May 2018 This Month of May we celebrate the DAY OF PENTECOST. When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Acts 2:1-4 (NRSV) I had enough trouble trying to speak English let alone Spanish in Junior High and then Greek for a couple of years in college. We are all called and gifted to speak in this world to the praise and worship of God. Fortunately, we do not have to be proficient with eloquent English and multiple languages. There is one common language we are all gifted with by the Holy Spirit. As St. Paul begins his beautiful love chapter of First Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. There is one living risen Lord, one God, one Spirit, one body, and one language. And it all speaks love. We are gifted by the Holy Spirit to love with the living, risen Lord of life. Thank you for speaking God s love not just with words but also through your actions of service both within Christ by the Lake and in our community. WELCOME BACK Carol, we are so grateful that you re getting your strength back and will be able to join us this month! Arkansas/Oklahoma Synod Assembly May 4th 6th in Tulsa, OK Bob & Elaine Smith will act as representatives along with Pastor Sherman. Also accompanying them on the journey is Vicki Gordius. Proverbs 22:2 The rich and the poor have this in common: the Lord is the maker of them all. Proverbs 14:31 Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but those who are kind to the needy honor him. May priorities: Fruit, Cereal, Soap & Shampoo On May 10 th we, along with Holy Cross Lutheran, are invited to St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Mountain Home to celebrate the Ascension of our Lord. It begins with worship and communion at 5:30pm. Weather permitting, worship will end outside where you will be invited to write your names upon kites to be lifted up to the Lord. Also, hot dogs etc. will end our fellowship celebration. Another exciting event in May is our Cluster churches gathering to celebrate with a Pre-Pentecost Picnic on Saturday, May 19 from Noon to 4pm at the lake park in Diamond City. There is a nearby community hall in case of bad weather (pray it s not needed!) The hosting congregation, Lord of the Lake, has generously arranged to cater a picnic of chicken, coleslaw, potato salad, beans, and rolls. You are invited to bring Lutheran green Jell-O, dessert, or picnic grazing foods. A free-will donation basket will be out to help defray the cost. In addition to our cluster churches: Jonesboro, Cherokee Village, Mountain Home, and Christ by the Lake, we are reaching out and inviting the community around Lord of the Lake Lutheran. There will be picnic games, swimming, and remember to bring fishing gear if you wish to take some time for that. Fall Convention: 2018 Convention Planning Committee at Work! On being clothed in love and bound anew, in perfect unity/harmony The convention dates are September 28th, 29th and 30th. Opening of the convention is Friday evening with a vespers service and a social hour afterwards. SAVE THE DATE!!!!!! AND HAVE SOME FUN! Our next meeting will be held this month on Wednesday, May 9th at 1:00 PM. Our servers will be Rita Greiner and Dawn Lowe with devotions presented by Mary Baumann. We will discuss the September bake sale and the AR-OK WELCA convention. Please come and help us plan for the future. (Board will meet at Noon.) Project Days & Prayer Shawls Ministry - If you are looking for some way to get involved in the ministries of CBL, why not look into the quilting group or the prayer shawl group. You do not need to sew to help out with the quilters, and the prayer shawl group will happily teach you to knit or crochet. Just a little reminder of all the items WELCA collects: Best choice Labels - Place your BC labels in Mary Phillips box. Pop tabs - Save your pop tabs and bring to church and place them on the bottom shelf of the mail boxes in Fellowship Hall. These tabs are donated to The Ronald McDonald House. Dawn Lowe is taking care of this project. Campbell Soup Labels & Box tops for education - These are donated to Oaks Indian Mission. Please place them in Dawn Lowe's box. Carol and Alan Burns By Sherry Ebert One of the most interesting things that Carol and Alan told me was about their annual visits in April and October to the Subiaco Abbey located halfway between

4 Carol and Alan Burns By Sherry Ebert One of the most interesting things that Carol and Alan told me was about their annual visits in April and October to the Subiaco Abbey located halfway between Dardanelle and Fort Smith. It is a Benedictine Abbey and is a spiritual place that uplifts them. They stay with the monks for 4 days during their retreat and go in to pray with them several times a day. Alan originally saw the Abbey on a map and after checking it out found times when they could stay and meditate. As I spoke with them they were looking forward to going soon. Free Concert Let s all bring a friend and show our support for these amazing kids and this encouraging ministry. Here are some more of the interesting things I learned about Carol and Alan. He was born in Independence, Missouri, one of 10 children and was adopted by a Marine Father. She lived in the Philippines, Quantico and Oceanside, California. The Independence, Missouri school district is where Alan attended all the way to graduation from High School. He was previously briefly married and had no children. Carol was also previously married and had a son and daughter. Her daughter passed away and it remains difficult for her to speak of that loss. Her son lives in Oklahoma. She has 2 grand-children and 4 great-grand children. Alan was in the military and also pursued other things. Carol worked for 37 years at the Roseville Community Hospital near Sacramento, California. They both ended up in Harrison, AR. Alan went to Edwards Grocery and met a check-out person named Carol. He was told to be careful of her because she had recently lost her husband. He also started working there and would go through her check-out line as often as possible. Soon they decided to become room-mates in a 2 bedroom apartment sharing costs and rent being on the practical side. They would be married in 2010 in Eureka Springs. Mountain View and Calico Rock were some of the places they lived, plus the coast of Oregon. Eventually they heard of an apartment in Bull Shoals. They started coming to Christ by the lake and eventually became members. Carol and Alan also attend our Sunday Morning Bible class on Revelation. We are greatly blessed to have them join us! 2 cups quick oats, uncooked 1/3 cup sugar 3 1/3 cups milk 2 eggs, beaten 2 teaspoons

Coat an 8 square glass baking dish with nonstick spray.

In a separate bowl combine milk, eggs and vanilla.

Pour into the prepared baking dish. Bake 40-45 minutes until center jiggles slightly.

Spread the sugar across the entire surface of the oatmeal.

5 Christ by the Lake Lutheran Church Thanks You for your gifts to the church in memory of our dear friend Dean Prescott: Anna Mattson Ruby Kowalke Marty & Lynn Nickels Donna Christensen Women of the ELCA This month Anna Mattson is blessing us with her recipe for the amazing treat we were all raving about at our Easter breakfast. 2 cups quick oats, uncooked 1/3 cup sugar 3 1/3 cups milk 2 eggs, beaten 2 teaspoons vanilla 1/3 cup brown sugar Baked Oatmeal Brulee Heat oven to 350. Coat an 8 square glass baking dish with nonstick spray. Combine oats, sugar and pinch of salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl combine milk, eggs and vanilla. Add the milk mixture into the oatmeal mixture and mix well. Pour into the prepared baking dish. Bake minutes until center jiggles slightly. Remove from oven and sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top. Spread the sugar across the entire surface of the oatmeal. Return to oven; bake just until the brown sugar melts, about 2-3 minutes. Set oven to broil. Broil 3 from heat until brown sugar bubbles and browns slightly, 1-2 minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning. Our Spring bag-sale has been postponed until June, so you have plenty of time to start looking through your clothes and linens for those things you may be willing to donate to this great ministry.
