1 Volume 22, Number 4 April 2013 Monthly Newsletter of St. Timothy s Episcopal Church, Danville, CA Dear Parish Family: By now you will have heard about our upcoming Bring A Friend To Church Sunday on April 28. We are asking each of you, to use the invitation cards that we have provided at church as the medium to connect with people you know, and to invite them to worship with you at Saint Timothy s, for which ever service you would normally attend on that day. So, why are we doing this? As you likely know, and the youth in our recent confirmation class even pointed out to us, Saint Timothy s is one of the BEST places to worship God and grow in community; and, we have done a pretty good job of keeping that a SE- CRET! Unless you are willing to assume that everyone who should be an Episcopalian already is one, then there is room for us to grow; and we are called to go to those around us who would be blessed (as you are) by experiencing the love of God in the fellowship of our congregation. As we have been hearing in these past few weeks during the Easter season through the reading of the Acts of the Apostles going and growing are intimately connected together. For, as we go, the presence and life of God can grow; both in us and in those we are called to reach out to. A part of that growth is making room for God to do new things in our hearts and bring new people into our lives. Again, unless you believe that there is no thing or place or person or situation in the world that is still in need of God s love, mercy, or power to heal... then there is still work to be done and an invitation to be given. Do not be surprised if your first invitation receives a negative response. Remember the parable of the sower (Matthew 13:1-8); and how the farmer indiscriminately (to our way of thinking) casts the seeds everywhere (the path, the rocky soil, even amongst the thorns; as well as the good soil). You might be thinking at this point, I invited someone to church once, and it didn t work out ; but I invite you to be courageous and continue, like the good farmer, to keep on sowing invitations in partnership with where ever the Spirit may lead you; and, especially, in unexpected places. This is a spiritual partnership, with two parts. The first part is between you and God. Pray and then invite, and once you have invited, pray some more. We do not know what the seed of these invitations might mean in someone s life, but God does. Even if it does not lead to attendance at our church, it will bear a message of compassion and caring; which may nourish a deeper conversation or provide a nudge in a new direction. We don t know, but God does. The second part of this partnership is between you and our church community. Know that we will be doing our best to provide a warm and welcoming experience in worship, and we will even have a special enhanced coffee hour following each service (including 11am). There will also be a presentation by Urban Farmers following the 9am service, which could be part of your invitation! The main thing is to be open and willing and actively doing your part, to that God can do God s part remember it is call the acts of the apostles. On another note, thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes for our pilgrimage. I am sure that we will have much to share and many stories to tell upon our return from our trip to the Holy Land. My first Sunday back for worship, upon our return will be on April 28; just in time for Bring A Friend To Church Sunday! Taking your prayers with me and keeping you in mine as well! Blessings! Fr. Jeff

As we read in Isaiah 48: 6-7: Now I am revealing new things to you Things hidden and unknown to you Created just now, this very moment. In the fullness of silence and deep contemplation, we discover deeper truth and insights. Gathered in the presence of Christ in a beautiful environment of luminous darkness (candlelight), live music, sacred chants, short readings of scripture and poetry, we rest in the presence of God. Taizé originated about 60 years ago in the small, monastic village of Taizé in France. Today it continues to draw thousands of Christians (mostly young adults) from all over the world. It has quickly spread to Christian churches here and abroad. We welcome everybody!

