Christ the King Lutheran Church 111 West Magnolia Road Salina, Kansas (785) Pastor Dennis Kootz, Vacancy Pastor (785) Commit It and Forget It SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY January 20, 2019
MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose of Christ the King is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people and to make them disciples of Jesus. Welcome: We are pleased that you are here to join us in worship today. We pray that our time together in God s word assures you that you are loved by God and your sins are forgiven because of Jesus Christ s life, death, and resurrection. If you are visiting with us today and we can be of any assistance to you, please let us know. Record of Attendance: We ask that all who are worshipping with us today would honor us by giving us a record of your attendance. Please fill out the blue card and then hand it to the center aisle. Prayer Request: If you have any prayer requests, please place them on an attendance card. If you would like your request included in the prayers today, please inform one of the ushers and they will inform Pastor. Children are always welcome in the worship service. At Christ the King we believe that it is important for the whole family to worship together whenever possible. In order to assist you and for your comfort, we have a room just off the sanctuary that has a one-way glass, and we also have a nursery. If one of these areas would be helpful to you the usher will be happy to assist you. Altar flowers are given to the Glory of God anonymously this week. Order of Worship: Creative Worship As We Gather: We all have many cares and worries in life. Chances are you arrived to worship this morning carrying some of those concerns upon your heart and mind. If that s true, know that today s
service is designed for you! As we witness Jesus first miracle at the Cana wedding feast, we also learn from the experience of His mother, Mary. Mary was worried about the host family they ran out of wine! She wanted to help, but she knew only one thing to do. She committed the situation to Jesus, knowing He would take care of it. And that He did! Much more than helping provide refreshment for wedding guests, Jesus revealed His power and glory. And His disciples believed in Him (John 2:11). Today, may you do the same. Commit your concerns to the One who gave Himself for you and invites you to believe in Him. LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES WELCOME & GREETING CHIMES PREPARATION OPENING HYMN Songs of Thankfulness and Praise LSB Songs of thankfulness and praise, Jesus, Lord, to Thee we raise, Manifested by the star To the sages from afar, Branch of royal David s stem In Thy birth at Bethlehem: Anthems be to Thee addressed, God in man made manifest. 2 Manifest at Jordan s stream, Prophet, Priest, and King supreme; And at Cana wedding guest In Thy Godhead manifest;

Purify our hearts, merciful Father, through the presence of Jesus Christ, that we be blessed with the forgiveness He freely offers to us all. Amen. P: Jesus stands in your midst today and speaks into your ears the words of life that bring healing to your souls. 6 WORD INTROIT (Psalm 36:5 9; antiphon: Song of Songs 2:4) P: The Lord brought me to the banqueting house, C: and His banner over me was love. P: Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, C: Your faithfulness to the clouds. P: Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; C: Your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast You save, O LORD. P: How precious is Your steadfast love, O God! C: The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of Your wings. P: They feast on the abundance of Your house, C: and You give them drink from the river of Your delights. P: For with You is the fountain of life; C: in Your light do we see light. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: The Lord brought me to the banqueting house, C: and His banner over me was love.
HYMN OF PRAISE O Bless the Lord, My Soul LSB O bless the Lord, my soul! Let all within me join And aid my tongue to bless His name Whose favors are divine. 2 O bless the Lord, my soul, Nor let His mercies lie Forgotten in unthankfulness And without praises die! 3 Tis He forgives thy sins; Tis He relieves thy pain; Tis He that heals thy sicknesses And makes thee young again. 4 He crowns thy life with love When ransomed from the grave; He that redeemed my soul from hell Hath sov reign pow r to save. 5 He fills the poor with good; He gives the suff rers rest. The Lord hath judgments for the proud And justice for the_oppressed. 6 His wondrous works and ways He made by Moses known, But sent the world His truth and grace By His belovèd Son. Public domain
SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, who governs all things in heaven and on earth, mercifully grant that as we commit our cares to You, we may trust in the blessing of Your presence and peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 62:1 5 (God is the Bridegroom to His people.) 1 For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate, but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your sons marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.
