2 PRE-SERVICE MUSIC ORDER of WORSHIP OPENING WELCOME and INVOCATION Kay Kaepp INVOCATION (Please stand) P In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. CONFESSION and ABSOLUTION P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy...name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. SERVICE of the WORD PSALMODY Psalm 41 P Blessèd is the one who considers the poor! In the day of trouble the LORD delivers him; the LORD protects him and keeps him alive; he is called blesséd in the land; you do not give him up to the will of his enemies. The LORD sustains him on his sickbed; in his illness you restore him to full health. Women As for me, I said, O LORD, be gracious to me; heal me, for I have sinned against you! My enemies say of me in malice, When will he die and his name perish? And when one comes to see me, he utters empty words, while his heart gathers iniquity; when he goes out, he tells it abroad. MEN ALL WHO HATE ME WHISPER TOGETHER ABOUT ME; THEY IMAGINE THE WORST FOR ME. THEY SAY, A DEADLY THING IS POURED OUT ON HIM; HE WILL NOT RISE AGAIN FROM WHERE HE LIES. EVEN MY CLOSE FRIEND IN WHOM I TRUSTED, WHO ATE MY BREAD, HAS LIFTED HIS HEEL AGAINST ME. P But you, O LORD, be gracious to me, and raise me up, that I may repay them! By this I know that you delight in me: my enemy will not shout in triumph over me. 1
3 C But you have upheld me because of my integrity, and set me in your presence forever. Blessèd be the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Amen and Amen. KYRIE Mark 10:47 2
4 THIS IS THE FEAST Revelation 5:12-13; 19:5-9 SALUTATION and COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray. P O God, in the glorious transfiguration of Your beloved Son You confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the testimony of Moses and Elijah. In the voice that came from the bright cloud 3
5 C You wonderfully foreshowed our adoption by grace. Mercifully make us co-heirs with the King in His glory and bring us to the fullness of our inheritance in heaven; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. FIRST READING (please be seated) 2 Kings 2: Now when the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2 And Elijah said to Elisha, Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel. But Elisha said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they went down to Bethel. 3 And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you? And he said, Yes, I know it; keep quiet. 4 Elijah said to him, Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho. But he said, As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you. So they came to Jericho. 5 The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you? And he answered, Yes, I know it; keep quiet. 6 Then Elijah said to him, Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan. But he said, men of the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8 Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground. 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you. And Elisha said, Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me. 10 And he said, You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so. 11 And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12 And Elisha saw it and he cried, My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen! And he saw him no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will A This is the Word of the Lord. not leave you. So the two of them went on. 7 Fifty C Thanks be to God EPISTLE 2 Corinthians 3:12 13; 4: Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are 13 not like Moses, who would put a veil over his perishing. 4 In their case the god of this world has face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep outcome of what was being brought to an end. them from seeing the light of the gospel of the 1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For what God, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. C Glory to You, O Lord. 2 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3 and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. 4 And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 And Peter said to Jesus, Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. 6 For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, This is my beloved Son; listen to him. 8 And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. 9 And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.
