2 Reflections Setting our Minds 8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9 The point of this season of Lent is to prepare our minds and hearts to receive the resurrection with the fullness of joy. The hard truth is that we cannot really experience the fullness of the resurrection if we are not prepared to experience the death. Jesus offered the sacrifice of himself for our sins. In that sacrifice he also prepared the way for our fullness of life and wholeness. Easter living is a way of enjoying the meaning and hope that comes because of God s gift of new life. Our problem is that we think of many of these gifts as being a warm, happy feeling, kind of like you get when you ve eaten a lot of chocolate but before the sugar buzz or stomach ache kicks in. Unfortunately, for many people, Easter is experienced as a temporary relief from a sense of dread or disaster that looms over them, because the world is a hostile and dangerous place. For those who are prepared to walk through the path of Christ s death, Easter Resurrection is the promise that loss, suffering, and death are not as powerful as God s love and promise of our eternal life. Instead of living in anxiousness, hostility and fear, Easter is the reminder that God s desire for us is that we live in confidence, peace, and joy. That is a lot better world in which to inhabit. Our problem is that do not have the capability to force ourselves to think differently or to set our minds on the resurrection. It is a little like traveling from here to New York. There are many ways to get there, but all of them involve moving from where we are and making our way. Wishing we were there doesn t change our location. Putting one foot in front of the other enables us to make the trip. In the same way, walking step by step enables us to make the journey to where we are going. I suppose, the same way that, generally, we can t get to New York without going through New Jersey, you can t really get to resurrection without going through death. The point is, that our path requires steps of openness, experience of God s presence, recognition of our own need for forgiveness, and celebration of God s grace. Each of these steps are part of the travel into death, through to resurrection. Generally, these steps are intermingled and inter-related. We come together for Lent and practice these steps together because there is a reinforcing power to being together. The journey is very much worth it. The gift of living with a mind that is full of the knowledge of the God of Peace and living in the confidence of our personhood of being loved and supported by God, is worth the steps. Welcome to the journey. Peace, Pastor Jack 2

3 Coming Up in Worship - March 3/19/2017 Sermon: Theme: Purpose: "Living Water that Gives Life" Jesus invites us to be healed through opening our hearts to the water of life rather than our own will and stubbornness. The congregation will see the importance of worshipping God in Spirit and in truth. Scriptures: Exodus 17:1-7 The Hebrew people in the wilderness, complain because they have no water. John 4:5-42 Jesus and the Samaritan woman by the well. Questions: What does living water welling up with us mean to us? What is causing us to be dried out and barren in our lives? What causes us to continue to struggle with the same issues and emptiness in our relationships? How does our quarrelling and self-absorbed ways affect our relationship with God and with the people around us? How does the process of acknowledging our need and our struggles affect our relationships with God and with others? How do we learn to worship in Spirit and in truth? 3/26/2017 Sermon: "Choosing to See" Theme: We choose to know God and in that way to have vision of what God is doing in the world with us and through us. Purpose: The congregation will confess their need to see and choose to allow God to show them a new way to live. Scriptures: Ephesians 5:8-14 Once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. John 9:1-41 Jesus heals the man who was born blind by washing in the pool of Siloam. Questions: What does it mean for us to be able to see spiritually? What kept the Pharisees and other religious leaders from being able to see Jesus ministry as a work that came from God? What keeps us from recognizing God s work in our midst? How is it that we become unaware of God s works happening around us? In what ways does faithfulness to God affect our ability to see what God is doing? In what ways does our own stubbornness blind us to the opportunities to show God s love and care for others? 4/2/2017 Communion Sunday Sermon: "Dry Bones and Hopeless Hearts" Theme: We are alive in Jesus Christ as we set our minds and hearts on the Holy Spirit's love and God's grace. Purpose: The congregation will recognize that our source of strength and renewal comes from our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Scriptures: Ezekiel 37:1-14 Valley of the dry bones - The Spirit gives life and hope. Romans 8:6-11 To set the mind on the flesh is death, to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 3