PSALM (Psalm 128; antiphon: v. 2b) L: Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways! C: You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; L: You shall be blessed, C: and it shall be well with you. L: Your wife will be a like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. C: Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD. L: You shall be blessed, C: and it shall be well with you. L: The LORD bless you from Zion! May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life! C: May you see your children s children! Peace be upon Israel! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. L: You shall be blessed, C: and it shall be well with you. EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 12:1 11 (God gives the gifts of His Spirit for the common good.) 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says Jesus is accursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there
are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. VERSE (John 2:11) P: Alleluia. This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested His glory. C: And His disciples believed in Him. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL John 2:1 11 (Jesus works His first sign at the Cana wedding feast.) P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the second chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 1 On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. 3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. 4 And Jesus said to her, Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come. 5 His mother said to
the servants, Do whatever he tells you. 6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And he said to them, Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast. So they took it. 9 When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now. 11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. CHILDREN S MESSAGE HYMN OF THE DAY Come, Join in Cana s Feast LSB Come, join in Cana s feast Where Christ is honored guest. He welcomes all who come to taste The wine His hands have blessed. 2 The old wine now is gone From jars that stand apart. No longer can it satisfy The yearning, thirsting heart.
3 But Christ, the Word made flesh, Bids water turn to wine. He fills our empty cups again With grace and truth divine. 4 Come, friends, and share the feast; Here drink the wine supplied By Him who is both guest and host For us, the crucified. 5 For now He lives and reigns Through all eternity With Father, Spirit, Three in One, The glorious Trinity The Hymn Society; admin. Hope Publishing Co. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License.NET, no SERMON (Rev. Robert Schaedel) John 2:1-11 APOSTLES' CREED C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
WE PRAISE GOD WITH OUR OFFERING PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Father in heaven, we thank and praise You for Your great goodness in sending Jesus Christ, Your Son, who revealed His glory by His presence and first miracle at Cana in Galilee. Grant that we too receive and rejoice in His mercy. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. P: We pray this day for the ministry of the Gospel, both here at Christ the King and throughout the world. Wherever the name of Jesus is proclaimed, grant that hearts be changed by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Lord, continue daily to add to our number those who are being saved. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. P: In Your earthly ministry, O Lord, You were often surrounded by family and friends. We, too, are blessed with loved ones who give us opportunities to show our love for You by loving them also. Bless all Christian families that in our worship to You and our service to one another we rejoice in Your goodness all our days. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. P: Your work of healing, Lord Jesus, caused Your fame to spread as people beheld Your glory. Your healing ministry continues on earth even now through the gifts of medicine, health professionals, and all who care for those in need. We lift before you all those in our faith family who need Your healing touch today, [especially...]. Great Physician, we ask that You take great care of each of these for whom we pray. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence.
P: Lord God, Your presence is known among us by the ongoing work of Your Holy Spirit. Enable all who are baptized to proudly bear Your name each day, that we use our various vocations to give You glory. Be especially with those whose work is difficult and dangerous, including all public servants and members of the military, (especially ) that we dwell in safety and peace. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. P: These and all other prayers, which are upon our minds and hearts, we commit to You, dear Father, in the saving name of Your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. C: Jesus, we are blessed by Your presence. Amen! LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. RITE OF INSTALLATION (8:00 a.m.) (CTK 2019 Board of Directors, Board of Elders, Board of Properties, and Personnel Committee) BENEDICTION (Psalm 128:1 2; Numbers 6:24 26) P: Your God says to you, Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways! You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; C: you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you.
P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. CLOSING HYMN The Star Proclaims the King is Here LSB The star proclaims the King is here; But, Herod, why this senseless fear? For He who offers heav nly birth Seeks not the kingdoms of this earth. 2 The eastern sages saw from far And followed on His guiding star; And, led by light, to light they trod And by their gifts confessed their God. 3 Within the Jordan s sacred flood The heav nly Lamb in meekness stood That He, of whom no sin was known, Might cleanse His people from their own. 4 And oh, what miracle divine, When water reddened into wine! He spoke the word, and forth it flowed In streams that nature ne er bestowed. 5 For this Thy glad epiphany All glory, Jesus, be to Thee, Whom with the Father we adore, And Holy Spirit evermore.
