1 February 2017 Newsletter THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH CHAPEL HILL, NC In Praise of Small Kindnesses In this post-election season, when voices all around us are calling for everyone to stand up for our principles and our vision of what we understand it to mean to be an American urgently! -- I ve found that it can be exhausting just to try to tune in to the way things are by listening to the news! These days, I seem to need more time to think about the calls to action, even the ones that urge me in ways that I agree with, such as the slogan make America kind again. How to do that, I wonder? I take it in, though, the admonition to be kind, and it does feel like a core value to me, as a citizen, and as a person trying to hold body and spirit together. A saying attributed to the Buddha teaches us: Words have the power both to harm and to heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world. These sayings have gotten me thinking about a poem that I first got to know about a year ago. It seems quite in keeping with that other season we are living in, Epiphany, when we tune our attention to the showings-forth of the divine light hidden everywhere in the way things are. Here is Siri Liv Myrhom s poem, In Praise of Small Kindnesses : Meredith Bratcher Today s is a soft meditation in praise of the enormity of small kindnesses. Like the café worker who waved enthusiastically to my father as he walked in the door of the coffee shop like she was expecting him, like he was a regular in this hipster enclave instead of a septuagenarian in khaki shorts and white tennis shoes. He met me here on my workday so I could help him format a document something he couldn t figure out how to do at home no matter how many buttons he tried, something my mother always did for him in the decades after he gave up his trusty typewriter. So he arrived at the coffee shop vulnerable and exasperated in that way that only technology can make us feel: like slow, dependent children and sorely missing my mother. Like the barista who didn t blink when he ordered his coffee the wrong way, when he said la-tay instead of LAH-tey, who took his order from our table as if we were in a sit-down restaurant and she was our waiter, who smiled the whole time like a halo of warm light, softening the space everywhere, who made him feel like he belonged. You cannot know how those small gestures matter, unless you are him, unless you are me, watching, unless you see his shoulders relax, in that way that we can do only when we feel safe and seen enough to let go, and his eyes dampen, the tiny liquid pools held in at the rims, barely noticeable, as he smiles and says, She always knew how to do this for me. For years she did this. She would have been 69 today. How I miss her. Siri Liv Myhrom lives in Minneapolis with her husband and two young daughters. When she s not working as a freelance writer and editor, she s reading, writing, researching, and generally obsessing about human connection how it works, why it doesn t work sometimes, and how we can get more of it in real, transformational ways.

2 PAGE 2 MEET AMANDA TYLER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE BAPTIST JOINT COMMITTEE FOR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY Beginning January 1, Amanda Tyler stepped into the top job at one of the nation s oldest and most respected organizations working on issues of separation of church and state. The Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty (BJC) was founded 8 decades ago by the National Baptist Convention USA, the Northern Baptist Convention (now American Baptist Churches) and the Southern Baptist Convention who wanted to combine their voices on issues of religious freedom as guaranteed in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which, in its very first words, prohibits Congress from making any law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. They established a presence in Washington, working to ensure this constitutionally guaranteed right was fully understood by policy shapers and lawmakers. Although the Southern Amanda Tyler Baptist Convention removed its support and affiliation in the 1990s, today the BJC is supported by a strong coalition of 15 Baptist groups including American Baptist Churches USA and the Alliance of Baptists, both of which Binkley is affiliated with. Amanda s journey to the BJC began early, before she had even heard of the organization. Raised in Texas, she was active in Austin s Highland Park Baptist Church. In high school she chose freedom of religion as a topic for a scholarship application speech, demonstrating her interest in the issue at an early age. Amanda left the Lone Star State for college at Georgetown University in Washington, DC and discovered the BJC. She was so motivated by its mission and work that she got a job there while in college. And even though she returned to Texas for her law degree, the organization s important work was never far from her mind. Following law school at the University of Texas, she joined U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett s staff first in Austin and then in Washington. (Marcus McFaul has called Congressman Doggett the David Price of Texas.) Working in several capacities, she eventually became Doggett s counsel for the Ways and Means Committee. This sounds like a big job, but Amanda also made time to volunteer for the BJC and joined the Board of Directors. Last year, an opportunity opened up. As she says When long-time Executive Director Brent Walker announced his retirement, I felt God was calling me to this work. As you can see, the BJC has been a constant thread throughout my life. I ve always had an interest in religion and also in constitutional law. This is where these two intersect. She applied for the job and was named to the top job last fall, taking on her duties at the beginning of this year. She inherits an experienced and productive organization, crediting