Alexander Schreiner We invite you to use this time for quiet prayer and preparation for worship Entering into Worship PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. ANTHEM Saints Bound for Heaven Robert Shaw/Alice Parker Proclaiming God s Word READING FROM SCRIPTURE Psalm 46 In the pew Bibles, on pages of the First Testament LEADER: When we live in ways that fracture our community, PEOPLE: Give your light, O God of love. LEADER: When we are separated by social boundaries of our own construction, SERMON Promises, Promises Sermon Series #5 - How to Vote Rev. Kory Wilcoxson PEOPLE: Give your light, O God who frees. LEADER: When our words divide us rather than unite us, PEOPLE: Give your light, O God of grace. Leader: When hatred, conflict, and fear challenge Your goodness, People: Give your light, O God of peace. *HYMN 21 Let the Whole Creation Cry LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE Grant Wilkinson READING FROM SCRIPTURE Ephesians 4:1-5 In the pew Bibles, on page 193 of the Second Testament CHILDREN S CHOIR Gladly Give HYMN In Times of Great Decision Copyright 2004 Carol Winfrey Gillette In times of great decision, be with us God, we pray. O God, whose gifts are countless, you send us bearing peace. You fill our dreams with justice for all communities. You give us global neighbors that all may justly live. May those we choose as leaders reflect the life you give. You call on every nation to put aside all greed, To care for your creation and for your ones in need, To care for those in prison, for children, for the ill. In times of great decision, may we choose leaders well. CHILDREN S TIME Children welcome in the name of Jesus, Children welcome in the name of love. ADVENT SMALL GROUP STUDY - THE REDEMPTION OF SCROOGE We re all familiar with the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, as told by Charles Dickens in A Christmas Carol. The miserly Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his friend, Jacob (not Bob!) Marley, and then by three other ghosts who help him learn the true meaning of Christmas. For the Advent sermon series, we ll be talking about The Ghosts of Christmas. The series will be accompanied by small-group gatherings that will be discussing The Redemption of Scrooge by Matt Rawle. These groups will be hosted in members homes and will take place at various times. If you d like to participate in an Advent small group, please call the office or Kory with your name and preferred time to meet (e.g., Sunday afternoon, weekday morning, etc.). We ll get you placed in a group that works for you. READING THE BIBLE WITH YOUR KIDS Conventional wisdom says that biblical illiteracy is on the rise in our country. Gone are the days when parents and kids read the Bible together. But it doesn t have to be that way! In this class, we ll explore together what s in the Bible and how we can read it together for the most enjoyment and learning. This is a class for parents AND kids to experience together! So bring a child (preferably yours), a Bible, and a willingness to learn more about what s in this Good Book. We ll meet on Sundays (Nov. 6, Nov. 13, and Nov. 20) from 3-4 p.m. in the Faith Room. Please RSVP to Kory so we can know how many to expect. Hope you can join us! ELECTION DAY PRAYER SERVICE This Tuesday, our country faces a momentous decision as we elect the people who will be leading us into the future. It s important to lift up this decision and our country to God in prayer. Join us at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in the sanctuary for a brief prayer service as we prepare to watch the election results. Prayer is the most powerful tool at our disposal. Let s put it to use on Tuesday! MORE THAN DECORATIONS AND FOOD: HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS FOR WHEN THE HOLIDAYS ARE HARD SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 3 P.M. For many of us, the upcoming seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas are difficult. Grief, loss, broken relationships, loneliness, family stress, illness, and other circumstances are magnified during these seasons that seem to demand that we be happy. This year, the Stephen Ministers are hosting an event to provide tools to assist us as we navigate the holidays. Mark your calendar for November 13, and invite friends and family to attend this workshop.
