We didn't have a 90 day in July or August, but now we're breaking records. I just played two consecutive outings in is heat and many people are wondering why I am still alive. But, alas, you are still stuck wi me. In Men's Group, we talked about ings at make us happy, at please us, at fulfill our lives. The beautiful days of e past week or two make it easy to find ings at God has done in our lives. I saw a rainbow, double at times, at lasted twenty minutes while playing golf. One of e players took a picture at places us and our cart and e end of e rainbow...pot of gold? If you see ings like at, or enjoy e weaer we're having, extending our gardens and allowing us to keep pools open, and do not recognize ere is someone behind is...i ink you need to look deeper into yourself, and say, SELF, ink about it. I spoke wi e owner of a trucking company, and he says freight is building up on e docks, wi too few trucks and truckers to move it...a sign at e economy is booming. The natural disasters in e Islands, Puerto Rico, as well as Florida and Texas are being attended to wi as many people and services at e government and private entities, and charities can muster. Yet we hear at e NFL, bo owners and players, are more in e news an e desperate people who need help. Ivanka's high heels made headlines, wi as much or more detail an Kim Jong-Un's rockets. I personally wouldn't care if she wore snowshoes and showed up. I wish I had an answer to e Kim situation. I said last mon, pray, wi much ought in your mind and your heart, for ose at need help, for ose who need direction, and for all of us who need God's presence in our lives. God Bless. John Torelli Council President

2 2 The Messenger s Voice October 2017 Spotlight On...Katie Armstrong This mon, we focus on our Fellowship Trustee who was elected in May to follow Gladys Cox, who did an outstanding job in e position. Katie is responsible for organizing refreshments for e special events at we celebrate during e year including First Communion, Confirmation and New Member receptions. The Fellowship Committee also organizes e Soup and Bread suppers and assists wi pot lucks roughout e year. As any event at Our Redeemer is planned, Katie and her team are an important part of e organization. Katie was born and raised in Scotia. She graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School and attended e College of St. Rose where she obtained a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and a concentration in Human Resources. Shortly after graduation, Katie began working for e Research Foundation for SUNY, where she continues to work as a Benefits Administrator. Katie joined Our Redeemer in 2010 and was married to her husband, Nate, at Our Redeemer. Their son Gavin was e last child to be Baptized at ORLC by Pastor Meyer before he retired. In addition to her duties at Our Redeemer, Katie really enjoys being a mom. She and Nate love watching Gavin grow and spending time togeer as a family. How lucky we are to have Katie as a part of our family and may God bless e Armstrong family now and forever. 3 3 The Messenger s Voice October 2017 A Message From e Pastor For just over a year now, your Congregation Council has been reflecting on who we are, what gifts God has given us, and where are we going as children of God here at Our Redeemer. Some of e ings we have talked about are no brainers, ings we are doing already at we want to continue. Some are hopes and dreams of one or more people, who see possibilities. Some conversations start out of concerns we have about what is NOT happening or seems to be in decline. All have been good conversations. We know all ings are possible in Jesus' name. But we have concerns about what happens here at e Church, or wi our ministries, or oer ings at seem to fall under our "control." But ey are not under our control, just our responsibility to do in Jesus' name. So e word for e day becomes "intentional." There is concern about reaching and retaining our middle and high school you. So, we are intentionally beginning to meet as a group once a mon. We'll talk about Jesus for sure, and life in general, what it means to be a Christian in school, or on e soccer field, or in relationships. And is will be a time for just e kids and eir pastor to meet, talk, be goofy, be serious, and grow. Intentional time spent. You and eir friends are encouraged to come, 7pm, first Sunday of each mon. Sunday School has been concerned about reaching more kids for Christian Education. After developing several ways to reach our current children and eir families, ey are reaching out into e community in new ways to invite more kids in. Neighbor kids, friends of members, all are welcome to come and learn more about Jesus. Intentionally inviting oers to come and see Jesus. All are welcome. Bob Abrams