Today, we rejoice in God who has never forsaken us! In the first reading, He assures us of His willingness to continue to protect and save us, His people. In the second reading, Paul reminds us that God has lavished each of us with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. We must use these gifts, generously given by God, to serve the Church also generously, for freely you have received, freely give. (Mt. 10:8) In the Gospel, we read about the first miracle (sign) of Jesus: changing water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana. The Blessed Virgin Mother had an important role in this miracle. Showing her motherly concern for those in need, she alerted Jesus that the wine had run out. Through her intercession, Jesus responded to the need. The miracle at Cana teaches us many things. It challenges us to follow Our Lord s example of enriching the empty lives of those around us with the new wine of love, mercy, concern, and care. This event also demonstrates our Blessed Mother s love and concern for us, her children. Jesus may be able to refuse requests, but definitely not those coming from His Mother! It is important to note, however, that we should have the mind and heart of Christ, for only then can we really Do whatever He tells you. God bless you, Fr. John Francis
5 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CORNER Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C. - Director of Faith Formation Contact Information We have now entered into Ordinary Time of our Liturgical Year once again. Through the celebrations, the particular scripture, prayers, music and even the liturgical color for each liturgical season, we are helped to enter more deeply into and live the salvation that Jesus has brought us. During the four weeks of Advent, the color purple reminded us of the spiritual preparation necessary to enable us to experience in a deeper way the birth of Jesus in our hearts. Then during the Christmas season, extending from Christmas to the Baptism of Jesus, the color white/gold emphasized the joy we experience: the long-promised Savior has come. The day after the Baptism of Jesus, begins Ordinary Time with the color green which symbolized growth and hope. The term ordinary may make us think what happens during these 34 weeks is very ordinary in the sense that we are not preparing for His coming at Christmas; we are not celebrating His birth; nor are we in the midst of the 40 days of Lent and the joy-filled 50 days of Easter ending with Pentecost. The weeks immediately following the Baptism of Jesus up to Ash Wednesday and then from the day after Pentecost to the Feast of Christ the King are referred to as Ordinary Time because they are counted by numbers referred to as ordinands. During the weeks of Ordinary Time, through the teachings, parables, and miracles, we enter more deeply into Jesus life of making God known and teaching us the Way that leads to our eternal happiness in heaven. This is the mission that the Father entrusted to Jesus. During Lent and Easter, we will reflect more deeply on how Jesus brought His mission to fulfillment. Next week s bulletin will explain why the number of weeks in Ordinary Time before Ash Wednesday vary from year to year. God bless you! Sister Alice Michael, S.U.S.C.
