2 Africa s only heritage Awards celebrate those who promote heritage Heritage month is a month where we celebrate our culture and the diversity of our beliefs and traditions for nation building and social cohesion. On 15 September 2017, the National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC) together with the Northern Cape Province Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Sol Plaatje Municipality hosted the Golden Shield Heritage Awards at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre in Kimberley. We pride ourselves to celebrate our heritage champions in these national awards in our province. It is through the sport, arts and culture that we as the department can assist in developing and empowering our communities. Let us continue to embrace our culture for a sense of identity and belonging said Department of Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Bongiwe Mbingo-Gigaba. With 2017, declared the year of OR Tambo, the Awards were hosted under the theme: Celebrating Cultural and Heritage champions in the 100 years of Oliver Tambo. MEC Mbingo-Gigaba thanked the esteemed cultural and heritage champions that as the 2

embrace their rich heritage for social cohesion and nation building in South Africa.

Towards the prestigious awards, the communities of the Northern Cape province were brought together through the Heritage Imbizo in Platfontein where the Xu and Xhwe were encouraged to celebrate and embrace their rich heritage for social cohesion and nation building in South Africa. A Cultural parade awakened the spirit of Heritage month in the city with some educational snippets about the town s sites significant to the province s liberation heritage. Local cultural groups from the various cultures in the province including Batswana, Xu and the Xhwe captivated the public with their traditional dance and performances. Advocate Sonwabile Mancotywa, CEO of the NHC motivated the finalists by saying that even if they do not make it as winners in their categories, they must not despair and must continue doing the great work of promoting our heritage and culture. He stressed that the we need to invest in our heritage because it is our DNA. Below are the Golden Shield Heritage Awards 2017 Africa s only heritage Awards celebrate those who promote heritage 3

5 Young Heritage Activist: Young persons of not older than 35 years can be nominated in this category. The person must have a proven track record of passionately contributing to heritage awareness of a greater community or even nationally. The work of the nominee for which he/she is nominated must make the nation proud of the rich cultural heritage of this country and its people. The person must be an active community activist who is recognised in the area where he/she operates. 5

Her products are traded even on social media to reach a wider target market. She has trained and employed a number of passionate youth in her community. Most of the houses in her community have been decorated using her hand crafted designs. 6 6

7 Preferred Heritage Destination Nominees in this category can for example be, a heritage site, museum, leisure facility, interpretation centre, etc. that offers visitors an exceptional experience of cultural heritage and history of South Africa. It will be an added advantage for the Preferred Heritage Destination to be an example that demonstrates an ever-evolving, popular and effective tourism product that engages with people of all ages. 7

Mphebatho Cultural Museum Mphebatho Cultural Museum is a community based museum in the heart of Pilanesburg in the North West province in The Well of Heritage Moruleng Cultural Precinct.

The museum upholds the history, culture and heritage of the Bakgatla Ba Kgafela community and the Batswana people at large in unconventional ways. Exhibitions at the museum cover traditional Batswana knowledge systems, oral history, etc. It is a 21st century space that is highly conceptual and stimulates visitors creative and critical thinking. This museum is about exploring, discovering, learning and preserving. 8

9 Heritage Corporate Citizen Any private business that has incorporated heritage into part of their business is eligible to be nominated for this category. This may for example include the way the company preserves its history or history of products, the company s commitment to fund heritage projects of communities, made other resources available to heritage development, protection and promotion, etc. The size of the business does not matter nor does the scale of the project. 9

10 Naomi Mamakiri NMFD (Naomi Mamakiri Fasion Designs) is a South African brand which has managed to touch and dress nations from various parts of the world. Under NMFD inspires clothes for special occasions like the red carpets events, weddings, graduation, etc. the purpose of NMFD is to make traditional clothes relevant to today s lifestyle, and encourage its clients to feel proud of their culture and continue wearing their traditional clothes. Its motto is to remain relevant as it continues to utilise a wide range of locally manufactured fabrics from the African Continent. 10

11 Heritage Education Persons, irrespective of their profession, including Teachers as well as organisations are eligible for nomination in this category for work that educates other people about South African heritage and culture. It may be formal workshops, tours, educational programmes, special lessons or similar programmes that aims at making the public more aware and proud about the heritage, culture and history of South Africa. 11

12 Ms Sibiya Is there any better way of preserving one s heritage if not by research and documentation? Ms Sibiya and her team of learners are currently researching and documenting their local heritage in order to archive it for the current and future generations. She has attended many conferences in which she presented papers on the importance of indigenous knowledge systems especially when it comes to fighting pollution. Her initiatives are prospects of expanding the heritage to a tourism angle to provide job opportunities. She is currently coordinating a programme, in which her learners are looking at their local cultural heritage and how it can be preserved. 12

13 National Living Treasure The nominees must have promoted and advocated the significance or revival of Intangible Cultural Heritage over a period of years. The award recognizes an elder who is highly involved in transferring traditional art forms such as rug weaving, basketry, storytelling, pottery and design, as well as other forms that are considered intangible, to the young generation. The nominees are expected to be persons who promote community events, volunteer work on a regular basis, take on a leadership role and encourage others to get involved. People who qualify for this award shall always be 50 years old and over in recognition of the wealth of knowledge they possess, not necessarily gathered through academic and scholarly work. A bare-foot-professor as they are commonly called. 13

