DYNAMICS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Church of Praise JB (24 Jan 2016, S1) INTRODUCTION Why this Study? 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 1
DYNAMICS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT What: The Course This study focuses on the biblical and experiential understanding of the person and work of the Holy Spirit in salvation, sanctification and service. Special attention will be given to teachings on the baptism in the Holy Spirit, the fruit and gifts of the Spirit and mission. Why: The Goal Part of the course outcome is that you will be able to recognise, appreciate and appropriate the vital role and work of the Holy Spirit in your personal life, vocation and church today. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 2
Study Question 1 What are the five reasons for this study of the dynamics of the Holy Spirit? Why is this study important to you? How do believers treat the Holy Spirit today? Suggest ways to bridge the gaps. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 3
A. Why Study the Holy Spirit? 1. His Prominence in Scripture a. The prominence of the Spirit in the Old Testament. The O.T. menkons the Holy Spirit 88 Kmes; 23 OT books refer to the Holy Spirit b. The prominence of the Spirit in the New Testament. The N.T. menkons the Holy Spirit 264 Kmes 60 or more ref in the gospels; 57 in Acts; 132 in the epistles 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 4
2. The Importance of the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Several reasons:- 2.1 The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Believer a. His involvement in us becoming ChrisKans regenerakon (Jn 3:3-8) b. His presence in our lives as ChrisKans. indwelling (Rom 8:9), c. His empowerment upon believers (Acts 1:8) 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 5
2.2 The Reality of the Holy Spirit Then This concerns the Holy Spirit in the life of the early church. a. They were conscious of the presence of a divine person among them, leading & guiding them into truth. b. The Holy Spirit himself focuses a_enkon on Christ and seeks to glorify Him (Jn 15:26; 16:14). c. He is recognized as a real disknct Person with intelligence, feeling and will. (Rom 8:27; 1Cor 2:10; 12:11; Eph 1:17; 4:20; Isa 11:2; 63:10; Acts 13:2). 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 6
2.3 The Role of the Holy Spirit as the Paraklete a. His role as the Helper or Comforter (Jn 16) It is primarily through the Holy Spirit that we experience God and feel the presence within, giving a special tangibility to the ChrisKan life. The current culture stresses the experienkal part, therefore would be relevant and meaningful. b. The role concerning Truth and Error i. He is the source of God s Truth...2Pet 1:21 ii. He is the subject of much Error gids 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 7
3. The Age of The Holy Spirit Today a. We are living in the age of the Holy Spirit, whereby the Holy Spirit s work is seen to be more prominent. b. If we are to be in touch with God today, then we must become acquainted with the Holy Spirit s ackvity. Edwin N. Palmer says For the eternal Spirit of God is the source of the Chris@an s spiritual life; both its origin and con@nua@on. The Holy Spirit is essen@al for many other vital aspects of life besides regenera@on and sanc@fica@on. (Pg 9 Holy Spirit ) c. The Resurgence of Pneumatology today 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 8
4. The Neglected Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit has been the most neglected doctrine of the church.(past) It is only unkl more recent Kmes that there has been an increased in the study of the work of the Holy Spirit. The Pentecostal and CharismaKc movements together with the modern day spirit movements have created a greater awareness and hunger in the church and the ChrisKan s life. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 9
5. The Pentecostal Heritage a. The Pentecostal heritage of the BapKsm in the Holy Spirit. b. The CharismaKc movements have to a certain extent watered down the Pentecostal s doctrine of Spirit s bapksm. c. There are also Pentecostal churches who have lost or ignore their heritage. d. The concerns of receiving insufficient emphasis on Pentecostal experience in ministerial training. e. The contribukon of the Pentecostal revival to the contemporary church today. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 10
IMPORTANT However, a word of warning is needed here: the Spirit is not an object of human study in the same way that for instance the objects of physical sciences are. In fact, we can say that the Spirit, rather than being an object of our scrukny, is the One who searches us. (Read 1Cor 2:10-11) 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 11
Application 1: How About You? Identify the major spiritual encounters in your life. Think back to what God was doing in each of those encounters. Can you identify a major work of the Spirit in your life? 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 12
Church of Praise, JB (24 Jan 16, S2) DYNAMICS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THE BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Who is the Holy Spirit? 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 13
CLASS EXERCISE Look up the following Scriptures and explain: The Spirit does things that only a person can do. Acts 8:29 - spoke; 11:12 commanded; 13:2 call; 13:4 sends; 16:6-7 forbids; Rev 2:7, 11 speaks; 22:17 invites; Gen 6:3 strives; The Spirit can only suffer as only a person can suffer ( Isa 63:10 - vexed; Heb 10:29 - insulted; Mt 12:31 blasphemed; Acts 5:3 lied to; Acts 7:51 resisted; Eph 4:20 vexed or grieved. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 14
