3 Text: 1 Timothy 1:1-20 I. Salutation (vv. 1-2) Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope, To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (1 Timothy 1:1 2, ESV) A. "Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus" (1:1a) 1. One out as an official representative of Christ. This phrase is commonly used by Paul as a self-designation in the openings of his letters. Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are not you my workmanship in the Lord? (1 Corinthians 9:1, ESV) The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works. (2 Corinthians 12:12, ESV) B. "by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope" (1:1b) 1. Paul reinforces his authority by stating that his apostleship came by command of God. C. "Timothy, my true child" (1:2a) 1. Paul views Timothy as his spiritual. That is why I sent you Timothy, my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach them everywhere in every church. (1 Corinthians 4:17, ESV) But you know Timothy s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. (Philippians 2:22, ESV) D. "Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. " (1:2b) 1. Grace: Goodwill disseminated (by God); especially to the benefit of the recipient For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, (Titus 2:11 12, ESV) 2. Mercy: leniency and compassion shown toward by a person or agency of authority he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, (Titus 3:5, ESV) 3. Peace: Harmonious relations and from disputes Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Warning Against False Teachers (1:3-7) As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions. (1 Timothy 1:3 7, ESV) A. Characteristics of False Doctrine 1. Myths: Paul speaks of Jewish myths, perhaps referring to the kinds of legends about Old Testament figures that are found in many of the Jewish writing 2. Endless Genealogies: Perhaps a reference to an early form of the detailed speculations that developed in concerning the origins of the world and the innumerable spiritual beings supposedly involved in creation But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. (Titus 3:9, ESV) B. Aim of Paul's Charge is Love, Issuing from: 1. a heart 2. a conscience 3. a faith C. False Teachers Swerved From These into: 1. discussions 2. teaching the law without 3. truth-less assertions III. Purpose of The Law (1:8-11) Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted. (1 Timothy 1:8 11, ESV) A. Law is Good when used (v. 8) So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure. (Romans 7:12 13, ESV) B. 5 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary. (Galatians 3:19, ESV) C. for the Righteous (vv. 10b-11) So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. (Galatians 3:24 26, ESV) IV. Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners (1:12-17) I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:12 17, ESV) A. Who Paul (vv ) 1. Blasphemer 2. Persecutor 3. Insolent Opponent But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. (Acts 8:3, ESV) circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. Paul's Charge to Timothy (1:18-20) This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. 6 whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. (1 Timothy 1:18 20, ESV) A.
