2 FROM THE DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT Are We Ready To Go In a New Direction? Friends, as we embark on another Annual Conference year, I give thanks for the opportunity to begin my second year sharing in ministry with you. Last year was a learning experience in many ways for me, but also a blessing as I have met so many people and shared in wonderful times of worship and church life with countless numbers of folks. In the coming year, I hope to spend the majority of my time focusing on our mission of winning people to Christ, seeing people others do not see, transforming lives and changing the world. Rev. Charles Kyker, senior pastor of Christ United Methodist Church in Hickory, North Carolina, reminded us at Annual Conference of Jesus call in Luke 19:10, Jesus came to seek and save the lost. I am worn out with declining numbers and a sense of hopelessness. We serve a risen Savior and it is time to act and respond to Christ s call upon the church. As we move through this Conference year, many new opportunities for training and resources will be provided for you; new possibilities for your church to partner with other United Methodist Churches in developing Parish ministries will be offered and suggested. I am looking hard at starting new churches in the Kingsport District one in Sullivan and one Hawkins County. The day of twenty years of declining membership, declining worship attendance, a decline in professions of faith and business as usual is over. I want to encourage clergy and laity alike to be bold and passionate about being the Apostolic Church, remembering our baptism and the words we say in the liturgy of Holy Communion. Enclosed in this newsletter is the worship attendance for our churches this past Easter Sunday. In 2009, the Kingsport District averaged almost 4,500 people in worship in our churches on Sunday morning. This past Easter, we had over 7,500 worshippers. What would it take for your church to average the number you had on Easter every Sunday in 2011 or 2012? God showed you that you can do it. Begin to dream dreams and to have vision for not what is but what can be and then get your faith community together and begin to pray how God would lead you forward and then respond to God s leading. To be frankly honest, there will be a need for many of our churches to make changes and to look at their current reality and to see that they must do things differently. We don t exist to save our churches, but to save lives and proclaim the Gospel in whatever forms that is presented us. At times this is challenging, fearful and overwhelming, but if we truly believe the words of Jesus in Matthew 6:10 May your Kingdom Come, may your will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven, we will seek to bring God s Kingdom to the earth. Each time a life is changed the world is changed. In turn, God s Kingdom is changed for eternity. It seems we get caught up in our differences, social principals and political agendas. If you don t like the social principals, there is a way to possibly change them, but United Methodist has been about bringing social change ever since John Wesley began the Methodist movement. The issue becomes we want someone else to do the work and then complain when it doesn t go our way and pick up our toys and go home. If we will all come to the table and focus on the mission of Christ, it will be amazing what can happen. I am praying we can do this in the coming year and turn anger into seeing possibilities, bring hope to the hopeless, grace and love to those who need it so much. I pray for you and ask that you pray for me as we partner together in ministry. On a personal, Nancy and I want to thank everyone for your prayers concerning her recent accident and surgery. She is doing well and it will just be a slow process of rehabilitation. Your support and actions of love have been greatly appreciated and blessed to be a part of your lives and you ours. Let s keep praying and see what God does. The best is yet to come! In Christ, David PS-every pastor along with two or three lay leaders from each church needs to be present if possible for the workshop with Dr. Lew Parks on July 16 and 17. Information and how to sign up is contained in this newsletter. This is another tool for you to bring transformation and vision to your church and ministry. 2

7 WHAT S THE NEWS FROM ANNUAL CONFERENCE? Just Wondering You have got to be kiddin On the First Vote!! By Voice Vote?? Only three legitimate questions!!? Folks we have a new budget formula. We will send (give) (tithe) 10% of all undesignated church income to the Holston Conference. It will start February 2011and will be submitted monthly along with a new form. Listen don t be trying to think of ways to make the income designated!!! Genesis 28:22, Deuteronomy 16:17. Hurrah and Amen!!! The Francis Asbury Award for higher education went to Rev. Jerry Everley, retiring director of the Wesley Foundation at ETSU. May the Holy Spirit stay with him. Regrets and hurt (need lots of prayer): Holston Conference lost or combined some more churches last year - one new church and active plans for one more ongoing. We ain t gainin. An Oscar for video production State of the Church report. (Bishop Swanson and Conference Lay Leader, Mary Ruth Richards) THERE ARE POWERFUL MINISTRIES IN HOLSTON CONFERENCE UMC. Are we there Kingsport? Bad Taste? No, just plain wrong! Cal Turner, CEO, Dollar General Stores your