should have been a preacher, as he was certainly one during announcements on 9/24. He reminded us all at ANY time ere is someing going on here at ORLC, we can invite friends and neighbors to come. Not just to worship, not just for e fund-raising. Any time. Any time we can get people into our building to see what we are doing, to welcome em, share wi em our enusiasm for ministry here is a good ing. And as I shared wi council, I know a lot of people in Scotia, almost all of em members here. YOU all know a lot more people who are not! Intentionally inviting oers to come and see what we do here is what Jesus would want you to do. Where can you be more intentional about how you live as a Christian? In how you reach out to oers? In how you share Jesus wi oers? Always good questions to ponder. As council and committees come up wi goals and directions for us at ORLC, we will need to walk togeer intentionally to accomplish ese goals. These will be ings at we see we can do here, based on e gifts we have and e needs of our congregation and community. We won't be doing ese ings because we ink it's a good idea, or we ought to do em. We do em because we are called to do ese ings in Jesus' name, because of who Jesus is and who he has shaped us to be. Be intentional for Jesus EACH day, as we live serving him! -Pastor Dan BY REQUEST! After our summer Bible Study in e evening, ere was a request to continue. I also had a request to have a time to talk about current events kinds of ings. So in October we ll have two sessions called What In The World?!?! at 7 pm Tuesday, rd Oct. 3 and Thursday, Oct 26. Come to eier or bo. After e first of e year, we ll get an evening Bible Study going probably twice a mon. Talk to me about any questions.

4 4 The Messenger s Voice October 2017 From Our Worship Trustee Leaves may be falling but Reformation is springing up everywhere! Throughout October, Our Redeemer will become rosier wi e reformation spirit. I hope you run into people who ask why e church, inside and out, is decked out in red. 500 years doesn't happen every day, you know! Please join us as we celebrate our founding and legacy every Sunday. Invite a friend for Reformation Sunday on October 29 and don't forget to WEAR RED. Soon, time and talent surveys will be distributed, so if you have any questions about e ins and outs of certain worship positions or e time commitment involved, please ask! If you have any suggestions for Advent or Christmas worship, please join us at our next Worship & Music Committee meeting at 7 pm on Tuesday, November 7. Linda DeBraccio Worship & Music Trustee The Next Step for Our Time and Talents As was indicated in last mon's stewardship article, e eme of our Stewardship Campaign is Fall is "Take e Next Step." The idea is to ink of ways in which we can break out of e old, familiar patterns of our stewardship and do someing new. Well, a good place to start is wi our Time and Talent survey! I must admit at our old Time and Talent survey was raer intimidating; it had many pages and literally hundreds of different items. Moreover, once we received e surveys back from e congregation, it took a long time to compile e responses. Even e children's survey had multiple pages and dozens of items! It was clearly time for us to take e next step wi e way in which we surveyed e congregation for eir areas of interest. Happily, Pastor Dan had a welcome suggestion. He recommended at we switch to using a variation of e very simple Time and Talent survey form used by Good Shepherd Lueran Church in Loudonville (where Pastor Pamela Hoh is currently serving). Instead of numerous pages, e survey now consists of a single two-sided sheet of paper. The idea is for people to simply indicate e general areas of our church life in which ey would like to serve. Once is is done, e results will be given to e chairperson of each committee. This should not be e time-consuming effort it was before. The heads of our various committees will contact e people in e congregation who expressed a general interest in e type of work performed by his or her committee. The concept is, raer an overwhelm people wi a lot of detail in e survey, to simply let people express eir general areas of interest and let e committee heads take over from ere. The new surveys will be handed out on nd October 22, and will also be available roughout e Stewardship Campaign, which runs rough November 19. So be sure to take e next step wi your stewardship! Fred Hutchison Stewardship Trustee Christian Education The first day of Sunday School was a success!! We welcomed a new student is year and it was so very nice to see so many children return! The Sunday School staff, children and eir families had a delicious breakfast before creating eir own rainbow paintings and learning about e story of e silver dollar.

