2 WELCOME TO UPPER ARLINGTON LUTHERAN CHURCH Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take. Proverbs 3:5-6 I was always the girl who wanted to teach in innercity Chicago. For six and a half years, that was my dream from the time I was 15 years old. The Lord took me there on a mission trip and showed me my passion for loving those who don t get a lot of love. He showed me my desire to bring love into dark, broken places. So you can imagine my surprise December of 2016 when, my senior year of college a week before I was about to move to Chicago, God decided to let me know that He might want me to move back home to Columbus and work at UALC. I was furious. I couldn t believe He was pulling the rug out from under my dreams, what (I thought) He d been leading me toward for six and a half years. And so I was tossed into my final semester of college student teaching in Chicago and I had to trust. I felt like I was walking through fog I had no idea where I was going for the first time in a long time. But through that fog, God reached out His hand and I clung to Him. I drew close and I felt safe because despite the fact that I couldn t see, I could feel Him near and I knew he was taking Coming up this month: care of me. And when I needed to know where I was going, He would tell me. And He did, in time. He led me back home, to the church where I was baptized, to the church where I grew up, to my family, my community. He opened doors for me at UALC that I never imagined possible. He led me to the position of Director of Middle School Ministry, a job that I can t imagine loving more. And I learned something: all the years of planning I did that was all me, that wasn t God. I felt God tugging on my heart, and I took that tug and I determined His plan for me. So when He turned my plans upside down, it ended up being a more beautiful blessing than I could ever ask for or imagine because I trusted Him and sought His will. God is moving mountains in our church. I believe He brought me back here to be part of that movement. So today I encourage you to seek His will and His will alone, because ultimately He will show you which path to take. She talked about her REFIT exercise group and about how it had changed her life. I was a bit skeptical but thought, That is great for her. You see, I never exercised with a group of people before nor did I even like the idea of exercising. I did some investigating and the more Stacey talked about REFIT the more I thought I might give it a try. Stacey held a demo class for the preschool coworkers before her launch class at UALC Lytham Road and I wasn t very good at it, (and I still am not), but I truly enjoyed it and I know it was good for me. As Stacey began instructing her REFIT classes back in February, I started attending on a regular basis. It was good for my body, mind and soul. I think it helps knowing Stacey and knowing that it s a no judgment zone and that there are other Christian ladies there. I honestly look forward to our weekly class on Thursday evening and wish she offered twice a week instead of just once. After we pray, I feel physically and spiritually better when I leave the class. Johanna Lapczynski Class meets Thursdays, 6:15-7:15 pm, Lytham Road; $5 fee per class (suggested donation) Contact Stacey Swanson, refitwithstacey. ualc@gmail.com.

6 A Message from the NALC: The Southeast Ohio Mission District First English Lutheran Church First English Lutheran Church is located at 687 London Avenue, Marysville, OH Our average weekly worship attendance is 58. We have one called pastor and four part-time positions (Admin Asst., Organist, Choir Director, Accompanist). First English Lutheran Church is a growing congregation, with age range variety. Disciples participate in worship leadership, Christian education, parish planning, and domestic and benevolence support hands-on, financial, domestic and international. With focus on particular mission aid inside, Christ s Presence expanded outside with a Giving Tree (free items for neighbors), outdoor worship and a carnival, and in the HOPE Center (former school transformed by area churches to house food, clothing, furniture, legal and job-readiness help, and prayer time with those in need). Worship is of a liturgical format, changing by Church season. Children lead as soon as possible, and are encouraged to shadow adults in preparation. Services include LBW, WOV, and ELW resources, Holy Communion in most services, and praise with organ, choir, and instruments. Little Lambs Lounge affords participation in worship as folks tend to their children. Stewarding blessings is emphasized: disciples have their own mailboxes, VBS programming is constructed by disciples, artists and teachers use materials creatively, and unnecessary overhead expenses are avoided. Ministries to highlight: prison ministry, scholarships for education, camperships, and childhood development, diligent care of shut-ins and special needs disciples, and Gospel Boots On Ground Sundays (local care agencies are contacted for overage area residents in need; FELC responds as their off-campus offering). The Holy Spirit brings ministries through our proximity to the hospital, low income housing, and penitentiaries. There is much foot traffic, and weekly, prisoners receive respect, Christian care, meals, and worship. The Giving Tree offers no-pressure aid, and baptisms, affirmations, and job-ready clothing are provided regularly with the incarcerated. Mission aid to disaster relief and emphasis on service outside of ourselves have led to deeper relationship with Christ. Uplifted spirits led to needed building improvement and energy efficiency. The children are enthusiastic and encouraged to be the NOW, not just the future, of the Church. Future issues of The Cornerstone will highlight the 13 congregations of the Southeast Ohio Mission District.

8 Sermon Series We can all feel it something in our culture is putting our selfishness on steroids. Technology, consumerism and broader cultural forces have come together to make us more individualistic, more impatient and more demanding by the year. Yet, the call of Jesus is just the opposite to be thinking of others, to be long-suffering, to be content. Our culture makes it more difficult for us to live lives that look like Christ. This summer we ll talk about this struggle, look to Scripture for solutions and learn Christian disciplines that will help us escape from our slavery to self. SERMON SERIES TOPICS FOR JULY 1-AUGUST 5: Self-Obsessed, Not Self-Aware (July 1) Scripture: Mark 1:35-39 Practice: Silence and Solitude 1500 Congregations of One (July 8) Scripture: Ephesians 4:1-6, Practice: Dying To Self Cultivating Real Empathy (July 15) Scripture: Ephesians 4:25-32 Practice: Active Listening Image Maintenance (July 22) Scripture: 1 John 1:5-10 Practice: Confession and Absolution The New Drug (July 29) Scripture: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20 Practice: Fasting The Echo Chamber (August 5) Scripture: Isaiah 30:9-11 Practice: Wisdom and Study Find the worship and preaching schedule at ualc.org/stylesandtimes.
