1 ST MARTINS LUTHERAN COLLEGE SCHOOL NEWSL ETTER WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 12TH 2018 W ebsite: I office@stmartins.sa.edu.au Principal: Mr Alan Connah CHRISTMAS THE SEASON OF HOPE - A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL With the end of the school year already here, Christmas will be upon us in just a few short days. So, I wanted to take this last opportunity to visit one of our St Martin Spirit themes one last time: Hope. The prophet Isaiah announced the coming Christ child more than 600 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem, saying: For a child has been born to us; A son has been given to us; Authority rests upon his shoulders; And he is named Wonderful counsellor Mighty God Everlasting Father Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) These were words of hope for a people who were living in times of conflict and exile. They are also words of hope for us today. In the Bible names are often used to provide information about a person. According to Isaiah, Jesus would be the Wonderful Counsellor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father and the Prince of Peace. This provides us with a very strong picture of what the Christ child would be. Wonderful Counsellor In Hebrews 4:15-16 Paul reminds us that Jesus went through everything we will ever go through, but he did so without sinning. Therefore, Jesus, by becoming human, is able to lead us where he has already gone before us. This gives us hope. Mighty God When the prophet Isaiah called Jesus the Mighty God, he was pointing to the fact that Jesus would come and live amongst us to show us that everything is in God s control; God is mighty and will achieve His will, in His way and in His time. And as God s beloved children, we can rest in His provision for us. This gives us hope. Everlasting Father The eternal Christ, who we best understand through the person of Jesus, protects and provides for us like a Father, through His death and resurrection on our behalf. This gives us hope. Prince of Peace Isaiah reminds us that peace is an essential part of God s nature; He is a God of peace, not chaos. Jesus came to bring the peace of God to this broken world; a peace that passes all understanding. This is ongoing. Jesus is working moment by moment, day by day, changing wounded hearts into channels of peace. And He invites us to participate in his work. This gives us hope. So, as we break up for the Summer holidays, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the whole St Martins community God s richest blessings for this Christmas season. May the celebration of the coming of the Christ into our world as an active participant, fill you with hope; hope for each moment of each day, and hope for eternity in the presence of our loving Father. We pray for travelling mercies for those who will be leaving the Limestone Coast during the break, and for God s blessings as you and your families enjoy time together.
