We showed in in the Chapel and set up 50 chairs. I m very happy to report that we had 35 people there, so the place looked crowded. Thanks to all who came out to see Bernadette. On Saturday, April 28 th, SK Michael Dill, our 3-year Trustee and Director of our Culture of Life Committee, led a group to the National Day of Prayer and Protest against Planned Parenthood. It was a warm but very fulfilling morning. We joined several other groups and councils for this event. Prayer was very powerful (it always is) there on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood. There will be a 2 nd and 3 rd Degree ceremony on Sunday, May 6, at Fray Francisco Garces #3855 in Glendale. Candidates must be there by 9:00 AM to register. Lunch will be served after the ceremony. We have many 1 st Degree Knights who might like to become 2 nd Le Chevalier and 3 rd Degrees. It would be great to take a caravan of cars with multiple candidates in each one over to Glendale. Please contact me or SK Larry Bleichroth if you are interested. Santo Graziano, Director of the Food for the Poor Project, hosted an awards luncheon for all the volunteers who pick up and deliver the bread. The lunch was very good, the company was outstanding, and Santo had a great speaker: Dr. Ken Snyder. Dr. Snyder presented a very moving story about his experiences as a dentist in the St. Vincent de Paul charity dental clinic. He s been there for 22 years and has done incredible good for the many children, veterans, and other adults who receive their dental care from the clinic. It s good to be a Knight in so many ways! Ask an active Knight why. Vivat Jesus! Fraternally, Jerry Wood Grand Knight If anyone says, I love God, but hates his brother, he is a liar 1 John 4:20

3 Volume 3 Issue 10 Le Chevalier May 2018 p.3 Saint of the Month Saint Teresa of Los Andes contracted typhus and quickly took her final vows. She died a short time later, during Holy Week. Known as (July 13, 1900 April 12, 1920) Saint Teresa of Los Andes Story One needn t live a long life to leave a deep imprint. Teresa of Los Andes is proof of that. As a young girl growing up in the early 1900 s in Santiago, Chile, Juana Fernandez read an autobiography of a French-born saint Thérèse, popularly known as the Little Flower. The experience deepened her desire to serve God and clarified the path she would follow. At age 19 Juana became a Carmelite nun, taking the name of Teresa. The convent offered the simple lifestyle Teresa desired and the joy of living in a community of women completely devoted to God. She focused her days on prayer and sacrifice. I am God s, she wrote in her diary. He created me and is my beginning and my end. the Flower of the Andes, Teresa remains popular with the estimated 100,000 pilgrims who visit her shrine in Los Andes each year. Canonized in 1993 by Pope John Paul II, she is Chile s first saint. Reflection St. Teresa of Los Andes, oro pro nobis. The special graces given Saint Teresa reflect the mysterious wisdom of God at work in individuals whether young or old. It appears God has his own logic when it comes to who gets what in the realm of grace. All we can say is; Praised be the Lord... Toward the end of her short life, Teresa began an apostolate of letter-writing, sharing her thoughts on the spiritual life with many people. At age 20 she

5 Volume 3 Issue 10 Le Chevalier May 2018 p.5 Mr. Wes Casaus, Sr. Field Agent, FIC (623) Cell wes.casaus@kofc.org Member since 2005, PGK, PFN, FDD Career Opportunity Member of KofC since 2005 Protecting Catholic families since 1882 Life Insurance Long-Term Care Retirement Annuities Disability Consider a typical male, age 35, non-smoker, who works at an office job with some outdoor responsibilities and leads a very healthy lifestyle. He has a 28 percent chance of being injured or becoming ill and unable to work for three months or longer prior to retirement.** If this happens to you, not someone else, will you have a bridge to carry you and your family? If your illness or injury is among the 95 percent that happen outside of work, workers compensation will be of no assistance to you. 7 in 10 employed Americans say they would feel the financial pinch in a month or less without their paycheck.*** What if your last paycheck really is your last paycheck? There is a solution, however. Your membership in the Knights of Columbus gives you and your eligible family members exclusive access to disability income insurance that can help safeguard your paycheck. With Knights of Columbus Disability Income Insurance, you can ensure you and your family are provided for in the event of unexpected loss of work. MAY IS DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH! Is Your Paycheck Protected? Most people see work as something that will always be there. We live our lives expecting to wake up, go to work, and complete our tasks throughout the day to provide for our families. Work, and the financial stability that it provides, is often taken for granted. What if one day you wake up and you are no longer able to go to work, through no fault of your own? Accidents and illness can affect anyone, at any stage in their career. How will you react to unforeseeable adversity? Do you have a plan in place if you are no longer able to perform your duty? The Knights of Columbus can help you put this plan in place and prepare for unexpected life events. Retirement is often planned, but disability is not. Chance favors no man. Too often people say that will never happen to me or I will cross that bridge if it comes. There is no bridge that carries you over the void from gainful employment to disability unless you start planning today. Disability insurance is often dismissed by working men and women because they think their jobs are fairly safe. Their lives are fairly healthy. Disability they say is simply something they will never experience. The statistics tell a different story. According to the United States government, a staggering 1 in 4 of today s 20-year-olds will become disabled before reaching the age of 67. The nature of the job is irrelevant. According to the Social Security Administration, 95 percent of all disabling illnesses and accidents happen outside of the workplace.* Our disability income insurance is designed to be flexible so that, working with your brother Knight field agent, you can customize it to fit your needs. You choose the monthly benefit amount that s right for you, the elimination period that makes the most sense, and the maximum benefit period for your policy. By purchasing a disability income insurance policy from the Knights of Columbus, you have the added security of knowing that you are doing business with a Catholic company that makes sure its investments do not violate Church teaching and which has been repeatedly recognized as a World s Most Ethical company. **** You owe it to yourself and to your family to make sure that your financial future is secure, regardless of what happens. Don t be caught off guard by surprises. Be on guard and be prepared. * Social Security Fact Sheet, United States Social Security Administration, accessed April 5, 2018, ** What s Your PDQ? Photo: J. Wood On April 28, 2018, Knights Brian Weber together with his wife, Vicki,, Ed Dunai, and SK Jerry Wood joined SK Michael and Midi Dill, Mrs. Klodt, and Bill Simmons for the National Day of Prayer and Protest Against Planned Parenthood in Tempe. While our Brother Knights were playing golf, this small group joined a much larger group from other churches and other Knights councils in their promotion of the truth about this controversial organization: PP is the nation s largest abortion chain; PP is a bad actor and a lightning rod of controversy; PP exaggerates its role in providing health care to women; defunding PP would not reduce funding for women s health. Figure3: Bill Simmons, Jerry Wood, Michael Dill, Ed Dunai, Roberta Klodt, Brian & Vicki Weber. Photo: Midi Dill SK Michael Dill and Lady Midi serve in the Culture of Life Ministry as well as being the Directors of our Council s Culture of Life Committee. Our church and our council take the abortion issue very seriously, and it is the intention of the Council to become more active in the pro-life movement. Regularly scheduled protests at Planned Parenthood might be a way that we can begin to address this issue. I hope that more Knights will join us at the next Planned Parenthood protest. May God bless us all and our efforts in this cause.