Study Question 2 Describe the work or role of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. What is most significant in the Pentateuch and Judges? 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 15
Introduc>on The name Holy Spirit tends to convey a cold even remote image. Ader all what is Spirit? The connotakons of vagueness, mystery and insubstankality did in fact express what many ChrisKans experience. The Holy Spirit is seen to be distant and impersonal by comparison with the Father & the Son. If we consider only Acts 1:8, we might think that the Spirit is merely a power, strength coming from God, a blessing He grants to us. However, we know He is more than this. What has God disclosed? In the face of many and conflickng voices, what is the ChrisKan to make of the Holy Spirit? Where shall we begin? The Bible 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 16
B. THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT 1. Two- Fold Understanding. We can analyse the OT material about the Spirit of God in two ways: 1.1 Old Testament ThemaKcally a. ConnecKon between Spirit and CreaKon. b. ConnecKon between Spirit and the EcstaKc. c. ConnecKon between Spirit and wisdom. d. Contrast between divine and human spirit, signified in the term Holy Spirit (Isa 63:10f) 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 17
1.2 Old Testament Historically Following the chronology, a somewhat different picture emerges. a. Spirit comes to have a Messianic dimension before the monarchy. b. Under the monarchy the language almost disappears. c. Spirit language is a form of polikcal discourse found in the exile. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 18
2. Works of the Holy Spirit in OT 2.1 Empowerment - The Holy Spirit came upon the people to empower them for specific tasks (Judges 6:34; 1Chron 12:18; 2Chron 24:20) a. InterpretaKon of dreams (Gen 41:38; Dan 5:11) b. Special skills (Ex 31:1-7) c. Prophecy (1Sam 10:6, Ezek 11:5, Joel 2:28) 2.2 CreaKon - The Spirit of God was involved in creakng the universe (Gen 1:2; Ps 33:6; Isa 40:12,13) 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 19
2.3 Wisdom - The Spirit of God gave wisdom (Prov 8; Isa 11:1-3) 2.4 Translate people The Spirit of God moved people geographically (Ezek 2:2; 3:12-15; 11:24; 37:1, 14; 43:5) 2.5 The Spirit of God brings righteousness (Ps 143:10; Isa 4:4) 2.6 The Spirit of God gives life (Gen 2:7; Job 33:4) 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 20
2.7 The Spirit of God sustains life. (Psalms 104:10-15; 30) 2.8 The Spirit of God takes life (Isa 40:7; Job 34:14-15) 2.9 The Spirit of God is omnipresent. (Ps 139:7-10) 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 21
3. The Holy Spirit in the Pentateuch Ruach is used to rep a wide range of expression. It can mean wind, breath or spirit. It is used in relakon to nature, the life of animals and man, and God. According to Horton, there are at least 33 shades of meaning that the word may have in different contents. We ll look at six (6) main usages: 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 22
3.1 The Ruach of God a. The root meaning: Wind or movement of air Refers to the atmosphere, especially the wind which is invisible, irresiskble power, somekmes raging and destruckve (Gen 8:1: Ex 10:13, 19; 14:21; Num 11:31) b. When used to refer to an impersonal concept The strong wind of the storm, the raging blast from the desert, like the one that divided the Red Sea at the Exodus (Ex 14:21). This strong wind is a powerful image of divine strength. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 23
c. Referring to breath or breath of life. Gen 6:17; 7:22 combines the two words, spirit and breath to mean the spirit of the breath of life. This verse shows the close relakonship between spirit and breath. d. Referring to the person or self This is a natural development for the idea of the breath of life. So, ruach is translated as referring to the human spirit. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 24
e. Referring to God himself or His Spirit Ruach is used to speak of God as present and ackve in the world and in parkcular among human beings. Can be used to mean God s arm, hand, finger, face, name, glory, will, word. f. Referring to the Holy Spirit The revelakon of the Holy Spirit in the OT is implicit. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 25
3.2 The Crea>ve Ac>vity of the Spirit (Gen 1:2) Gen 1:2 ref to the presence and ackvity of the Spirit of God in creakon. The conknued working of the creakon is also a_ributed to the Spirit (Job 26:13; Isa 32:15; Ps 33:6; 100:30; Isa 40:12-13). Besides, Gen 1 shows that God is the subject of the creakon story. God created, God saw, God called, God made, and God blessed. The whole picture is one of God in ackon. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 26
3.3 The Crea>on of Man and the Breath of Life (Gen 2:7) In both Gen 1:26 and 2:7, it is reasonable to conclude that the Holy Spirit was involved in the creakon of man. The phrase breathe of life indicated the source of life which is God. It is simple God s breathe or spirit which produces life, which gave man his life. Not just physical life, but also the Spirit also imparts to believers the spiritual offered by the Son to those who believe. So both in first and second man/adam, the Spirit was ackvely involved. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 27
3.4 The Flood (Gen 6:3) My Spirit will not contend with man forever (6:3) The word contend has two meanings. a. First, it refers to abide, meaning that God s Spirit will not dwell in a man who is sinful for God s Spirit is holy. b. It may mean rule or judge. This means that God s Spirit acts as a judge of the world. Together with the Word, the Spirit instructs, exhorts, reprove, correct and convict men. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 28
