1 2 10/21/01 2Timothy 2:14-26 Paul has given Timothy four pictures that reveal what he is called to be: 1. That of a faithful son. vs That of a devoted and victorious soldier. vs That of a disciplined athlete. vs That of a hard-working farmer. vs. 6 There are three other metaphors that Paul is going to use to communicate what Timothy is called to be. 1. That of a workman. vs That of a vessel. vs That of a servant. vs. 24 Timothy stands in sharp contrast to the opponents and the false teachers at Ephesus. In the first division Timothy is to have Commitment to perseverance through the gospel. 2Tim. 1:3-2:13 In the second division Timothy is to have Commitment to protection of the gospel. 2Tim. 2:14-3:17 In the third division Timothy is to have, Commitment to the proclamation of the gospel. 2Tim. 4:1-18 2:14-19 The diligent workman. 2:14 The charge to proclaim. 1) Timothy is to remind the Ephesians of these things, a) Some think these things refers only to what immediately precedes regarding being faithful or denying Christ. vs b) Others think it refers to a larger section from the beginning of the chapter. vs * The only problem is that Paul is addressing Timothy personally in verses one to ten. 2) The charge is an imperative not an option. a) The word charge "diamarturomai" means to attest, protest earnestly or religiously charge and is used in Classical Greek to call gods and men to witness. b) The charge is before the Lord, they would be personally responsible to him as they heard the charge. 3) The charge is to avoid strife of words to no profit. a) The phrase logomacheo appears only this one time in the New Testament and literally means to wage word battles that neither
3 4 communicate or clear up spiritual truth. 1Tim. 6:4-5 b) The only things that these types of interchanges profit in is the ruin of the hearer, both the one arguing and the observer, we get our word catastrophe from it. 1)) The word ruin kataotron means to turn upside down, overthrow, subverted. 2)) It appears only one other time for the ruin of Sodom and Gomorrah. 2Pet. 2:6 2:15 The competent student. 1) Timothy was to live under God s examination. a) The word diligent spoudazo means zeal with the idea of effort. b) The manner is so as to be approved dokimos referring to being tested for the purpose of passing the test. 2) Timothy is to do this in order to be a worker who does not need to be ashamed of his knowledge of the word. a) The topic of being ashamed has already been laid. 2Tim. 1:8. 12,16 b) The reason being that Timothy is handling the word with skill to interpret and teach it scripturally. 1)) The phrase rightly dividing orthotomaunta, literally means to cut straight, appearing only this time. 2)) It was used of cutting a straight road through forested areas, to plough a straight furrow and of a mason of cutting and squaring stones. 3)) The object is the word of truth which refers to the gospel that Timothy is to expound properly and giving the full council of God. 2:16 The wise worker. 1) Timothy is to shun profane and idle babblings. a) The word shun simply means to get away from. 1Tim. 1:4; 4:7a; 6:4, 20 b) Idle babblings kenophonias is a phrase that refers to empty and worthless chatter. 2) The reason is given to Timothy, they will increase to more ungodliness. a) The idle babblings have no content of worth to instruct or build up a person in godliness living. 1Tim. 1:6, 9; 4:7 b) These describe the teaching of the opponents, which were only producing more ungodliness in the
5 6 people s lives at Ephesus and advancing other errs and evils. 2:17 The outcome of the opponent s message. 1) The message will spread like a cancer. a) The word cancer gangraina was a medical term literally meant a malignant sore, to gnaw, eat, spread, gangrene, this is the only appearance. b) That which is totally contrary to the gospel and the nature of eternal life. 2) Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort. a) Hymenaeus is said to of made shipwreck concerning the faith along with one Alexander. 1Tim. 1:19-20 b) The apostle turned both over to Satan that the might not learn to blaspheme. 1Tim. 1:6 * Paul says that Satan and his angels can transform themselves into angels of light. 2Cor. 11: :18 The particular failure of these men. a) They strayed concerning the truth. b) The word strayed estochesan means to diviate, veer off track and wonder away. c) The word truth alethea means genuine referring to the gospel. d) They were saying that the resurrection was already past. e) The denial of the resurrection was a denial of Jesus. * They were possibly teaching a spiritualizing resurrection! f) The denial of the resurrection was the preaching of another gospel. 1Cor. 15: ) They were responsible for the overthrow of the faith of some. a) The word overthrown anatrepo means to subvert, to turn upside down. b) The same word appears one other time in the New Testament translated subvert. Tit. 1:11 2:19 The peaceful assurance of the diligent worker. 1) Nevertheless is adversative like the a contrasting conjunction but contrasting the true believer from those who strayed away. 2) The firm and hard fact stands that God knows those who are His elect. 2Tim. 1:9, 2:10 a) The seal was a mark of ownership. * The quotation if from the LXX when Korah, Dothan and the 250 men rebelled. Num. 16:5, 25-26