5 5 The Messenger s Voice October 2017 It is a blessing at we have such a dedicated team of women who are committed to guiding e religious education of our young people. Having just returned from e Women of e ELCA conference, I can't help but ink about e sermon is morning, when Bishop Marie Jerge asked e congregation to "ink of one woman who helped guide your fai". The number of women who shared at e woman who helped guide em e most was eir Sunday School teacher was inspiring. It proves at religious education leaves a lasting impression. It also had me inking of e sermon here at Our Redeemer on e first day of Sunday School (September 10 ) where Pastor Dan shared "good communication results in resolve and keeping e church family whole. He en asked e congregation to ask oers, "What can we do to restore your fai in our church?" So, I ask all of you, especially ose who may not have returned yet is year, what can we do to restore your fai in our Sunday School? Your church family misses you and we hope at you will return. We have so many wonderful activities and lessons planned is year. We hope to see more children join our Sunday School and pray at oers return. In e coming weeks, we will be spreading e good news of our Sunday School at e German Festival on October 15 and on Halloween night. We hope at you will consider spreading e news as well. Please remember to "share" any Facebook posts you see to help encourage oers to visit our church family and feel free to pass out a Sunday School ticket to a family you may know who would like to have some fun while spending an hour wi us on a Sunday morning. Tickets will be available in e Fellowship Hall. Aimee Pachucki Education Trustee Coming up in ACES Since we are celebrating e 500 Anniversary of e Reformation is year, Our Redeemer has ordered a series entitled "A Return to Grace: Luer's Life and Legacy." This series consists of a number of minute video segments taken from a full-leng film on Martin Luer of e same title which will be presented at e Regal Clifton Park Cinemas, 22 Clifton Country Road in Clifton Park at 7 pm on nd Monday, October 2. One video segment will be shown each ACES class, to be followed by discussion. I am looking forward to is series, which I trust will provide us wi some ought-provoking ACES classes on Sunday morning between services. The only drawback is at is series will not arrive until sometime in November, and we would really like to get our ACES classes for is year up and running before en. Therefore, we will have a series on selected topics and parables from e Gospel of Luke, which will continue until e series on Martin Luer arrives. Our first ACES class will be on Sun., October 8, between services. Hope to see you en! (Dates are subject to change.) Fred Hutchison From our Fellowship Trustee Pumpkin time is just around e corner even ough it doesn't feel like it wi all e warm weaer we have been having!! It's a great time of year to take e family on a hay ride and pick apples and pumpkins. German Fest will be October 15 from 11:30-3:30 and e cost is $ The meal will include fresh-made bratwurst & knockwurst, sauerkraut & German potato salad, fresh baked-rye bread, dessert and beverage. Pre-sale tickets are now available.