the longevity of her predecessors at the helm as one reason for its excellent reputation in Washington and stable finances. In addition, the staff had just completed a new visioning process in 2016, identifying new directions for the BJC for the future. As Amanda explains, the BJC wants to expand its presence in the public square. By this she means (including on social media and engaging and mobilizing supporters to work in their own communities. Her immediate concerns are the rising unease about religious pluralism in our country, so vocally expressed during the 2016 political campaigns. She is also alert to rising hate rhetoric directed against religious minorities, particularly Muslims and Jews and policies banning Muslim immigrants and discussion of the creation of a Muslim registry. As she says, The BJC has a unique role in this discussion. After all, as Baptists, we were once a religious minority in this country. We have a responsibility to speak out. Amanda is also concerned about attempts to prop up religious organizations with federal funding and policies, including vouchers for religious schools. The BJC will sound the alarm when the line is crossed, she says. Another example is an attempt to repeal the Johnson amendment. This law prohibits nonprofit organizations (including religious ones) from endorsing political candidates without sacrificing their tax-free status. The BJC will be working to explain why that policy is a wise one both for church and state. Long term, Amanda would like to see the BJC broaden its appeal to more people. Most of our support is from Baptists, but our work should appeal to everyone who values religious liberty. Proud of the Baptist roots of this first constitutional freedom, the BJC wants to engage everyone in protecting it as new challenges continue to arise. If you want to learn more about the BJC, check their website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Amanda also invites Binkleyites to visit the BJC s Center for Religious on Capitol Hill whenever any of us are in Washington. You can also support the BJC through individual contributions. Most importantly, Amanda wants us to let them know when we see threats to religious liberty in our community so they can help us combat them. The BJC has stood firm to protect our religious freedom for 80 years. It is clear that this important work needs to continue. Priscilla Bratcher

3 PAGE 3 FROM THE MODERATOR The Binkley transition process continues! The newly appointed Human Resources Committee (Anne Huffman, Chair) is busy reviewing personnel policies, preparing a job description for the Lead Pastor, reviewing current job descriptions, and developing consistent procedures for performance evaluation and review. The Minister Search Committee is working diligently to discern God s direction for continued leadership for Binkley. Keep them in your prayers. Upon recommendation from the Finance Committee, the Council approved an operating budget for Binkley for 2017 and recommends its adoption by the congregation. A congregational conversation about the budget will occur in Fellowship Hall immediately following the worship service on Sunday, February 5. Child care and light refreshments will be provided. A Church in Conference Nape Baker is scheduled for Sunday, February 12 following the worship service to vote on the proposed budget. Appreciation to Wayne Price, Budget Director, and the Finance Committee for their hard and careful work as we prepared for the future. The Leadership Team along with Caryl Fulcher and Christine Jernigan (appointed by Susan Read, Chair of Diaconate) are assembling a list of potential nominees to be given to the Deacons for new church officers. The Deacons will make nominations to the Church in Conference on Sunday, March 12 to vote on new church officers. Deacon elections will occur in April. Remember your current and future church leaders in your prayers. We are a busy and faithful congregation working to live into our mission building a compassionate and joyful community, freely exploring spiritual paths, and pursuing justice and peace in the name of Jesus. Nape Baker, Moderator CONGREGATIONAL CONVERSATION ON BUDGET AND CHURCH IN CONFERENCE There will be a Congregational Conversation on Sunday, February 5 immediately following the worship service. Light refreshments and child care will be provided. We will meet in Fellowship Hall. The Finance Committee and Council will present the recommended Program of Ministry budget for The Church Council has scheduled a Church in Conference on Sunday, February 12 to vote on the proposed budget. Please plan to attend both meetings. FROM THE MINISTER SEARCH COMMITTEE The Minister Search Committee is diligently working through the 85 applicants that have submitted their information. We have responded to those individuals that we collectively felt did not fit the candidate profile that was produce by the Transition Team and you, the congregation. This is a heavy task and we ask you to continue praying for both the committee and candidates as we all discern who should be called as our next settled pastor. Larry McManus, Chair, MSC PEACE POLE DEDICATION It was a cold rainy day in early December--Peace Sunday in the season of Advent-- when an intergenerational, multicultural group gathered around the new Peace Pole to offer prayers for peace. Marcus McFaul began by giving thanks to those who designed and built the peace pole area. In different languages but with the same hope for peace, the phrase "May peace prevail on Earth" was declared in Chinese, Russian, Hebrew, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German and English. The group turned to face east, south, west and north as Rev. McFaul offered our prayers for peace in all directions of the planet. As the dedication was ending one voice spontaneously began to sing and others quickly joined in : "Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with me."