choice of wit did not fit. It s personal. Rev. Adam McKee, our Grandmothers are together. It was wonderful to be reminded to let selfish opinions go Let it Go, Baby. From across the water where all needs are immeasurable, Boo and Phyllis Hankins brought some good news and thanks from Sudan. (The need is greater than ever.) $150,000 and counting from the conference offering! Phyllis was my Pastor 5 years ago and she took the time to set with me and ask about people she remembered from our congregation. Ain t that what it s all about REMEMBERING JUNE 13-16, 2010!!! Kingsport District Be Proud! Doug Carson, Lay Member to Annual Conference from Fall Branch UMC ================ The 2010 Annual Conference was one of the smoothest conferences I have ever attended. I was particularly impressed with the challenges presented by Rev. Charles Kyker and Rev. Candace Lewis. They laid out growth plans for the church with the main focus on reaching people outside the church. Rev. Kyker said we need to reach, equip and celebrate to have a healthy church. Our God is a God of second chances and so many people have lost their way and need a new chance to know and love the God we worship. It is our job as a Church to help make this happen. Remember, Jesus is the foundation of the Church. Charles Weaver, District Member-at-Large, Member of Salem UMC ================== The scheduling of the ordination service on Sunday set the tone for the conference. The message given by Bishop Carder was on target for the ordinands as well as clergy and laity in attendance. -when we get off course in our journey, take time to remember our baptism and that we are a child of God first. Ministry visual reports showed us what was written in the Book of Reports. I especially enjoyed the State of the Holston Conference co-led by our Lay Leader and Bishop Swanson an excellent training tool to use in local churches. We will more likely remember what we ve seen than what we ve heard we learn in different ways and I think that was applied to this conference. The leadership session shared by Bishop Carder and the CEO of the Dollar General Store was open and honest, a down to earth presentation in a creative dialogue about servant leadership. John Tate led us through the vote on tithing with transparency and clarity. Nancy Tate, District Member-at-Large, Member at First Broad Street UMC 7

8 I think that the biggest realization I bring from Conference is the amazing amount of hard work that a lot of people do in this conference. Folks are working in a vast array of different ministries, each bringing their particular expertise to the table to advance the kingdom. It may be Danny Howe and Boo and Phyllis Hankins in the field doing hands-on mission work. But it is also John Tate bringing his expertise to the financial aspects of running the conference. Each doing what they know how to do. The second thing I bring home from Conference is the amazing groups of young people, working hard when they could just as easily be spending their summer vacation like normal teen-agers. The future of the Church is, indeed, very bright. Harry Ennis, District Member-at-Large, Member at Glen Alpine UMC ==================== Two things I very much enjoyed about my first Annual Conference experience, the early morning worship services in the Chapel and the "State of the Conference" Video by Bishop Swanson and Mary Ruth Richards. Worship is a wonderful way to start the day and center oneself on Christ and the services were well designed and led. I am hoping to obtain a copy of the Video and share it with my congregation. What an awesome overview of all the exciting ways God is offering Himself to our church and through our church! Cindy Muncie, District Member-at-Large, Member at Glen Alpine UMC ==================== Here are two thoughts from Ken Carder's dialog with Cal Turner. If you are in over your head, congratulations; Don't measure: It doesn't matter how many are at church, but it matters if the ones there heard the gospel. We can accomplish much if we pull together as reflected in "offerings" received at AC when over $237,000 (and counting) was given for Sudan, Liberia and Zimbabwe through money, backpacks, health kits, tools and plumbing supplies. This figure also includes the Change for Children. Carol Anderson, District Member-at-Large, Member at Colonial Heights UMC ==================== The conference was very inspirational with dynamic worship interspersed throughout each day. The speakers were very interesting and thought provoking. The live band added a well-received and enthusiastic aspect to the conference. I believe that the approved change in the apportionment formula to a "tithe" system was a landmark decision that emphasizes the faith of our conference. This conference was the most enthusiastic and noncontroversial conference that I have attended in the last eleven years. I learned that there is indeed a new stigma associated with being the "boss". I am anxious to learn how the different apportionment formulas of the various Districts will be affected by the new Holston Conference formula. I left the conference re-energized and optimistic that we collectively are embarking upon a new and exciting journey in our mission to "Offer them Christ." I look forward to next year's conference with great expectation of reported improvements spawned by the actions of this conference. Ross Strickler, District Member-at-Large, Member at Kendricks Creek UMC 8
