1 Lesson 21 Jairus Daughter Matt. 9:18 26; Mk. 5:22 43; Lk. 8:41 56 Introduction Mark and Luke have these events occurring sometime after the meal at Matthew s house; however, Matthew s account says that it was while Jesus was at Matthew s house that the events studied below began (Matt. 9:18). The questions are based upon a composite reading of all the accounts, so you will need to read each account separately, then compile the list in a composite story in order to answer correctly. A worksheet is attached to the end of this lesson for your convenience. Words Ruler of the synagogue: Ruler Gr. archon <758>, a chief, ruler. (This was the title given to rulers in Athens during ancient times). In Matt. 9:18, the NAS inserts the word synagogue to describe the kind of ruler or chief he was. Mark uses the term archisunagogos <752> which combines archon and sunogoge (synagogue) (Mk. 5:36, 38), and Luke describes him as archon of the sunogoge in Lk 8:41 and as archisunagogos in 8:49 (same as Mark). To be well, to be saved, sozo <4982> (Mk. 9:21 & 22), can be used in the physical sense, to be made well, or spiritually, to be saved (e.g. Lk 7:50). It is sometimes rendered, made well or made whole. Thus, being saved is being made whole from the sickness of sin. But this is not the same word as to heal or to be healed. Other There is some difficulty in the way the accounts record Jairus request to Jesus about his daughter: Matt. 9:18: she has just died Mk: 5:23: she is at the point of death Lk 8:42 (narrative): He had an only daughter who was dying Notice that Matthew appears to be at odds with the others. This will be discussed in class, but see if you can dig up some information on your own. Questions 1. Who was Jairus? What was His request to Jesus? 2. How old was Jairus daughter? What was special about her? [Hint: John 3:16.]

2 2 Composite Gospels On the way to the house 3. Who were following Jesus on the way to the Jairus house? 4. There we at least three things that burdened this woman: a. What was her illness? How long had she been suffering from it? b. What had she done about it? What kind of burden did this cause? c. What burden of the Law did she also experience (Lev. 15:19 30)? [This also helps explain her reluctance to be noticed.] 5. How did the woman come up with the idea that touching Jesus garments (or any part) could heal her? [see Matt. 14:36, Mk. 3:9 10 and Luke 6:19.] 6. What was unusual about the woman s faith? 7. What question did Jesus ask, and how did His disciples respond? 8. What interesting detail do Mark s and Luke s account add regarding Jesus response to the disciples about who touched Him? [See also Lk. 5:17, 6:19] 9. How does this response show something about the role that faith plays in the miracles?

3 Composite Gospels The woman obviously wanted anonymity in this matter. But why then was Jesus so insistent upon making this a public affair? 11. What did the woman do when she saw that her secret activity had now become public? 12. How does her response and Jesus answer help to answer question 9 (in case you had difficulty answering it)? 13. Put together a composite picture of the healing of the woman. Arriving at the house In the introductory remarks of this lesson, we noted that Matthew s account says Jairus told Jesus his daughter was already dead, while the others indicate the girl was dying, or at the point of death. Also, Matthew s account differs slightly with the others (but is consistent within itself) in that his account does not have anyone coming out to inform Jairus not to trouble Jesus, because the child had by then died. This would be a good time to discuss what you may have found in your study about these things. But something to remember: the account with the most detail is usually the more accurate. It may be that Matthew, for his purpose, was conserving detail in wording things the way he did. 14. Who told Jairus that his daughter was dead? How did Jesus find out about this? What was His response? 15. Where was the crowd of mourners? What did Jesus say to them?

4 4 Composite Gospels 16. What evidence is there to indicate that there were professional mourners at the house? [Note the children s play in regard to this in Matt. 11:16 19] 17. According to Matthew s account, who went into the house with Jesus? 18. According to Mark s and Luke s accounts, who went into the house with Jesus? 19. Which of the accounts, in questions 17 18, is/are the most accurate 1 and why? Do Mark s and Luke s accounts contradict Matthew s? Jesus raises Jairus daughter 20. List some details Mark provides that Luke does not. 21. List some details Luke provides that Mark does not. 22. Put together a composite view of the raising of Jairus daughter (of the events after the woman is healed). Food for thought 23. Consider the faith of Jairus, and the faith of the woman. How are they the same? How are they different? 1 More accurate or most accurate does not mean that another account is inaccurate. If one witness reports, The red car hit the blue car, and another says, The red Ford hit the blue Chevy and a third, The red Ford Escort hit the blue Chevy Malibu, the third account would be the most accurate even though none of them is inaccurate.