4 Coming Up in Worship - March / April 3/26/2017 Sermon: "Choosing to See" Theme: We choose to know God and in that way to have vision of what God is doing in the world with us and through us. Romans 8:6-11 To set the mind on the flesh, is death, to set the mind on the Spirit, is life and peace. Questions: In what ways do we feel like dried up bones? What parts of our lives are hopeless and without energy or life? How do we set our minds on the Spirit, rather than allow our minds to be set on the flesh? Is this something we do in prayer or meditation or is this something that involves all of our days? What has happened to us so that we do not trust God or feel prepared to depend on the Spirit of God? What is the result of being focused on things that feel like they are ending or dying? How do we become people who live by the power of God s presence and Holy Spirit? 4/9/2017 Palm Sunday Sermon: "Welcome the Humble Reign" Theme: Christ comes to us in humility, and invites us to live in that same joyful mind of humility and grace. Purpose: The congregation will recognize the value and power of the 'mind of Christ.' Scriptures: Matthew 21:1-11 Jesus enters Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. Philippians 2:5-11 Have the same mind that was in Christ Jesus, that he humbled himself. Questions: What does it mean to have the Same mind as was in Christ as we humble ourselves? What is the message of Jesus coming to Jerusalem riding on a donkey? What difference does it make to us that this event happened in a distant city so many years ago, especially with all of the war and violence in the world today? In what places is a humble servant king needed to bring peace to the world? In what ways does a humble servant king bring peace in our own minds and hearts? How do we embrace the coming of Christ as our Lord? 4

7 Church Forgiveness: A Lenten Study Through this brief study we will see how forgiveness can be a gift we give to ourselves: to release the control that past events and hurts have over how we think and feel today. This study will be using the book Forgiveness: A Lenten Study. You do not have to have read the book to participate in the class, however, those who read the book will appreciate, how forgiveness functions in our lives to heal our hearts and free us from the past. The class will be led by Pastor Jack following our Lenten Observances. March 22 7:00-8:00 Repentance: Getting a New Mind March 29 7:00-8:00 Forgiving: Embracing Freedom April 5 7:00-5:00 Beginning Again: Reconciliation and Restoration Lenten Services March 22, 29 and April 5 Lenten Services at 6:30pm These brief, thirty minute services open our hearts to Christ. This is accomplished through a time of reading scriptures, music, and a brief meditation on the themes of growing in Christ, and knowing God more fully. Here s What s on the Menu March 22 March 29 April 5 Vegetable Beef Chili Creamy Potato & Ham March 26 - Book Study on Jonah Have you heard a good fish story lately? Most of us have not heard the Bible s fish story since our days as a kid in Sunday school (no, it was not a whale!). It is a story packed full of both humor and serious theology. Come join me, and many others, on a 4-week journey through the book of Jonah. Discover what your Sunday school teacher did not teach you. The classes will be held during Education Hour (9:15-10:15am) on: March 26 April 9 April 23 May TBD April 1 - Jean Morgan s Birthday Celebration Jean Morgan is celebrating her 90th birthday! Our church s contribution will be determined based on the number of applicants. Thoughts on Generosity In Luke 12 verse 34, Jesus told his disciples For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. This verse has been referenced in several stewardship sermons over the years and it always resonates with me. It provides direction to me and inspires me when it comes to contributing money to the church. God and our church are important to me and I try to make my finances, or treasures, reflective of that. I believe that when my contributions are combined with other faithful givers of our congregation and given to God, mighty and wonderful things are able to be done. People are being helped in many ways, both near and far, by our combined gifts. God and church are important to me. I have relied on them often in the past and expect to be able to do so in the future. Our church has been part of my family s weddings, baptisms, confirmations, and funerals. It takes resources to conduct all of these events. Resources like a beautiful sanctuary and a talented church staff, among other things. If I expect the church to be there when I need them it seems only right that I contribute financially to the church all the time. There is another benefit I receive from faithful stewardship of my financial resources. I feel that when I turn my money over to God it is being used to prepare a place for me in heaven. It s comforting to know that when I give money to church it is not only being used here on earth but that it is also pleasing to God and that God uses it in heaven for my eternal resting place. 10 Wednesday Morning Bible Study - 10:30 noon Wednesdays 1 Corinthians We are continuing to work our way through the wisdom and instruction of the Apostle Paul s letter to the church in Corinth. The message began with a focus on the issues that divided the church into factions that could not work together, and had ceased to reflect Christ s love to the world. We are now getting into the latter half of Paul s letter, focusing on his work of reconciliation, as we examine the need for a strong personal relationship with Christ. That relationship gives us the ability to be loving and accepting of others who have experienced Christ s love, 02/22/ Corinthians 10:23- "Do Everything to God's Glory;" "Male and Female in the Worshipping through other cultures and backgrounds. 11:16 Church;" Our class begins with prayer and enables us to support one another.