She has recorded and performed with, amongst others, Mahotella Queens, Dark Sisters, Dorothy Masuka, the Sweet Sixteens, Izintombi Zomoya, Irene and the Sweet Queens. She has written songs in Zulu, Sotho, Pedi and Venda. She is currently the Chairperson of the TSHIMA group responsible for the recognition of young artists who sing traditional music. 14

15 Persons Living with Disability This award shall be handed to people with disabilities whose work enhances the heritage cause. It shall be a person male or female who might, under different circumstances, have used the disability as something that disabled him or her form performing such heritage work but nonetheless did something of significance to and/ or beneficial to the heritage cause. The work done may, or may not benefit people living with disabilities; however, the person who is recognised should be a person who is a team leader, manager, owner, pioneer, nation builder, etc. 15

17 Academic Excellence This award will recognise an academic institution or a person working for an academic institution that has initiatives / programmes that promote knowledge production in heritage. The category recognises excellence of research (individual/organisational) conducted on any subject of heritage. The work should demonstrate or show outstanding scholarship. The work must be unique and done in South Africa. All public and private tertiary institutions that offer academically accredited qualifications and are based in South Africa will be considered in this category. 17

As part of his Doctoral research, he looked at the significance of rock art conservation. He is passionate about the archaeology and history of the Northern Cape as well as the importance of museums in society. 18

19 Voice of Heritage This category recognises any person or institution who publishes books, articles, magazines, websites or produces videos, documentaries, songs, digital games etc. to document heritage and make it accessible to the public. The final product may be for sale or free to the public. Evidence of an established record of making the material available to the public must be available as proof, for example, a copy of the product. 19

He is currently researching and documenting Batswana culture through archival digitization. He is indeed one of the champions of heritage management. 20

21 Liberation Heritage Steward The liberation struggle history of South Africa is a critical part of how our people s freedom was taken away and the democracy was gained. It now helps us a country to reconstruct this history as our heritage of a rainbow nation. Many citizens, organisations and companies have voluntarily taken the responsibility to protect the South African flag from being auctioned, the original Freedom Charter from being shipped out of the country and may other credible initiatives. Persons and organisations that have done such exceptional work to preserve our liberation heritage even in the unknown corners of our communities will be acknowledged in this category 21

He continues to work with the Nelson Mandela University in researching about those unsung heroes and heroines who played a role in the liberation of this country

23 The Outstanding Community Project In this category, the NHC shall select one of its beneficiary projects that displayed; a well-executed project that was delivered within the submitted plan and particularly set timeframes. Such a project should contribute in changing lives in the communities it targets, derive economic benefit for communities; contribute towards poverty alleviation and also empower communities with skills for self-sustenance. The project should also contribute towards making such communities aware of their heritage, leads to tangible effects in preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage in South Africa. 23

24 The Peelton Congregational church The Peelton Congregational church was built in 1875 by Reverend Brit from the London Missionary Society. This church also served as a school which produced some of the prominent figures in the South African community. The revered early intellectual Walter Rubusana and liberation struggle stalwart, Steve Tshwete, amongst others, are the alumni of this historic missionary school. Renovations are at an advanced stage to restore this historic building to its glorious past 24 24

25 Ubuntu Honours This award will be handed out to someone who personifies the values of Ubuntu as outlined in a separate concept document of Ubuntu. As a departure from how it was previously done, the following will be introduced: N the the -An ordinary or common person will be selected by the NHC Council to receive the award. -A new award will be crafted, which will be different to the one awarded to personalities such as Dr Nelson Mandela and Dr Kenneth Kaunda, etc. who are some of the previous recipients. -The award will have an incentive attached to it. m -The criteria may not only be inter-human relations but may also be linked to fauna and flora of South Africa as long as it promotes inter-dependence between nature and humans. 25

Who else embodies this mobile library and heritage of the ordinary people than Tat Mfengu? He has travelled an extraordinary journey and change a course of history for the better. The story of his upbringing can be summarised by the words of James Baldwin, who writes: I am what time, circumstance, history, have made of me, certainly, but I am also, much more than that Chief Executive of the NHC Adv. 27 Lifetime achievement award / Heritage Ambassador -This is a special award nominated by the National Heritage Council which recognises an individual with an outstanding and lasting contribution to the heritage interpretation profession over a significant period of time. The nominee should have made outstanding contribution in a number of key areas: education and training, producing exemplary interpretive projects, supporting and promoting cultural or natural heritage activities. The impact made by his or her contribution must be of national or international significance. -The person, after being selected by the committee of the NHC, shall actively canvass for the promotion of heritage and culture. He / she shall be expected to attend to radio and television interviews when necessary and so requested. At every available opportunity, the ambassador will give public talks to promote and educate people about heritage. 27

She radiates an undeniable energy when she speaks. That vitality is important, because Masuku represents a part of South Africa that many have forgotten. Renowned for her deep knowledge of Tswana traditional and cultural values, she is driven by a respect and reverence for her people and environment that has resulted in a remarkable life. Mama Masuku proclaims that It s so important to preserve nature, and there s something about it; the more you preserve, the more you learn about nature, the better you become.