4 St. Timothy s Vacation Bible School June 24-28, :00am-12:00noon Hello, God! It s ME! At the heart of Christian faith is our relationship with God. Each of us has our own unique relationship with God and one avenue to growth in our relationship with God is through prayer. There are many, many ways to pray and at VBS we are going to experiment with different kinds of prayer: prayers we memorize, prayers we create, prayers set to music, body prayers, spontaneous prayers and silence to name a few! At its most basic and profound level, prayer is nothing more and nothing less than an ongoing conversation with God. This sounds simple enough, doesn t it? But we all know that prayer can be a challenge to incorporate into our everyday lives. Learning to pray and making room to pray can be difficult, but it is important. Talking with - and listening to - God helps us feel God s presence, bask in God s love for us, and be open to hearing what God has to offer us. So, during VBS we will experience a variety of ways to pray! And our hope is that each of us children and adults alike will find prayer practices that work for us and that we can begin to incorporate into our lives. Not all types of prayer work for everyone and we ll talk about our experiences and what we like or don t like about particular forms of prayer. But prayer - in all its many forms can become part of our daily routine and we want to encourage the concept of talking to God and being comfortable doing so. There will be lots of opportunities for children to be creative in the ways they express their thoughts and hopes and feelings to God. So, we invite your child to join us at VBS for a week of fun and fellowship as we explore prayer together! Come and invite your friends to come too! Come to see old friends and make new friends! Come to VBS! ****************************************************************************** Registration deadlines: Counselors April 15 Campers/Volunteers May 15 Registration fee: $85/child for 4 years old through 5 th grade Groups do fill up, so register early! 5 St. Timothy's Book Club Update St. Timothy's Book Club meets on the third Sunday of the month at 12:30 PM in Grace House library. Please join us for some interesting and lively discussions! Here are the upcoming book club selections: April - The Secret Book of Frida Kahlo by F.G. Haghenbeck. When several notebooks were recently discovered among Frida Kahlo's belongings at her home in Mexico City, Mexican novelist, F.G. Haghenbeck was inspired to write this beautifully wrought fictional account of her life. Haghenbeck imagines that, after Frida nearly died when a streetcar's iron handrail pierced her abdomen during a traffic accident, she received one of the notebooks as a gift from her lover, Tina Modotti. Frida called the notebook, "The Hierba Santa Book" (The Sacred Herbs Book) and filled it with memories, ideas and recipes. Haghenbeck takes readers on a magical ride through Frida's passionate life: her long and tumultuous relationship with Diego Rivera, the development of her art, her complex personality, her hunger for experience and her ardent feminism. This stunning narrative also details her remarkable relationships with Georgia O'Keefe, Leon Trotsky, Nelson Rockefeller, Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, Henry Miller and Salvador Dali. Combining rich luscious prose with recipes from "The Hierba Santa Book", Haghenbeck tells the extraordinary story of a woman whose life was as stunning a creation as her art. - Book Description May Hours of Edward by Craig Lancaster. A 39-year-old with Asperger's syndrome and obsessivecompulsive disorder, Edward Stanton lives alone on a rigid schedule in the Montana town where he grew up. His carefully constructed routine includes tracking his most common waking time (7:38 a.m.), refusing to start his therapy sessions even a minute before the appointed hour (10 a.m.) and watching one episode of the 1960's cop show Dragnet each night (10 p.m.). But when a single mother and her nine -year-old son move in across the street, Edward's timetable comes undone. Over the course of a momentous 600 hours, he opens up to his new neighbors and confronts old grievances with his estranged parents. Exposed to both the joys and heartaches of friendship, Edward must ultimately decide whether to embrace the world outside his door or retreat to his solitary ways. Heartfelt and hilarious, this moving novel will appeal to fans of Daniel Keyes' classic, Flowers for Algernon, and to any reader who loves an underdog. - Book Description June - The Round House by Louise Erdrich. One Sunday in the spring of 1988, a woman living on a reservation in North Dakota is attacked. The details of the crime are slow to surface as Geraldine Coutts is traumatized and reluctant to relive or reveal what happened, either to the police or to her husband, Bazil and thirteen-year-old son, Joe. In one day, Joe's life is irrevocably transformed. He tries to heal his mother, but she will not leave her bed and slips into an abyss of solitude. Increasingly alone, Joe finds himself thrust prematurely into an adult world for which he is ill prepared. While his father, who is a tribal judge, endeavors to wrest justice from a situation that defies his efforts, Joe becomes frustrated with the official investigation and sets out with his trusted friends, Cappy, Zack and Angus, to get some answers of his own. Their quest takes them first to the Round House, a sacred space and place of worship for the Ojibwa. And this is only the beginning. Written with undeniable urgency and illuminating the harsh realities of contemporary life in a community where Ojibwa and white live uneasily together, The Round House is a brilliant and entertaining novel, a masterpiece of literary fiction. Louise Erdrich embraces tragedy, the comic, and a spirit world very much present in the lives of her all-too-human characters, and a tale of injustice that is, unfortunately, an authentic reflection of what happens in our own world today. - Book Description