3.5 The Charisma>c Ac>vity of the Spirit Another work of the Holy Spirit seen in the Pentateuch was the conveying of certain necessary skills for various tasks. Examples: a. Gids of AdministraKon Joseph and Pharaoh (Gen 41:38); Moses and Seventy Elders (Num 11:25); and Joshua (Deut 34:9) b. Skills for various tasks Bezalel (Ex 31:3-5) Zerubbabel in the rebuilding of the Temple (Zech 4:6); and Aaron 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 29
4. The Holy Spirit in the Historical Wri>ngs There is also no specific menkoning of the Holy Spirit in the historical wrikngs except for the book of Judges. 4.1 Survey of the hist. of Israel in historical wrikngs a. Joshua Period of Conquest b. Judges Period of Dark Ages c. Samuel/Kings Period of the Monarchy d. Kings/Chronicles Period of Division e. Dan/Ezek Exilic Period f. Ezra/Neh/Est Post Exilic Period 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 30
4.2 Joshua Need to keep in step with the Spirit, inquire from the Lord and not to take things for granted leaning on our own understanding. 4.3 God s chosen Judges The understanding of power is not from earthly establishments. They need wisdom, understanding and knowledge by the Spirit to judge and rule the people and to restrain idolatry. SalvaKon was the real purpose of what the Spirit was doing through the Judges not just mere victory over enemies. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 31
4.4 The Anointed Ones: Israel s Kings The Spirit also endowed the early kings of Israel with special capabilikes. Most of them were anointed with oil which is symbolic of the anoinkng of the Holy Spirit. Examples: 1 Kgs 19:16; Exod 30:30, 40:13-15; Lev 8:12, 30; 16:32; 1 Sam 10:1; 16:3, 13; 2 Sam 5:3; 1 Kgs 1:34; 19:15; 2 Kgs 9:3. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 32
a. Saul Examples: He was anointed to be the first king of Israel. He prophesied, sang, was a changed man, and experienced the coming of the Spirit upon him for immediate needs. b. David David was also anointed. In Psalms, he explained the importance of the Spirit, the ackvity, neglect and disobedience of the Holy Spirit. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 33
c. Solomon & his wisdom Solomon spoke that wisdom is related to the Spirit as a spiritual gid, and outpouring of words through which the Spirit expresses himself. d. Other kings in the North & South Many were evil but some were godly, who led the people back to the Lord from sin. e. Exiles & Ichabod (1Sam 4:21) The word ichabod summarized the spiritual condikon of Israel during the exile; the glory has departed. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 34
4.5 The Exile a. God s presence was skll with his people in exile. The ministry of Daniel and Ezekiel who double up as prophets of God in exile indicates God s presence with them. b. The visions received and the messenger of God also indicate God s ackvity in the people during the exile. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 35
4.6 The Returnees a. Cyrus His heart was moved by the Lord, the Spirit (Neh 1:5) b. Zerrubabel He was encouraged by the words of the prophet Zechariah (Zech 6:8; 7;12; 12:10) c. Ezra The good hand of the Lord (7:9; 8:18) d. Nehemiah He wept and prayed for Jerusalem. Ref to your good spirit to instruct and admonish them (9:20, 30) 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 36
5. The Holy Spirit in the Prophe>c Wri>ngs According to Horton, the enkre OT looks on prophecy as the chief ackvity of the Spirit among his people. (p 55) For eg. Moses desired that all the Lord s people would be prophets and that is condikoned by the coming of the Holy Spirit upon them (Num 11:29). 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 37
5.1 The Outpouring of the Spirit (Joel 2:28) Joel speaks of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon all flesh. It is both an immediate and an extended prophesy. 5.2 The future hope of the Davidic King in Isaiah (Isa 11:1-2, 3-5; 42:1-4) Isaiah speaks of the future rule, the Messiah endowed with God s Spirit. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 38
5.3 Micah the Social Reformer Micah speaks of the spirit of judgement as he was anointed to renounce and denounce sin in God s people. 5.4 Ezekiel s Experiences Ezekiel speaks of his unusual experiences of being lided up (3:12, 8:3, 11:24) in the Spirit. Hand of God 1:3, 8:1,11:1); the Message of God came by the Spirit (2:2); New Spirit (36:26-27); river from the Temple. (47:1-12) 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 39
5.5 Zechariah s Experiences of the Spirit Zechariah speaks of the role of the Spirit in the restorakon of the Temple and the people. 5.6 Isaiah: A Judgment Sign (4:3-5) The Spirit brings divine wrath not only to punish evil but to bring in the Kmes of the Messiah a) The Spirit and the Messiah b) Spirit s Power and Guidance 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 40
5.7 A New Spirit in Israel a. Jeremiah the hand of the Lord b. Ezekiel Spirit moved on Ezekiel personally c. Daniel Spirit of the holy gods d. Haggai Spirit remains among God s people e. Zechariah not by might but by My Spirit f. Hosea God will come as la_er rain g. Amos close relakonship between Spirit and the Word. 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 41
Conclusion: The Spirit in the Old Testament 1. Three general uses of ruach : a) wind or a breath of air; b) principle of life; c) the life of God himself. 2. God as life- giving spirit is the proper source of life and strength. 3. In the prophekc books, the Messiah and his anoinkng by the Spirit occupy a major role 24 Jan 2016 By Simon Cheong 42
