2 Pastor s Page Martin Luther from the Large Catechism: God himself milks the cow through the vocation of the milkmaid. What is your vocation? We all have a vocation and our vocation in many ways defines who we are. A vocation is who we are and what we do. But more importantly our vocation is the means by which God acts through us in the world. We become the hand of God and there is no such thing as a worthless or meaningless vocation. Everything we do is holy because God uses what we do to provide for the world. When I grew up my mother and father taught me the value of work. Work was so much more than getting a paycheck. Work was what gives a life value. I was taught that I was never above any job. I was taught that to work was to give my life purpose and meaning. I was taught that any job worth doing is worth doing well. I was taught that doing was the greatest expression of my being. Martin Luther taught the doctrine of vocation. He taught that what makes a job holy is that it is a job God has given us. Luther taught that if I am asked by God to change the diapers of my child, then I am doing a holy job. Luther taught that as long as we are doing what God asks us to do, then we are doing a holy task. That is what the above quotation means. God himself milks the cow through the vocation of the milkmaid. The milkmaid does a holy work in milking the cow because God gives the world milk through the actions of the milkmaid. Luther lived in a time when it was very clear that there was a separation between Holy work and ordinary work. In fact, it was thought in Luther s time that the work of the church was so holy that only a priest who was ordained by the church could do it properly. The church at that time thought that only the priest could understand and read Scriptures. But Luther thought the Bible was to be read by everyone, so he translated the Bible into the language of the common people which at that time was German. Luther thought everyone should read the Bible and the only thing holding the people back in reading the Bible, was a translation of the Bible in the language of the general population. I think God must have thought the same thing, because independent of Luther s translation of the Bible into German, was the invention of the printing press. Soon Luther s translation was being mass produced and soon the Bible would become the bestselling book in the world, as it is today. It was thought that there was ordinary stuff and sacred stuff. It was thought that they were at war with each other. The ordinary stuff could pollute the sacred stuff. The sacred stuff needed to influence the ordinary stuff, but the job would never be fully accomplished. It was thought that the sacred stuff needed to lead and influence the ordinary stuff. Luther felt that the ordinary stuff was sacred. The ordinary stuff was sacred because it is how the world is run. The farmer is doing a sacred work because his work feeds the world. The teacher is doing a sacred work because children are taught and fulfilled through education. The secretary communicates with words that influence the world. The assembly line worker makes something for the world. All work is holy work. What we need to do is to appreciate the work of others. There is a song entitled City on a Hill by Casting Crowns and the lyrics are as follows: Did you hear of the city on the hill? Said one old man to the other. It once shined bright and it would be shining still but they all started turning on each other. You see the poets thought the dancers were shallow and the soldiers thought the poets were weak, and the elders saw the young ones as foolish

3 and the rich man never heard the poor man speak and the light began to fade in the city on the hill. Each one thought that they knew better, but they were different by design. Instead of standing strong together they let their differences divide. But it was the rhythm of the dancers that gave the poets life. It was the spirit of the poets that gave the soldiers strength to fight. It was the fire of the young ones, it was the wisdom of the old. It was the story of the poor man that needed to be told. And the Father s calling still. Come home to the city on the hill. Come home. We celebrate Labor Day this month. It is not a religious holiday but it should be. Our work is holy and together our work is how thy Kingdom comes and thy will is done on earth as it is in Heaven. Lutheran theology is extraordinarily ordinary and remarkably unremarkable because we believe in the holiness of all our labors. On September 10 th at the New Century Buffet in El Cajon at 868 Jackman Street. Daily Devotions Would you like to be a part of our church s daily devotions? Just let Pastor Rick or the Church Office know your address and you can received the daily devotions via or stop by the table in the back of the church and pick up last week s list of daily devotions. Most of the devotions are written by Pastor Rick but some are shared by members on the list. If you want to submit a devotion to the list that has now grown to over 80 participants just write to Pastor Rick at SYMCN1@aol.com. What a great way to have Bible study a part of your everyday life a little Scripture at a time. Thursday Bible Studies Thursdays in September Pastor Rick is offering a Bible Study. The study is at the Schowalter home at 1630 Whitsett Drive in El Cajon at 6:00am to 6:30am. Come and join us! Church Mailings Would you like to be included on the church e- mail list? Do you want some bit of news ed to the congregation? An list is being compiled by the church office and you can add yourself to the group list by just dropping a note into the offering plate or calling the church office at If you would like to something please submit the request in writing after checking with Pastor Rick. All s sent will be sent without listing the addresses of the others who are receiving the information. This is called a blind ing and is meant to protect these addresses from reaching someone who is not

4 authorized to send to our church members without permission. Feed the Homeless Monday, September 2 nd TACO (Third Ave Charitable Organization) Feed the Homeless at First Lutheran Church, SD. Let Pastor Rick know if you want to help. Pastor Rick will not be able to go but there will be someone to guide you. You will meet in the church parking lot at 2:30p.m. Church Council Sunday, September 15 th at Noon Bible Study We will have Bible study on the book of Romans on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month August 14 th and 28 th At the Kaffee Meister in Santee At 4:30pm Everyone Welcome!! Sunday, September 8 th ELCA Yellow Shirt Service Day The ELCA is coordinating a Service Sunday with other ELCA churches in San Diego. Confirmation Sunday, September 22 nd Noon Come join the new class!!! Wednesday Children s Ministry Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 4 th God s Gifts: For Pre-school to 3rd grade. Take home lessons where children answer Bible story questions and memorize Scripture for prizes and a rewards event Souled Out: For 4th through 6th grade. This established ministry will move to Wednesdays so there will be something for all the children in our families at the same time. Contact Keri Hyles or Pastor Rick for more information Fitness for Free! Did you know that you could participate in a free fitness class? Monday and Wednesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. In the Acts Center just wear comfortable clothes and join the group. The instructor is amazing and all equipment is provided.

5 Women s bible study The women s bible study is changing to a new day. We will begin meeting Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in September. The Women of Faith series is used as a discussion guide. Any woman in the congregation is invited for fellowship and bible study. Upcoming Youth and Young Adult Events One Salvation Youth Led Service is an interactive time to share what God is doing in our lives, and how all we do is centered on his word. The message is scripture based with audio-visuals. All youth are welcome Tuesday night s from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. resuming September 10th. Immediately following One Salvation from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. we will have a homework/study time. During this time, there will be a credentialed teacher available to help the high school youth with homework. Joyful Noise Art and Music Camp A total of 36 campers attended camp this summer. The church provided many scholarships and several families contributed donations for snacks. Ten adults from the congregation volunteered to make sure we always had two persons over 25 on the property. Thank you for supporting this ministry. The July 26 th performance and art walk was attended by over 100 persons. Attendees witnessed a wonderful 45 minute performance, based on the theme, Never Give Up and then enjoyed an Art Walk featuring arts and crafts from the month long camp. Thanks for your support. Two special guests visited camp this summer. A professional drummer came with instruments for every camper and staff and we participated in a drum circle. Officer Nathan Wentz (congregation member) from the San Diego Police Department spoke to the campers about safety and legal issues related to youth and showed them a patrol car. College bound young adults We have a large number of our young adults attending college. Pray for their safe travels and academic studies.