6 6 The Messenger s Voice October 2017 On October 29, we will be celebrating Confirmation as two of our you (Michael Bassi and Molly Holman) become confirmed members of Our Redeemer Lueran Church. The reception will be held at 10 am and ey will be confirmed at e 11 am service. Please plan to attend. We still need volunteers to host coffee fellowship. Please consider signing up if you haven't already. The responsibilities for hosting fellowship include setting out a snack and clean-up. Some great snack ideas are fruit, cheese and crackers or baked goods. The clean-up starts around 11:00 and includes emptying/rinsing out e coffee pots, disposing of all food and wiping off tables and kitchen counters. If you have any questions, please see me. Katie Armstrong Fellowship Trustee It's Party Time Please join us Saturday, November 4 from 1:30-4:30, for a FUN, FAMILY event. We will be having a birday party from in honor of Martin Luer in e Fellowship Hall. This will be a costume party wi a medieval eme. There will be games, crafts, dancing, refreshments, a hobby horse jousting event, and a special presentation about Martin Luer. Find your best medieval costume (king, queen, prince, princess, knight, commoner, court jester, priest, nun, monk, etc.) and your root beer mug or tankard, and join us for a fun afternoon. Look up your family coat of arms and bring a printout of it to e festivities. An invitation to is event is included in is newsletter. We encourage you to share it wi friends, family, neighbors, and/or post it where e community will know ey are welcome to join us. Gladys Cox News From e O Team Calling all people who like to greet Trick- or-treaters!!! We will be open for trick-or- treaters on st Tuesday, October 31 and WE NEED YOU. If you like to see e costumes, see e sweet faces of e little ones and scary faces of many oers, we would like your help to pass out candy &/or treats to visitors from 4-8 pm. This is a marvelous way to let families in e community know we are here. Donations of candy and non-candy treats are requested. The Prayer Chain team continues to hold requests in prayer whenever prayer requests are made. The next two articles, "Eyes Wide Open" & Fiber Arts Ministry are extensions of e Outreach Ministries we do here at Our Redeemer. 7 7 The Messenger s Voice October 2017 Eyes Wide Open The Outreach Committee has invited Debbie Fowler to speak at Our Redeemer on e subject of human trafficking on Tuesday, October 24 beginning at 7 pm. Debbie is dedicated to bringing awareness of human trafficking; create collaborative action in e Albany Capital District and sharing resources wi oers who are also dedicated to working togeer to fight is crime. She is a wife, a moer and grandmoer, an auor and an artist. She is very passionate in whatever she does. Upon learning of e realities of human trafficking, not only globally but here in our own backyard, she purposed to bring awareness to e community rough public speaking opportunities in schools, colleges, businesses and local government. Anyone who knits, crochets, quilts, or sews is invited to join us e last Tuesday of alternating mons for an evening of conversation as we work on projects. We have knitting needles, crochet hooks, and yarn available for ose desiring to learn how to knit or crochet. Please watch e bulletin for e date of our next meeting. Gladys Cox Evangelism and Social Ministry I have been involved in a couple of conversations recently about helping oers and evangelism. There are many ways to help people far away and in our own community. There are all sorts of charities, from helping victims of natural disasters to feeding people who can't afford nutritious food, just to name a few. Helping is good, right and what we believe God would have us do. The word evangelical means to share e good news. How can we, as Lueran Christians, help oers and share e good news at we live and give in response to a grace-filled God? When we participate in one of e social ministries at Our Redeemer supports we can be intentional about sharing our fai. We can hand out information about our congregation, share a word of comfort, share our fai or wear a "God's Work, Our Hands" tee shirt while participating in a ministry. Let people know at we are sharing not just because it's e right ing to do, but because God loves and cares for us all. After giving is some ought, I plan to be intentional about evangelizing during our annual German Fest by displaying not only my well-worn "God's Work, Our Hands" tee shirt but also by sharing e opportunities at our

Linda DeBraccio One more ing I (Pastor Dan) mentioned at Council has been and will be working on goals for Our Redeemer. YOU CAN HELP! Here are a few of e questions we have reflected on to help us look more closely at who we are and what God might be calling us to do: What are we most proud of here at Our Redeemer? What are we doing now at we want to keep doing as far a ministry, worship, events, or oer ings? What gifts do we have as a congregation (bo buildings/grounds & people/ministry gifts)? How well do we know our community? How can we improve at? How well does our community know us? How can we improve at? What are e needs of our community? Where is God calling us to grow and serve here in Scotia or around e world? Talk about some of ese questions as you gaer wi your family for supper, or talk wi ORLC sisters or broers on e phone or during fellowship. Ask friends in e community what ey know of our church. Listen to eir responses and see what you can learn about us and our community. Try not to be too embarrassed if ey didn't know you went to church! And of course, invite em to an event or worship service sometime soon! Then share your oughts and findings wi one or more of ose serving on our congregation council! Thanks for your help!