7 8 b) By God s knowledge of His own and a life of holiness on man s part, these are the marks of the seal. * Abiding in the doctrine of the gospel. c) The Holy Spirit is the seal of the believer. 2Cor. 1:22; Eph. 1:13 d) The command is for everyone who names the name of the Christ, depart from iniquity. e) To depart aphistemi means to remove oneself and is used of those who had apostatized from the faith. 1Tim. 4:1 1)) A constant abiding in Christ is the teaching of the Scriptures. Jn. 15:4 2)) A constant exercising of one s own will to walk with God. 1Pet. 1:16; 2Cor. 6:17 2:20-23 The vessel of honor. 2:20 The illustration of the various vessels. 1) The word But would be better translated howbeit. 2) There are in a house vessels of gold, silver, wood and clay. 3) There are some vessels used for honor and some of dishonor. 2:21 The interpretation of the various vessels. 1) Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor. a) The word therefore means this is the conclusion of the preceding matter of who belong to God. vs b) The latter refers to the vessels of dishonor c) The emphasis is on free-will not the sovereignty of God s election, the person choosing to cleanse themselves from the vessels of dishonor. Phil. 2:12-13 * The word cleanses refers to the trying of metals. 2) The outcome will be that the individual will be a vessel for honor. Eph. 2:10; Tit. 3:8 a) Sanctified, set apart. b) Useful for the Master. c) Prepared for every good work. * This take place by rightly dividing the word of truth and choosing to obey the truth! 2:22 The application of the vessels. 1) Timothy, you flee youthful lust, those fleshly desires and passions that make you a vessel of dishonor.
9 10 a) This is the only time this phrase appears in the New Testament. b) The phrase is in the present, a continuous action. 2) But pursue righteousness which is right living with one s fellowman, faith refers to trusting and obeying God s word, love is yielding to God s agape and peace is the pursuit of tranquility and harmony with all who call on the lord our of a pure heart. 1Tim. 6:11 2:23 The wise vessel. 1) But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes. a) The word but marks the sharp contrast to the preceding verse. b) The word foolish moros means moron, stupid. c) The word ignorant means ill-educated speculations that are far removed from the gospel truth. 1Tim. 6:4; Tit. 3:9 2) The reason is given such things generate strife. a) The outcome is fighting about words. 2Tim. 2:14 b) The fruit is not good. c) The result is not honor. 2:24-26 The servant of the Lord 2 24 The characteristic of a servant of the Lord. 1) He is a servant doulos, a bond slave by choice. 2) He must not quarrel machomai which means contentious, a fighter of words. 2) He must be gentle epios referring to a quality of kindness. 3) He must be able to teach by his gift, anointing and hard study. * This was one of the qualifications for a bishop. 1Tim. 3:2 4) He must be patient anexikakos means enduring of ill and describes one who bears evil and sorrow and ill treatment without irritability.. 2:25a-c The attitude and perspective of the servant of the Lord. 1) He must in humility correct those who are in opposition. a) Humility praotes means power under control. b) Correcting paideuo comes from the root pais a child and originally was used of bringing up a child, to educate in moral and spiritual maturity in order to affect his conscious will and actions. 2) The reason is that perhaps God will grant them repentance.
11 12 a) The word repentance metanoia means a change of mind that is demonstrated by a change of life through the conviction of the Holy Spirit, otherwise it is repentance of the world that brings forth death by virtue of only being emotionally and intellectually regretful of the consequences but void of turning from a life of evil and sin. 2Cor a) The goodness of God leads man to repentance but if there is an unrepentant heart, the person treasures up for himself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God. Rom. 2:4-5 b) The idea is that of regaining their ability to recover their deceptive intoxication of error out of drunken stupor to soberness. 1Cor. 15:34 c) The picture of deception is that of a trap, a snare, having no freedom that can eventually lead to destruction. d) The word snare pagis means whatever makes fast or holds fast. 3) The sinner had been taken captive by Satan to do his will. a) He is the god of this world. 2Cor. 4:4 god of this world b) Some say this refers to God's will but the context fits Satan's will 2:25d-26 The benefit the sinner through the servant of the Lord 1) The sinner comes to know the truth. a) The outcome is understanding of the gospel. 1Tim. 1:20 b) The word know epinosis means complete, full knowledge. b) The truth is referring to the gospel. 2) The sinner comes to their senses and escapes the snare of the devil. a) The phrase ananepho literally means to be sober.
