6 HEART DISEASE is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease. The good news Heart Disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. CATCH THE SIGNS EARLY: Don t wait to get help if you experience any of these heart attack warning signs: 1) Chest discomfort, 2) Discomfort in other areas of the upper body (i.e. back, neck, jaw or stomach); 3) Shortness of breath, 4) Other signs: breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. 7 BLACK HISTORY FACTS DID YOU KNOW THAT? Dr. Gladys West, a Black woman from Virginia was instrumental in creating the GPS (Global Positioning System). In 1956 Ms. West began to work at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, where she was the second black woman ever to be employed. She collected data from satellites that lead to the development of the GPS. Her supervisor recommended her as project manager for the SEASAT radar altimetry project, the first satellite that could remotely sense oceans. She later became programmer in the Dahlgren Division for large scale computers and a project manager for data-processing system used in the analysis of satellite data. She rose through the ranks, worked on the satellite geodesy (science that measures the size and shape of the Earth) that lead to the accuracy of GPS. Her contributions to GPS were uncovered when a member of her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, read a biography that Mrs. West had submitted for an alumni function. On Dec. 6, 2018, at age 87 Mrs. West was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame. DID YOU KNOW THAT? Freddie Figger was the first African American Entrepreneur to develop his own 4G LTE smart phone. He is an inventor, computer programmer, software engineer and entrepreneur. He was left at a dumpster by his birth but was adopted at 2 days old by Nathan and Betty Figger. At age 9, he received a broken computer that he was able to fix within. When his father developed dementia, he designed a smart shoe for him with GPS tracking and a two way communicator. At age 12, he got his first job as a computer technician working for the city of Quincy, Florida. At age 15, he started his own cloud computing service company. By age 24, he had 80 custom software programs built, designed and executed. He finally launched the only Black-owned telecommunication firm in the United State. He has developed a soon to be released Figger F2 4G LTE smart phone. This phone, which is competing with the new iphone and other popular smart phones, has a 5.7 inch JDI full lamination screen that is thin and offers super fast screen response speed with no night time glare. Mr. Figger was born September 26, 1989 and now has a net worth of $62.3 Million. DID YOU KNOW THAT? Gerald Anderson Jerry Lawson was a self-taught engineer who gave birth to the modern day Video games. He created the first home game system with interchangeable game cartridges that could be used at home. In 1970 s he was director of engineering and marketing for the newly formed video game division of Fairchild Semiconductor. In 1970 s, under his direction the company introduced the Fairchild Channel F, a home console that allowed users to play different games contained on removable cartridges. Until then all home video game systems could play only games that were built into the machine. In March 2011, Lawson was honored as industry pioneer for his work on the game cartridge concept by the International Game Developers Association. He died April 9, 2011 from complications from his diabetes.