7 PAGE 7 SHROVE TUESDAY AND LENT Then and Now, A Season for Prayer and Purpose Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving, when the faithful confessed their sins to the local priest and received forgiveness before the Lenten season began. As far back as 1000 AD, "to shrive" meant to hear confessions. Historically, Shrove Tuesday also marked the beginning of the 40-day Lenten fasting period when the faithful were forbidden by the church to consume meat, butter, eggs or milk. However, if a family had a store of these foods they all would go bad by the time the fast ended on Easter Sunday. What to do? Solution: use up the milk, butter and eggs no later than Shrove Tuesday. And so, with the addition of a little flour, the solution quickly presented itself in... pancakes, lots of 'em. In France, (as well as here in the US or, more famously, in New Orleans) it's known as Fat Tuesday which culminates the Mardi Gras festival with boisterous celebrations just before the Lenten season. During Lent at Binkley, members and friends are encouraged to center themselves in God s presence through prayer, disciplines of your choosing (fasting from certain foods, activities, etc.) and commitments to service or support for God s creation. Some people pledge to write a note of support to a different person every week while others gather food to support those who live with hunger every day. The Lenten promises you make are entirely up to you. All of these promises are helpful in connecting us to Jesus the Christ who is our servant leader and teacher. SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER! At Binkley, our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 28 is led by the youth of the church and includes a terrific Talent Show. All ages are encouraged to sign up on in the narthex for the talent portion of our night together. The cost for the meal (pancakes, waffles, sausage, fresh fruit and beverages) is $8.00 for 6th grade and above and $7.00 for 5th grade and below. Any net proceeds from the meal will support our Baptist Youth Camp scholarships. The meal begins at 6:00 pm and is served until approximately 6:45 pm when the Talent Show begins. Please join us for this night of fellowship through food, fun and frivolity! BINKLEY WOMEN'S RETREAT, MAY 5-7, TRINITY CENTER, SALTER PATH, NC This is your year to go! Put the date on your calendar! Do you know her? You may not know her name, but if you linger after Sunday 11:00 worship, you will have seen her. Every Sunday, Carol tidies the Carol Rhodes sanctuary, picking up paper, putting hymnals back into their holders, taking left umbrellas to the lost and found, ensuring the sanctuary is presentable for its next use. Most importantly, Carol sings or hums while she s tidying, conveying a spirit of joy as she works. One of our staff members nominated Carol for a special Valentine this month and we re pretty sure that gesture would be unanimously endorsed by all of Binkley. Thank you, Carol, for your loving work and joyful spirit. Dear Binkley Family, There is no way that we can ever thank you enough for the love and support that you gave to Lynda and myself in her long difficult journey. You cannot realize the number of visits, phone, calls, cards and food that we received from our Binkley Family. There was hardly a day that went by that we did not receive one or two cards that I would take to the facility to share with Lynda. She loved them. It cheered her up as we would read them together and discuss who they were from and how we had interacted with the writers on different occasions at church functions. She and I enjoyed many functions and services together with you. Even though it was hard work, she loved the excitement and companionship that made for a successful yard sale. She knew Bob and Pearl at Mars Hill College and when we married and settled in Chapel Hill in 1958, we joined Binkley in the 2nd or 3rd level of membership. So you (Binkley) have been a big part of our lives for many years. Thank you for your much needed love and support through deeds and actions that we the Jensen family will cherish for the rest of our lives.
