First Congregational Church January 27, East Northern Lights Blvd. Anchorage, Alaska (907)
January 27, :30 am Enter with a spirit of preparation as we gather ourselves for worship Prelude: Music for Sunday Morning Wilber Held Welcome and Announcements Choral Introit *Call to Worship *Processional Hymn: Gather Us In pg. 284 Ritual of Friendship ONE: On our journeys of life we meet here in this sacred space. ALL: We affirm that we are people of the Way, we give thanks that today our paths cross. ONE: Let us greet each other as we journey together towards fullness of life. Let us greet the one on our left and the one on our right with peace and love. *Greeting of One Another The Gathering Bell Please return and remain standing for the Responsive Reading. *Responsive Reading: ONE: The heavens are telling the glory of God; ALL: And the firmament proclaims his handiwork. ONE: Day to day pours forth speech, ALL: And night to night declares knowledge. ONE: There is no speech, nor are there words; ALL: Their voice is not heard; *Those who are comfortably able may stand. 2
ONE: Yet their voice goes out through all the earth, ALL: And their words to the end of the world. First Reading: Luke 4: Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and a report about him spread through all the surrounding country. 15 He began to teach in their synagogues and was praised by everyone. 16 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. 20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. Anthem: Arise! Shine! by Joseph M. Martin Children s Moment Prayers of the People Silent Prayer Pastoral Prayer The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation 3
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Choral Prayer Response Invitation to Giving Offertory: Aria Dennis Johnson *Doxology: (tune) No. 47 Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise God all creatures here below, Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Amen *Dedication of Gifts *Hymn: It is Well with My Soul No. 561 Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body Jews or Greeks, slaves or free and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. 14 Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot would say, Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear would say, Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body, that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many members, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. 22 On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and those members of the body that we think less honorable we clothe with greater honor, and our less respectable 4
members are treated with greater respect; 24 whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honor to the inferior member, 25 that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. Sermon: Members in Rich Variety Rev. Jacob Poindexter *Hymn: Community of Christ No. 655 *Benediction *Choral Benediction Postlude: Ferland s March William Rowan Cover Attribution: rawpixel. 6 -News for the Pews- Potluck Today at 11:45 Hosted by the FCC Council. Lectio Divina Tuesdays at 10:00 am. We read the scripture readings for the upcoming week and then the discussion takes an unexpected course. Creating Liturgia Thursdays at 10:00 am Another strange name. This gathering makes tangible items for worship, service, and community. Learn a new skill or teach your skills. New ideas are always welcome. Afterwards we gather downstairs for a soup and bread lunch. Friday Food & Fun Night! Friday, February 1 st, 5:30 pm at Fat Ptarmigan. If you have still not RSVP d, speak with Lynn Barber today. It was requested that we reserve space no later than Monday morning. We have had anywhere from 4-20 people attend in previous months. It is great fun. Sit by new and old friends around a meal and see where the conversing leads. Readers for next week Sunday, February 3 rd One of the scripture readings will be acted out by us (that means you). There are speaking and non-speaking parts. No experience or memorization required. Acting out the readings is a mix of sacred scripture witness and playful embodiment. Help us find our place within the story. If you are interested in participating, speak with Rev. Jacob after the service to find out more and see the script. Interfaith Harmony Week February 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd The Interfaith Council of Anchorage is organizing three events next weekend. Check the flyer on the next page for details. Members and friends of First Congregational are invited to attend all or any of these events. There are no dress codes or requirements to attend any of the locations. However, people attending the sweat lodge on Sunday should consider wearing or bringing clothing comfortable in a hot environment. First Congregational Church is a member faith community of the Interfaith Council of Anchorage. Rev. Jacob is the vice-president of the board, and Kata O Dell is the Secretary. This is a great opportunity to visit and connect with other member faith communities. 6