7 God s Hands James 2:14-17 ESV What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Matthew 25:35-40 ESV For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Then the righteous will answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you? Saint Timothy s has a long and proud history of financially supporting a wide variety of charities through our Fruits of the Harvest celebration brings a number of changes that includes a hiatus from FOTH as we celebrate our 60 th anniversary and the installation of Father Frost. The first opportunity is April 28 th at 10:15 as Urban Farmers presents how you can register your fruit trees to be picked and share the bounty with local food banks. Parishioners can also sign up with friends and family to help harvest fruit on certain days this year. The Devil Mountain Run May 5 th is benefitting Discovery Counseling Center. You can sign up to volunteer on race day or run and still make it to the 11am service! God s Kingdom will only come to earth when each one of us makes a personal commitment to truly become God s Hands. 9 Got Fruit? If your backyard fruit trees bear more fruit than you can bear, do we have a giving opportunity for you! This season, St. Timothy's is partnering with The Urban Farmers to participate in their Fruit Gleaning Project, in which excess fruit from backyard urban growers is gathered and distributed to the Food Bank, Loaves and Fishes, Monument Crisis Center and other hunger relief agencies that provide food to folks in need. And Urban Farmers makes it super quick and easy for parishioners to participate in this terrific outreach opportunity here's all you need to do: Register your backyard (or front yard!) fruit trees on the Urban Farmers website at Upon registration, you'll receive a delightful letter welcoming you to the fruit gleaning community and telling you what to expect next. But the general idea is that when your (and neighboring) trees are laden with ripening fruit, Urban Farmers will mobilize volunteers with the Fruit Gleaning Project and send them out to your property and pick (glean) your fruit and, after giving you (the homeowner) all the fruit you want and need, will distribute the excess to those less fortunate in our community. While registering your fruit tree is one of the best ways you can participate in this outreach opportunity, Urban Farmers has other options for volunteering with the Fruit Gleaning Project as well. For example, St. Timothy's parishioners (children included!) may be invited to join or mobilize a team of fruit pickers to self harvest smaller fruit trees in your neighborhood and collect it to be picked up by the Urban Farmers. You can also help a lot by getting the word out to your friends and neighbors about how easy it is to participate and of the tremendous impact this program can make in our community. And lastly, you can plant more fruit trees to bolster resources for healthy, locally grown food for you and your community! Urban Farmers will gladly help with this once-a-year activity, providing low-cost trees to purchase, as well as advice about all phases of planting, caring for, pruning and harvesting your fruit tree. So when you look out your window onto your backyard and begin to see all those peach, plum, pear, apricot and apple blossoms on your fruit trees, remember that before you know it, you'll have a bounty of luscious fruit and chances are you'll have some to spare and share. Pay a visit to the Urban Farmers and register your fruit trees today! 13 Giving Away Your Home, A Brick At a Time Recently I took a donor to lunch who has given 20% of his house to his parish. The upstairs bathroom? The hall closet? The garage? you may well wonder. Let me explain. A person can irrevocably assign a portion (what attorneys refer to as an undivided partial interest ) of the ownership of his or her residence to a charitable organization such as the church. At the same time, the donor can continue to live in his or her home as before and, in fact, will still be responsible for all the same upkeep, real estate tax and insurance expenses as before. Why might a person do this? you may wonder. The answer is: to make a gift to the church upon death while significantly lowering their current income taxes. The twenty-percent of this donor s home is actually the total of a series of percentage gifts made over a period of years. Our finances have become quite tight, the donor confessed. And these gifts to the church every few years have really increased our disposable income by significantly reducing the taxes that we have to pay. Their CPA calculates the percentage gift that will produce the most usable tax deduction. The gift qualifies for a charitable income tax deduction. We are also thrilled to know that one day when our home is sold, the proceeds will create a perpetual endowment to support our parish, added his wife. Here s a gift that can increase current after-tax disposable income while insuring a permanent legacy of love. A portion of your home can make a huge difference when you no longer need it. For more information about giving your home away a brick at a time contact your Gift Planning Officer at Richards@diocal.org or (415) The Rev. Richard L. Friday June 7, 2013 We will make and take Shepherd's Pie for the Graduation Luncheon at OPTIONS RECOVERY SERVICES in Berkeley. We'll need help with purchasing, cooking, transporting, serving and cleaning our kitchen.
