2 Youth Group: Wednesdays 6:00-7:30pm January 9, 16 & 23 Students will explore and discover how God has designed us for new life in Christ. What does that look like? How do we practically and effectively live in the newness God desires for us? Come and start the new year completely transformed by the love and life of Christ! Thank You from UMW The 2018 United Methodist Women Cookie Walk and Craft Fair for missions was a huge success. Thanks so much to our generous congregation for buying, our talented cookie bakers and our imaginative crafters who donated to support missions. You are all a blessing and UMW mission s benefit from your efforts. The Methodist Pew Be sure to sign up to be part of our 2019 congregation-wide study of the 52 Standard Sermons of John Wesley. We ll read one sermon a week, and Pastor David will lead weekly discussions of the sermons we have read. Call the church office ( ) to register, or go to the website to find out more. EPH December Update Joy and laughter filled the Union Congregational UCC fellowship hall as close to fifty moms, dads and children attended our second annual Christmas party. The families were so appreciative! Throughout the meal, families shared stories of gratitude with our hosts and volunteers who joined them. In this situation, the word serve has a double meaning; served in the sense that we served them a meal. But more important, served in that at its core, it is what EPH is. EPH is a ministry of serving homeless families in our community. The refrain, Count your blessings, name them one by one, comes to mind. It is a blessing to be of service to families with children. It is a blessing to be part of the EPH family a family through which we put our faith into action. Throughout this Christmas season, please continue to keep the families we serve in your daily prayers. As they have been a blessing for us, let us continue to be a blessing to them. Staffing Update Sue Mills, our Director of Operations, has been an integral part of our leadership team the last four years. However, Sue and her family will be moving out of state early in We will greatly miss Sue and her passion for our ministry! As such, we will begin efforts to fill this 30 hour per week position as soon as possible. If you are interested in becoming part of the EPH leadership team, please executivedirector@ephgb.org for more information. We are also continuing to look for a part-time maintenance person. If you have handyman skills we d welcome you to our leadership team as well!

Please submit applications to Craig Berken, Personnel Manager, by January 1. Candidates may come from within or outside of the church family. Applications are available in the office. The Building Supervisor is a full time position. Applicants will understand his or her work here as a ministry. Tasks will include planning and coordinating projects, daily maintenance and cleaning, building security, and supervising custodians. Please contact Craig (Craig Berken, cberken@fumcgb.org or ) with any questions. The Good Will Pantry needs paper bags, preferably with handles but will take bags without handles. We can also use plastic bags. Hymn Note: Standing on the Promises R. Kelso Carter, who was both the author of the text and the composer of the music, was a very busy man. Carter attended the Pennsylvania Military Academy, where he was a good student and an excellent athlete. Mr. Carter later became a teacher at the academy of chemistry, natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. Then, the year after he published the present song, he was ordained as a Methodist clergyman. And he later trained and became a medical doctor. Along the way, he wrote many hymns, and co-edited a hymn book. To that is the time he spent a as a sheep rancher, and that he was a published novelist. The text and tune were composed in 1886, while Carter was serving as a professor at the Academy. It has been suggested that the rhythmic martial tone of the hymn s music possibly reflects the composer s military academy experience. The hymn was first published in the year that it was written in the hymnal Songs of Perfect Love. This hymn has been widely used in many evangelical hymnals. The text encourages us to study and stand steadfastly on the teachings of the Word of God, and is based on Ephesians 6:14-17: Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
