1 FIRST NEWS First United Methodist Church Volume 9 Issue 5 May 2018 As United Methodists this is our mission: to make new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. May 20 th is Confirmation Sunday. For the past 8 months, 7 of our youth have gathered for weekly classes to learn and discuss what it means to be a person of faith. Simultaneously, they have met with adult mentors from our congregation who have supported these youth on their important faith journey. For Pastor Laird and I, the Confirmation Class has been a blast! I am amazed at the intelligence, curiosity, and spiritual maturity these special young people have demonstrated throughout our time together. Each confirmation class is a hoot. One minute, I m nagging the kids to finish stirring their hot chocolate so they can come back to the table and get going on the lesson, the next minute I m blown away by a depth of insight that a questioning teenager shares with our group. This has been a fantastic class, and I m honored to have been allowed into their lives for this time. Honestly, I m pretty sure that I ve learned more than our youth! If you haven t had an opportunity to visit with or congratulate our confirmation class members, I highly encourage you to seek out any of these young people and spend a few minutes visiting with him or her. I think you will be impressed and filled with hope as you interact with those who are the future of our church and world. I also want to offer a special thank you to those who have served as mentors to these youth. Below is our list of confirmands with their mentors. Pastor Tina Worship Times Sunday School - 9:15 AM Sunday Worship - 10:30 As you probably know by now, our Music Minister, John Fuss, has submitted his resignation effective as of the end of June. John has ministered to us for almost 25 years. He has left a lasting mark on the ministries of our church. He has contributed much to the City of Roswell. He, and we, have much to be proud of and to celebrate as John ends his ministry to us. John is in the process of considering what the next phase of his ministry and mission will be. I know you will join me in keeping John and Karen and their family in your thoughts and prayers as John transitions to his next calling. The SPRC sub group of the Administrative Council will be considering how to proceed with the music ministry position on a going forward basis. Isaiah 66:13 Mother s Day serves as an opportunity to remember and honor special women who have loved and cared for us. Every year, more and more older adults outlive their financial resources. It s only with the continued generosity of families, friends, and congregations to the annual Mother s Day Offering, that Landsun Homes residents can stay in what has become their home. With your generosity, they experience lives full of grace, dignity and purpose. The Mother s Day Offering is one of the most significant sources of funding that assures these beloved older adults will remain in their Landsun Homes home, and receive the care they need, no matter what challenges they face. Now more than ever, the seniors who have cared for us need us to care for them. We pray that with your help in 2018, we can provide appropriate care for all in need. Daniel s mother, Frances, is also part of the household. Are you surprised that we need to build a 4- bedroom home? Once again, this congregation will partner with habitat in this build. You may want to help frame, paint, or trim. On Sunday, May 6 YOU can take part in a 2 x 4 signing. Bring some dollars, fives, or twenties. Sign your name and your positive message on a 2 x 4 that will become a part of the home. We will be next to the sanctuary at 9:00, 10:15, and 11:30. All proceeds of this Fun-Raiser will be used to reduce Daniel s mortgage for the new home. ANNUAL CONFERENCE JUNE 13-15, 2018 Annual Conference is just around the corner and we need your help collecting items for the Conference Mission Project. This year the conference is collecting items for Hygiene Kits. They are very specific on some of the items, so if you right click on the following link and open, you will find a list of the many items that are needed.
